Aunque sea algo tarde.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, but thanks again for your patience. Today marks the opening day in North America of the 2008-2009 NHL season and while I realize I probably just made 75% of you reading this groan out loud, stick with me because I'm not really going to talk about hockey at all. I'm a big fan of the sport, but more importantly to you I'm also a giant fan of the 1977 George Roy Hill film Slap Shot. Not only did this classic star the late great Paul Newman in one of his funniest roles, but it's widely considered the best hockey movie of all time, one of the best sports films of all time, and certainly the dirtiest (written by a woman, no less). Here's but a taste:

Great, huh? Seriously if you haven't seen this go rent it or look for it on TV (and just ignore the fact that they made a sequel in 2002 with Stephen Baldwin - it was bound to happen some time). I'm also a big fan of the music in this film, and in particular this dance hit by Maxine Nightingale called "Right Back Where We Started From":

It's not all dance and disco though. Skip to the 2:10 mark in this one for a country treat:

That said, there's no denying Slap Shot was made in the 1970's and it's songs like this one by Leo Sayer that really add to its charm and time capsule-esque-ness:

All right, hosers. Enjoy the music, watch the movie, and get in the game. I'll be back soon.

As I write this, it would have been more than a couple of weeks since a true Hollywood star has once again ascended the Great Celestial Staircase.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="123" caption="Paul Newman, 1925-2008"][/caption]

One can say that by his passing, Paul Newman has managed to draw a tear to many an eye of those who have worked with him as well as those who have been influenced not only by his low-key manner of life but the way he has lived it. His long-lasting marriage to Joanne Woodward (whom he also directed in some of her movies) has defied industry convention; at least he needn't have to worry about any of his offspring raising hell and besmirching his legacy. Nevertheless, he managed to live a full life, diversifying his interests into such fields as health-food manufacturing and auto racing - he was still burning laps down the speedway several months before his sudden passing from a heart attack. Even when his screen appearances have become more infrequent, he has managed to make each and every one of them count.

Take for instance,

That was his voice propelling "Doc" the Hudson Hornet in Disney/Pixar's Cars (for the record, I actually cried upon seeing that on the big screen)

Nothing can compare, though, to Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, his team-up with Robert Redford which practically rewrote the rules of the Western, in more ways than one...

The Burt Bacharach score is to die for....

Gotta admit...I've not been a follower of Newman's work (though I did catch both The Color of Money and Road to Perdition - and fell asleep while watching the latter!) He's going to be definitely a tough act to follow...however, the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal and Ben Affleck stand to inherit his mantle. Only time will tell if they do play their cards right and follow his career trajectory.

Going back to the business at hand, I was off by a couple of days in predicting the playdate for Mirrors, but I really feel like an ass in thinking that Beverly Hills Chihuahua would be released around the last week of September. Just the same, local releases will remain in orange while must-sees are in italics.

Oct 1
Mag-Ingat Ka sa Kulam
Mirrors
Three Kingdoms: Return of the Dragon
Mutant Chronicles

Let's keep these short....

Mirrors - check the September installment of this column.

Three Kingdoms - so-so Chinese historical drama; they could've released John Woo's Red Cliff instead (but it was considerate for the local distribs to release it in the original Chinese w/ English subtitles)

Mutant Chronicles - great casting of genre faves Thomas (Punisher) Jane, Ron (HellBoy) Perlman and Devon (Miho) Aoki in in yet another game-to-cinema adaptation which sadly turns into yet one more wasted opportunity.

Oct 8
Igor
Buried Alive
Body of Lies
Tropic Thunder
Appaloosa

More wasted opportunities...in spite of a stellar cast led by John Cusack as the titular apprentice-turned-monster-makin' wannabe, many are calling down Igor as being too derivative of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride & The Nightmare Before Christmas.

You be the judge:

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride trailer

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas trailer

Igor trailer

Brave - yet ballsy - job for upstart company Exodus Film Group, though.

Looks like a close toss-up between Tropic Thunder and Body of Lies....

...once you go "black", there's no way that you can go back!!!

Might be catching one or both of them over the weekend...just keep posted for the inevitable review!!!

Oct 15
Max Payne
The Strangers
The Pineapple Express

Director John Moore and "Max Payne" himself Mark Wahlberg talk about the upcoming PC/video game adaptation

Official theatrical trailer for Max Payne

I just hope that the R-rated grittiness of the source material (yet another adaptation from a PC/console game?? See Mutant Chronicles above) would be retained...it'd be a pity if it may wind up as yet another stinker. Nevertheless, the presence of Mark Wahlberg should make this worthwhile - not to mention a solid supporting performance from Chris "Ludacris" Bridges (heeeyyy Luda, lay off the Marky Mark jokes, huh)

Then again, wasn't bullet-time a cinematic fancy whose novelty has long since passed?

I liked Shoot 'Em Up last year, so if Max Payne would be going down that stylistic direction, maybe I'd give it a whack.

As with Tropic Thunder above, I've already mentioned about The Pineapple Express and why people should go see this...

Oct 22
Nights in Rodanthe

Not really my type, though...never read any of Nicholas Sparks' books and never have any plans to do. Likewise, it'd be equally pointless for me to catch any movies based on his books, like The Horse Whisperer, The Notebook and Nights in Rodanthe,

Oct 24
High School Musical 3: Senior Year

Assley Titsd...oops, I mean Ashley Tisdale with "A Night To Remember" from the High School Musical 3 soundtrack

AAAAARRRGGGHHH...sugar intake approaching diabetic level!!!

Believe me, HSM 1 was okay...but I just couldn't get myself to complete HSM2 even when it gets rerun on the Disney Channel. Now they're going to take it all the way to widescreen!!!

Oct 29
The House Bunny

I beg please don't ever, EVER move the release date again....

The countdown is ongoing...

Official movie trailer for Quantum of Solace, the 22nd James Bond film - and the second for Daniel Craig as 007. Directed by Marc Forster (Monster's Ball, The Kite Runner), the word out is that they will be reintroducing naked (?) dancing girls for the opening credits, but no gadgets or catchphrases yet for Bond - not at this moment yet.

HOOK: Someone is going to make some sense out of our wasting our lives watching movies.

STORY: Marty tells us the films that formed him (at least he thinks they did in retrospect).

GOSSIP: Martin Scorsese is actually only three-foot-eight-inches tall. He was recently adopted by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. They are teaching him to talk slower.

JOHN: I love the sub-heads of this two-disk series: “The Director as Storyteller,” “The Director as Illusionist,” “The Director as Smuggler” and “The director as Iconoclast.” The “Smuggler” examples from film noir are some of the most interesting. The less investment a studio made in a movie the more freedom its director had. With the earlier group of films, I’m not sure that I ever appreciated how much the introduction of sound stopped camera movement (practically speaking everything had to be in range of a microphone) and the examples of how Kazan and Kubrick used wide screen to new purposes in the 50’s and 60’s are also eye-opening. This is a more thoughtful examination of early movies than PBS’s recent history of Warner Brothers’ series, though the conclusions Scorsese reaches apply to all film makers not specifically to his cinematic vision. PS I went out and rented Barry Lyndon after watching this: a big, boring mistake.

GO (3 GOs out of four)

SPANKY: Our guide says, “This is like an imaginary museum, but we can’t enter every room, we just don’t have the time.” He goes beneath the surface with the older films, but stops abruptly when it comes to his contemporaries. Scorsese claims he couldn’t do his friend’s work justice, but I wonder if it isn’t a fear of examining art (besides museum examples) too closely. That analysis is either beyond the creator, or he or she fears stating objectives the audience might not feel are achieved. But if the conclusion is the work must stand on its own, what are we doing watching this instead of the original movies in their entirety? And what’s with the extreme close-ups while he is talking. I started to feel like Scorsese’s dentist. And his concluding belief in the spirituality of films, made me want to swish my brain with water and spit crap out.

I'm currently listening to an audio version of A Walk in the Woods. It's my favorite memoir and has been a staple of my reading life since the first time I cracked it open in the late '90's.

About a year ago, I heard that Robert Redford was thinking of producing and starring in a film adaptation of the book (costarring Paul Newman, awww), but I haven't heard anything lately.

I wrote this post in the summer of 2005 and published it on my first blog, which, for inexplicable reasons, was extremely unpopular. The blog only got about 900 hits in the first year (and about 850 of those were mine), so my entries became more and more sporadic until I quit posting altogether. This is one of my better pieces of writing from that unfortunate blog:

Bill Bryson, 1998, 274 p.

I have never been a non-fiction fan, although I do occasionally pick up a memoir and attempt to read it. Memoirs are not totally factual, (otherwise readers would die of boredom) so I enjoy them every once in awhile. I usually read purely for entertainment, and this is why I appreciate Bill Bryson so much. Bryson started out as a travel writer and now he's branched off into A Short History of Nearly Everything. Quite a leap forward!

Bryson's travel books ARE memoirs, and they are filled with hilarious anecdotes of his adventures and misadventures as he journeys through America or Britain or wherever he happens to be at the time. I have learned quite a bit from his travel/humor books, especially A Walk in the Woods, which is my personal favorite.

I have a few anecdotes of my own concerning A Walk in the Woods. I purchased a used hardcover copy of it in Wayne's World (Waynesboro) Pennsylvania at one of the local flea markets in 1998. The flea market's book selections were abysmal; there were several bodice-rippers, a couple of sorry looking sci-fi books and A Walk in the Woods. Desperate for something to read, and not having much choice in the matter, I purchased the Bryson book with a heavy heart. My reluctance to tackle A Walk in the Woods only lasted about 5 seconds. I was hooked as soon as I read the first couple of pages.

I finished the book in one sitting and was overcome by romantic notions about nature, hiking and especially the Appalachian Trail. Suffused with joyous enthusiasm, I completely forgot Mr. Bryson's numerous descriptions of how difficult and painful the trail could be. It didn't matter because the great outdoors was right there, practically at my doorstep. I knew where the trail was! I could be like Mr. Bryson and have my own Appalachian adventure! My (then) husband didn't need much convincing because he enjoys almost any athletic endeavor, and the kids had to come along because they were kids, so they had no choice in the matter.

All went well for around the first 3 minutes of our first hike, which was close to Wayne's World. It was beautiful, it was quiet, and the air smelled good. All of that changed when we reached THE MOUNTAIN. It was precipitous and rocky and a complete killer. The trail seemed to be about 2 inches wide. By the time we got to the top, I was feeling less enthusiastic about Mr. Bryson. After a short rest, we scrambled down the other side, and, lo and behold, there was THE BIGGER MOUNTAIN. By the time we reached the top of that, I was starting to think I was a total moron to idealize Mr. Bryson and his silly book. There were several more of these mountain climbing incidents, at the end of which, near total collapse, I swore to myself that I would track down Bill Bryson and pelt him to death with acorns or pinecones or squirrel skeletons some other woodsy material.

Over the next couple of months, we went on several more Appalachian trail expeditions, most of them originating in southern Pennsylvania. For some inexplicable reason, my ex and the girls seemed to enjoy them. I, being the spoiled baby of our little group, became more whiny and out-of-sorts with each successive hike. Eventually, we quit hiking altogether, and I'm pretty sure it was because of my attitude. A couple of months later, my already lame marriage really began to fizzle. Could the Appalachian Trail trips have been partly to blame? If I hadn't read A Walk in the Woods, I wouldn't have come up with the brilliant idea of going on these jaunts. If we hadn't gone, my ex wouldn't have seen how horrible I really am. If my ex hadn't seen how horrible I really am...well, you get the picture. This leads me to only one conclusion: Bill Bryson destroyed my marriage!

Here is anecdote #2: In the winter of 2005, my mother was being treated for pneumonia at a community hospital in suburban Denver. She had Alzheimer's and was becoming progressively more confused. Knowing that she had a very short attention span, I brought my dog-eared copy of A Walk in the Woods to the hospital with me. Older daughter and I read aloud and it was a huge hit! We tried to find the amusing parts (of which there are many), and most of the time Mom paid attention and laughed along with us. I had forgotten how fun that little book really is. Thank you, Mr. Bryson. I forgive you.

I recently rediscovered my hardcover copy of The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid sharing space with an old chinese food carton, several mismatched socks, a small aluminum baseball bat and a plethora of dust bunnies under my bed. I

don't think it smells bad, which is always a major determinant of whether I'll give away or throw away. I'd like to give it away because I'll never read it again. If you want it, leave a comment and I'll draw the lucky winner on Monday, Oct. 13th.

My apologies for my prolonged absence. Last week I had an excuse - I was blogging about the Dutch Film Festival here in Utrecht over at filmtotaal - but now I really don't any more, especially since I have much to write about.

For instance, as a tribute to the fantastic actor and human the world was recently robbed off, I re-watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid last week, and in the process introduced the b/f to it (I need to find a nice nickname/acronym for him here, suggestions are welcome). Oddly enough, I think it was more a discovery for me than for him.

See, the first time I watched Butch Cassidy, it was because I'd just seen and loved The Sting, and I wanted more of that. With the same director and main two actors, I kind of expected The Sting v2.0. As a result, I was highly disappointed in Butch Cassidy: I missed the tight plotting and I found it long, meandering, and tonally inconsistent. A second viewing a few months later didn't change my mind much.

This time I absolutely loved it. It's as if I suddenly understand Goldman's purpose with this script, the larger thematic cohesiveness of the whole, the dry, melancholic humor of it all. Yes, I laughed this time, and at the same time this was the first time the ending got to me. I might even like it better now than The Sting...but ask me again once I re-watch that.

Of course, I payed special attention to Newman's performance this time. What's remarkable is that, as a smart man himself by all accounts, he manage to credibly play a guy who only thinks he's smart, who only acts smart. Butch Cassidy is a man who no longer fits in the world he lives in, but is only just starting to realize that. He tried to embrace modernity (in the shape of a bike), but in the end it's unceremoniously thrown aside, because modern developments cannot save him.

A beautiful movie, and a beautiful performance.

Si os lo regalo yo, so pobres.

I don't care for prepared salad dressing (it takes less than five minutes to make your own), but on the rare ocassion when I do buy some, it's usually a bottle of Newman's Own. They are made of quality ingredients and consistently taste good no matter what variety you try. And the profits go to charity! After Paul Newman passed away last week, I bought some Lite Caesar in tribute to him.

I love the labels on the Newman's Own products. They all feature Paul Newman in some form or another. The Lite Caesar has a Roman bust in Newman's likeness. The fig newtons show Newman and wife Joanne Woodward dressed as the farmer and wife from the American Gothic painting. I think this shows that Newman never took himself too seriously, and I like that he often made fun of his good looks.

I enjoy all of Newman's classic roles, but one of my favorite performances of his was in "The Hudsucker Proxy." His character, Sidney J. Mussburger, is so cold, he finishes smoking the cigar of a man who has just committed suicide. He says, "A Monte Cristo is too good to waste."

Here's to a great actor, philanthropist and salad dressing king (his pasta sauces aren't bad either).

Random food fact: Ted Allen's "Food Detectives" found out that is indeed possible to eat 50 eggs like Newman's character did in "Cool Hand Luke."

Been gone for a couple of weeks, in case you’re wondering why no recent posts have sprung up,

Been gone for a couple of weeks, in case you're wondering why no recent posts have sprung up, and am slowly working my way back into things. So I beg your patience as I use today's post as a kind of stream-of-consciousness deliberation on what has transpired in the world since I've been away from my fair city of Denver, a constant broadband connection, and my regular sources of news.

Stock up on canned food and ammo, we are all fucked, fucked, fucked. . .

Economically speaking, that is. Last Monday, the Dow Jones experienced its greatest single-day loss ever. Evar! This was apparently the product of mass panic upon news that the House failed to pass a $700 billion bailout package for the country's largest investment banks, thereby leaving the credit markets as frozen as a stock broker on the ledge.

I learned about this from TV, which was fun, because all the cable news talking heads with their expendable jobs seemed very worried and angry about the whole deal. Why were they angry? Because a majority of congresspeeps, facing contested elections in five weeks, did not have the balls to say "fuck you" to their respective constituencies, which were generally skeptical of the whole deal, and instead voted against the bill and against America's greater interests. Is there irony in this? Yes there is! Many of these jabbering cable TV halfwits were responsible for shaping the American public's misinformed opinion about the bill, characterizing it as a giveaway to the greedy criminal slugs on Wall Street (which it sorta is, in a way).

(Is there more irony in this? Yes there is! As I write, one business day after the bill passed into law, world markets continue their apocalyptic slide into oblivion, proving once and for all that modern capitalism is the call of Cthulhu, and causing Harald Crowley, investor extraordinaire, to run around in a permanent night-sweat whilst blabbering incoherently about his evaporating millions and my student debt.)

Meanwhile, the Republicans blamed the bill's death on Nancy Pelosi for being a partisan bitch who delivered a sucker-punch to the GOP in lieu of a floor speech, while the Democrats blamed the Republicans for, well, voting "no" in majority numbers. All of this bickering was made worthwhile by an indignant Barney Frank, whose breathy, slobbering denunciations of House Repubs looked an awful lot like the fat, sweat-stained old man on the bus screaming about his stolen earmuffs.

I happen to have attended a forum at Texas University on this very day, wherein I learned from some of the brightest scholars of economic law that the truth of the matter is that we may be in for eternal hellfire or zombie world war for all we know, because we don't know nothing, and ain't nothing we can do going to do us no good nohow. Not one of those sonofabitching lawyers even tried to conceal his enthusiasm over this prognosis.

Sarah Palin has no brains

Rumor has it she crapped them out and named them Trig. After embarrassing herself in an interview with Katie Couric (which begs the question, how does one embarrass oneself in front of a woman who has broadcast her rectum on national television?), Palin "redeemed" herself by not turning into a drooling lump of hockey mom during the vice presidential debate. (Props also to Joe Biden, who just barely managed to constrain his old white guy sense of paternalism enough to not seem like a total prick.) How did Palin do this? By answering none of the questions posed by moderator Gwen Ifill, reverting instead to preplanned explanations of her "expert" energy and tax policies, peppered with bits of folksy bumpkinspeak and touretic repetition of the word "maverick." (Funny story about that here.)

Another funny thing I saw Palin do: during a campaign speech in Clearwater, Florida, she alluded to a New York Times article that suggested certain tenuous links between Barack Obama and unrepentant hippie Bill Ayers. This is funny, you see, because when she mentioned the Times her audience let forth with cavernous jeering. And why did they do that? Because they all think the Times is a left-wing propaganda rag for publishing a six-page article on why Sarah Palin is a vindictive political bozo only weeks earlier (among other instances of left-wing propaganda). The inconsistency here, of course, is not that Palin alternately bashes and cites a single publication to suit her political needs, but that she reads.

Paul Newman is dead

But don't worry: his many delectible varieties of salad dressing are still available on the open market--at least until the market fails and we, as a species, turn to rampant looting and devouring our own children.

The playoffs have started!

I can't believe I missed this shit. Part of it might be that my beloved Rockies just barely missed the cut this year--and by "just barely" I mean "by 10 fucking games, goddamned miserable choir boys" I guess this about proves that last season's miraculous run to the World Series was a fluke after all, and not destiny--unless, of course, God specifically put them in the Series to be humiliated on a national stage. I can see God doing this, not least because He has it in for me, but also to punish the Rockies for their audacious feint at piety.

Anyway, my money's on the Cubs, if only for--wait a second. . . what? Shit! Okay, go Phillies! At least the Yankees didn't make it, that's enough to make me happy any year.

According to the September 10 issue of the Hollywood Reporter, award-winning indie writer and direct

According to the September 10 issue of the Hollywood Reporter, award-winning indie writer and director Courtney Hunt ("Frozen River") has signed on to adapt Willy Vlautin's terrific novel "Northline" for Sharp Independent. There's just one not-so small problem, essayed in these two graphs from the Reporter write-up:

Hunt will write and direct the film, based on Willy Vlautin's novel. The project centers on a woman who flees Las Vegas and a troubled life with her boyfriend for a new start in Reno, Nev. She also begins to seek comfort via imaginary conversations with Paul Newman.

In an interview, Hunt said she and Vlautin sent a copy of the book to Newman; Hunt said she hasn't determined how literally to render that plot element.

In Bleeding on the Page in the Middle of a Nervous Breakdown: Willy Vlautin's Northline, I wrote:

Allison encounters kind people along the way – T.J. Watson, a truck driver mourning the loss of his son, a benevolent bartender and his wife, the morbidly obese but warmhearted telephone sales rep, Penny Pearson, who hires her for extra work – but she remains haunted by regrets, fear, and crippling anxiety attacks that are only alleviated by imaginary conversations that she has with Paul Newman. The Paul Newman dialogues are a stunningly original touch by the author and work as a buffer to bring the reader (and Allison) back from the brink of despair and suffocating darkness.

It will be interesting to see how Hunt pulls this off now that Paul Newman has passed. The Newman dialogues are an integral element of Vlautin's novel.

The celebrities listed below this introduction were chosen because they have either been recently

The celebrities listed below this introduction were chosen because they have either been recently in the news or were run across in my non-scientific Internet search. A short explanation is given about some of their comments or actions in favor of Obama but please take it with a large grain of salt as it is in no way complete. In case someone asks, of course there are a small number of stars that support the John McCain / Sarah Palin ticket like Sylvester Stallone, John Voight, Ted Nugent and Charlie Daniels.

It is no secret that most Hollywood and music stars are liberals and have become a reliable source of campaign cash for Democratic candidates. So far according to the Center for Responsive Politics the music and entertainment industry has given over $ 5.6 million to the Obama presidential effort and donated $ 3.4 million to the Hillary Clinton campaign. How did John McCain fare you ask? His campaign has received $ 885,000, total.

Not included are many rap and hip-hop stars like 50 Cent, Chamillionare, Scarface, etc., because around 95% of their community supports Obama’s candidacy. To list them all would take forever. They support Obama by using clothes with Obama’s image on them on stage, by putting up Obama or Obama/Biden banners at their concerts, etc. Almost all speak favorably of the candidate and hope the more outspoken members of their community tone down their support for fear of alienating voters that do not understand what their music is about. Some artists have said they support and will vote for Obama because he is one of them. Others say he is the most qualified for the job with race having nothing to do with their decision. To say that they are excited about this election is an understatement!

Below the stars, more or less in alphabetical order, listed by their last name. Looking for Oprah? She’s under W for Winfrey. How about Jay-Z? He’s under C for Shawn Carter. Homer Simpson? Try S for Homer Simpson. Yes, even Homer tries to vote for Obama.

Enjoy. Or not.

Jeffery Jacobs Abrams (J. J. Abrams): Has donated at least $ 2,300 to the Obama campaign.

Has donated the maximum possible, $ 4,600, to the Obama campaign.
