Making payment to Fundsupermart (FSM) from internet banking is easy, just select "iFast Financial" as the payee. For Citibank internet banking, iFast is not in the payee list, so I need to pay by electronic cheque.

However, the text box is not long enough to type in the payee "iFAST Financial-Client Trust Account" (!). Citibank said this is a system limitation, so I ask FSM for a shorter payee name and it is "iFAST Financial-Client Trust Acc". Below is the information for setting up cheque payment to FSM.

Pakistan needs a "substantial" injection of external funds if it is to improve its worsening economic situation, an IMF official has said.

Mohsin Khan said Pakistan had not yet requested help from the IMF, which some economists have called for, to address a growing balance of payment crisis.

A falling rupee, soaring inflation and dwindling currency reserves are among Pakistan's mounting economic problems.

Mr Khan said ministers planned to cut borrowing and tap donors for support.

Economic distress

Stabilizing Pakistan's faltering economy will be one of the main priorities for Asif Ali Zardari, who is widely expected to be elected president following elections this weekend.

Pakistan's public finances have deteriorated in the past 18 months amid political instability and violence which culminated in the resignation of former President Musharraf last month.

The rupee has fallen to a record low against the dollar while currency reserves have shrunk from $16.5bn ten months ago to $9.38bn.

The soaring cost of oil imports has eaten into the country's reserves while the spiraling rate of inflation, which has risen to 25%, has sparked public anger.

Growth in the economy, which performed strongly in the early years of the Musharraf era, is expected to fall to a six-year low this year.

Pakistan's fragile coalition government is pursuing a range of options to bolster confidence in the economy, including seeking $1bn in loans from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

It is also in talks with Saudi Arabia to defer payment on an estimated $5.9bn of oil it has purchased.

Some economists believe it is inevitable Pakistan will have to turn to the IMF for help should it find itself struggling to pay its creditors.

Such a move could prove unpopular as any IMF funding would likely require undertakings to slash government borrowing and spending.

On the other hand, such a scenario is unlikely to materialise given the level of US financial and logistical support for Pakistan, a key ally.

Seeking stability

The IMF said it was encouraged that the government was committed to measures to improve its financial position, including privatizing assets and raising funds from the international markets.

"If measures outlined are implemented and sufficient financing is secured quickly," Mr Khan - director of the IMF's Middle East and Central Asia Department said, "the authorities could stabilize the economy this year and start to build up reserves."

Despite attempts by the country's central bank to reassure foreign investors, concerns remain about the new government's ability to tackle multiple security and economic challenges.

"It seems the government is not getting its act together, making it difficult to actively address the decline in forex reserves," said Yang-Myung Hang, a sovereign rating analyst at Lehman Brothers.

A couple days ago, I received an e-mail from my editor at The Fort Pierce Tribune with a "new improved contract" attached. (Remember my old post, "The good, the bad and the ugly of my freelance contract.")

She and another editor came up with it "for people who have proven themselves to be dependable and good reporters/writers." She said she hopes the increased pay scale will help me out a lot.

Compared to previously making $50 to $65 per story, I will now earn $85 to $100 depending on where the story runs in the newspaper. They also added a $12 travel expense for covering an assignment outside my home county.

However, I still don't receive any benefits or gas coverage. It won't be enough to buy health insurance and definitely won't cover all my bills. The main thing is that I'm getting the experience I need in a town that I know and love.

And it sure feels good to be able to say I got a raise.

Also, my editor asked if I'd be interested in writing for their business journal, a monthly publication with stories on businesses. She said they're looking to improve story quality and can set up an interview with the business journal's editor next week.

More on that to come.

Getting sued is a terrible thing. The prospect of having to go to court, the possibility of a judg

Getting sued is a terrible thing. The prospect of having to go to court, the possibility of a judgment on your credit report, and having to meet a debt collector face to face fills most people with dread. Unfortunately, once that suit is filed, there is very little you can do to get out of going to court.

Filing a suit costs a collector money, which they hope to collect in the judgment. But, that cost is a risk the lawyers take. Therefore, by the time they file suit, they are fairly sure about the following:

You ARE the debtor that is responsible for the debt.

You probably have the ability to pay after the judgment.

You probably have an asset they can place a lien against.

It is unlikely that you have a defense.

Now, if you really aren’t the debtor that is responsible for that account, simply take that documentation to court and you will win. Similarly, if the collector has violated the FDCPA, you can win the case. However, if you really owed that money, you could be in trouble from the start. You will also win if the debt is older than the statute of limitations in your state has expired for legal action on a debt.

If you are not responsible, you will need to file a response to the suit with the court that you have been summoned to. The response process is different depending on the jurisdiction, but your court probably has a web site that details the process. Be detailed in your response, and make sure the court has the information it needs to settle the case.

On the other hand, it could really be your debt. In that case, you have two options: You can go fight the suit and probably lose, or you can try for a settlement with the collector.

If you choose to settle, remember that the collector has invested money in the case, and they will want to recover those costs. So, the amount you pay will go up. Also, you are basically out of bargaining power at this point. They have a case prepared, and they have a high level of confidence that they will win.

If you run into this situation, a settlement early is often a good thing to do. Try to get the collector to waive interest, and as much of the principle as possible. Then, get a payment schedule set up and make the payments on time.

Remember, they sued you once. If you default on a payment schedule, they will absolutely sue you again.

I just realised i am a payment defaulter for bills which have never ever reached me!!! Oh man, and what's that $300 deposit to transfer ownership due to "irregular payment"??!! Seriously, i don't understand. I have made all the arrangements so damn long ago and now the system reflects me as having outstanding payments. Aiyo, why like that? Guys, request for black and white (and don't discard it) next time you're doing transactions, to safeguard your interests..Sigh.

------------------------

Well, i have sth to say about this little red dot! A question to ponder upon: Is development correlated to civilisation? The incident Fanny mentioned, the shoving and pushing i exprience everyday on buses and trains, the *roll eye* behaviours (read: impatient and looking down on) by many people when attending to some who need more explanations, the *act blur* acts of singaporeans and supermarkets in taking and handing out, respectively, plastic bags on Wednesday without any reminders on using a shopping bag instead.

I'm not a saint, nor is anyone. I confess i do not always remember the no plastic bag day. But at least the supermarket can try to persuade consumers in doing so right? Otherwise, it would just be putting on a show to the world that Singapore is going green, but actually there's only green plants here. And public behaviours is getting on my nerves. Can wait for people to alight before you push your way in? Can say excuse me when you want to get across?

I will try my best to be a considerate citizen because i know the irritatedness (is there such a word?) inconsiderate ones pose.

Often, when you are starting out to build or rebuild credit, you will have a very difficult time get

Often, when you are starting out to build or rebuild credit, you will have a very difficult time getting a credit card. The creditors look at you and see that you are too large a risk to work with. When that happens, you can either keep trying different creditors, or you can try to get a secured credit card or secured loan through your credit union or bank.

There are really two types of credit available. ‘Secured’ credit means that the lender holds something of value so that if you default, they can get their money back. ‘Unsecured’ means that the lender is taking a bigger chance, and will have nothing they can take from you if you default. Because they have less recourse, a lender will typically charge a higher interest rate for an unsecured loan than for a secured loan. This is why a car loan often has a lower interest rate than a credit card; if you stop paying for the car, they take it back.

Getting a secured loan still requires a credit check. When I got mine, Wells Fargo would give me a secured loan, but not a secured credit card. They apparently considered one line of credit enough, and wanted me to prove myself after my bankruptcy. I got a $500.00 secured loan. Here is how that worked:

I game them $500.00 in cash to open a new savings account.

They gave me a secured loan for $500.00, which meant they game me a $500.00 check.

For the next 12 months, about $48.00 per month came out of my checking account to pay off the loan.

At the end of the loan, I got my $500.00 back.

You can see how the process works. Wells Fargo protected themselves by keeping $500.00 of my money, while they gave me a $500.00 loan. It cost them nothing, and in fact they made interest over the next year on my money!

What I ended up with was 12 entries on my credit report that showed on time payments, at all three credit bureaus. My scores went up a LOT (along with other work I was doing), and I ended up coming out ahead of the game.

I ended up with a line of credit for $500.00. What I should have done was go back when it was over to get a $1,000.00 loan, and then a $2,000.00 loan. I should have kept adding money to the loan to get a much higher line of credit open, and I should have kept making payments for as long as the loan was open.

If you are looking for a secured loan or credit card, I would suggest using your bank or credit union as a first stop. If you have a balance in your account, they are likely to work with you. After that, try Orchard bank or Capital One for a secured credit card.
