Nitro PDF Professional es un software que permite la visualización, edición y creación de documentos PDF (a diferencia de Adobe Reader que solo permite “ver” un PDF). Nitro PDF Professional presenta un aspecto visual sencillo y muy agradable a la vista con un sistema de menús similar al del nuevo MS Office 2007.

En cuanto al funcionamiento, en mi opinión, presenta un mejor rodamiento de páginas que Adobe Reader (no va “a tirones” al bajar de página como me ocurría con Adobe Reader) a costa solo de un poco más de RAM: en una prueba que hice con un PDF pesado, Adobe Reader cargaba en RAM 50MB mientras que Nitro PDF cargaba 90MB; sin embargo, la sensación de continuidad al pasar de página no tiene comparación. Posee un sistema de pestañas (al estilo Firefox) que hace mucho más cómodo el manejo de varios PDFs a la vez evitando tener un montón de ventanas abiertas en la barra de tareas, lo cual siempre es incómodo.

En cuanto a la integración del programa, se pueden añadir menús a MS Office desde los cuales se puede crear directamente los PDFs y se integra perfectamente en los menús contextuales del explorador de Windows. Además instala una impresora virtual para que podamos crear nuestros PDFs desde cualquier aplicación.

Quizás alguno de vosotros tenga instalado Adobe Acrobat Professional en alguna de sus versiones, el cual sí permite crear y editar PDFs. Yo lo tuve, en concreto la versión 8 pero decidí borrarla. ¿Por qué? Lo tengo muy claro: Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 ocupaba instalado en disco 1,256 GB mientras que Nitro PDF ocupa tan solo 68 MB!!! No dudo de la eficacia de una marca como Acrobat y de que tiene infinidad de opciones más pero, ¿realmente el usuarios va a usar todas? Yo, con Nitro PDF tengo más que de sobra (y eso que con los programas que uso suelo ser exigente).

Más a fondo:

Vamos a ver por encima las opciones que incluye Nitro PDF Professional a través de sus menús:

• Tools: en realidad no es un menú; es un grupo de botones que está presente siempre en primer plano en todos los menús. Permite seleccionar la “mano” para desplazarse por el documento, hacer zoom, copiar una instantánea del PDF al portapapeles y copiar o editar texto existente.
• Home: Crear PDF desde un archivo, desde un scanner o a partir del contenido del portapapeles; combinar varios PDFs para formar un solo fichero; exportar PDF a Word, a un fichero RTF o extraer el texto e imágenes por separado; visualización de miniaturas de las páginas, comentarios, marcadores, etc.; buscar texto en el documento.
• Insert and Edit: Insertar texto; agregar encabezados y pies de página y números de página; insertar imágenes o marcas de agua; insertar páginas desde otro PDF o borrar, extraer, reemplazar, rotar o recortar páginas del PDF actual; adjuntar otros documentos al PDF; insertar marcadores o hipervínculos.
• Review: Añadir notas; resaltar, subrayar o tachar texto; dibujar rectángulos, círculos, flechas y otras formas; dibujar a mano alzada; añadir cuadros de texto; poner sellos; varias opciones para añadir, editar y eliminar comentarios.
• Forms: Editar, insertar e importar y exportar varias herramientas sobre formularios como campos de texto, botones, cuadros de listas, etc.
• Secure and Sign: Añadir seguridad al documento con passwords, certificados, firmas digitales, etc.
• View: Opciones para modificar la vista del documento: página simple o continua, doble página, rotar vista, ajustar página, etc.
• Help: Desde él se puede acceder a la guía de usuario y a una guía rápida que recorre las principales características del programa; acceder al soporte online, mandar sugerencias; buscar actualizaciones; registro, etc.

Prácticamente, todas estas opciones son las que yo usaba con Adobe Acrobat Professional y las encuentro ahora en Nitro PDF, solo con 68MB instalados y prácticamente el mismo consumo de RAM. Mi HD me lo agradeció.

Pequeñas pegas:

• Solo está disponible en inglés.
• Esto no sé si es fallo de mi PC o del programa: cuando creamos un fichero desde el menú contextual del explorador de Windows seleccionando “Convert to PDF” nos crea el PDF, sí, pero además adjunta a este PDF el fichero original, con lo que el peso del PDF aumenta y quizás no deseemos incluir el fichero original para que nadie pueda utilizarlo y modificar nuestro trabajo. Se supone que para esto hay una opción que permite decidir si se añade o no el fichero. Yo la tengo deseleccionada pero aún así me lo adjunta. Por eso recomiendo siempre crear el PDF abriendo el fichero desde la aplicación original y usando la impresora PDF en vez de hacerlo desde el menú contextual del explorador.

CONVERTERS/CREATORS
There are also converters that you may not know you had. The OpenOffice suite of applications have "export to PDF" features built right in. Microsoft Office 2007 also has an add-on that you can use to convert your office documents directly to PDF. If you would prefer not to install any software at all, the free Zamzar will convert your files to PDF (and other formats as well).

A firmware update scheduled to drop later this week will allow Sony Readers to use the .epub format, an open standard (with DRM support) that has the backing of several major book publishers. This means you'll be able to get books from sources other than Sony's own Connect store, which currently only has one third the titles of Amazon's Kindle store. The Kindle, however, currently uses the Mobipocket format for its Kindle Store books, and does not yet support .epub.

...EPUB. It is known more technically as "the International Digital Publishing Forum’s XML-based standard format for reflowable digital books and publications." Many book publishers apparently are already publishing upcoming ebooks in this format and this is something Sony wants to capitalize on by making the Reader the first device of its type to support this. The Reader model PRS-505, starting next month, will be able to let users access ebooks in the EPUB format. It will also support, said Sony, Adobe ebooks with DRM protection as well as "the capability to reflow standard text-based Portable Document Format (PDF) eBooks for improved flexibility and readability." These Adobe updates will be possible with the use of Adobe Digital Editions 1.5 software.

To paraphrase another, admittedly more significant milestone, that took place nearly forty years ago this week, "That's one small step for a reader, one giant leap for e-books."

Adopting an open format can only help accelerate the range of choices for readers, which in turn will help drive demand for more titles, and other documents that could be stored on an e-reader. Note that the E-pub standard allows for DRM to be applied after the conversion process, which makes it up to the publisher whether the content is protected or not.

It remains to be seen whether Amazon's rumored Kindle 2.0 will support this standard. One piece of information was notably absent from all the hoopla around the Sony announcement this week. Sony recently made a major announcement about their corporate strategy and it contained the following quote:

Ensure that 90% of our electronics product categories are network-enabled and wireless-capable by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011 (“FY2010”)

No mention this week about when the Sony Reader will have this capability. To my mind, this is the feature that most differentiates Sony's reader from the Kindle. Despite Kindle's less than elegant form factor and interface, the ability to download content wirelessly, at no extra cost, puts it miles ahead of anything else in the category. When does Sony plan to incorporate the wireless feature into their reader? (The PSP already has it, and so do a couple of their TVs.) Until they do, they will remain a distant second in the e-reader world, despite their adoption of a more open format of e-books.

Basta colocar o seguinte comando antes da função session_start(), assim ficando:

Pronto! Agora o Internet Explorer abrirá o PDF normalmente e entederá todas as variáveis de sessão ($_SESSION) normalmente.

Que vantagens nos dá a adoção deste formato? Pois para começar tem sido muito bem recebido por todos os interessados em que o formato de livro eletrônico funcione, além disso, este formato é baseado em XML, nos oferece texto fluido, que entre outras vantagens, adapta o texto ao tamanho da tela e ao tipo e tamanho da fonte que tenhamos selecionado por padrão em nossa leitor. Também conservando a vantagem dos arquivos PDF, isto é, a conservação do formato e estrutura original do documento.

Esta atualização de software poderá ser baixada a partir do próximo mês, mas desde já podemos optar por outra atualização que melhora a compatibilidade com o formato PDF da Adobe, permitindo ler arquivos PDF protegidos, entre outras melhorias.

While the profit margin for eBook is still small, they cost nothing to produce and are another way for people to find your titles. By participating in eBook repurposing, titles are more searchable and more user friendly.

Where do you read an eBook? That's the great thing. You can read an eBook everywhere. From your computer at your desk, your laptop, your book device - like Sony Reader or Kindle, and even from your cell phone. The portability and flexibility of the technology means that your eBook will travel with people much like a paper book would.

And, here's another bonus. While I haven't seen any hard and fast statistics, the general concensus among publishers is that eBooks INCREASE paper copy sales! Not decrease, but increase. When a person falls in love with a book in digital format, they seem to be more likely to purchase the paper copy down the road. Also, if this is the first thing they have read by you and they like it, readers are likely to search for more titles from an author they met in eBook. How exciting would it be to have someone read your eBook and next time they go to a bookstore, they pick up something else by you?! That would be pretty cool!

So, spend some time getting to know this new technology. If your book is in PDF then your book can be an eBook! Increase your exposure, your portability, and your reach into new technologies by participating in eBook.
