Often they're about celebrities. I don't understand this, because I don't keep up with the world of stardom much, but I imagine that movies I watch, or the celebrity gossip that pops up on my home page enters my brain and decides to stay for a while. They aren't usually celebrities that I'm that interested in, either.

A few weeks ago, I interviewed Britney Spears and her mother, Lynne in my sleep. We all piled onto Lynne's cushy, orange (and frankly, tacky) taffeta bedspread in her huge bedroom and I asked a barrage of nosy questions. There were lots of furry designer puppies and fake smiles all around, and although they were really nice, the whole thing felt sort of phony and forced to me. We still had fun, and I hope to submit the resulting article to a magazine in another, upcoming dream.

I have no interest in Gilbert or Brit, but I was glad to welcome Johnny Depp to my subconscious the other night. He came to a hoedown that my family was hosting in a big barn somewhere out in the sticks. It was a very countrified dream, and Johnny showed up with Becky, a sixty-year old woman I used to work with (though in reality, Becky looks about forty). They made such a cute couple that I wasn't even jealous. In fact, Johnny and I became big buddies during that hallucination-- great pals, fast friends. I even asked him if he wanted me to cut his hair, but he said he had to go. I left the party first however, and there was this lovely  sequence where I was driving through small country towns in the drizzling rain, passing buildings and railroad cars that were hazy and gray in the mist.

I love my dreams. Occasionally they turn bad, but usually they're either extremely funny, or so surreal that I never want to stop watching.

Dead people visit me while I'm sleeping sometimes, and I'm always so happy to see them. They only show up occasionally, and are usually trying to instruct me or guide me in some way. The friends and family members in these dreams seem so real that I could almost touch them. One time, my father was trying to help me win a poker game. I swear, I could feel his actual presence, like a gift he was bringing me.

The dreams that fascinate me the most are those that seem to contain messages about the world, and/or my place in it. They're almost like visions. I once had an amazing one where Martin Luther King, Jr. handed me some pamphlets and told me to go out and distribute them. It was another one that seemed so real that when I awoke, I was ready to throw on some clothes, grab the literature Martin had given me, and start going door-to-door handing them out.

Here's the one I had last night: I hope I can explain it well. There was an approaching hurricane, and I watched these palm trees that were swaying and bending almost to the ground. I saw people running and scurrying, preparing themselves and their homes for the oncoming assault. I was very calm, and as I observed them, I realized, This is the way the world works. It's this beautiful ballet, where events change, things move and bend, and we humans move and bend in accordance. It felt like such a revelation to me, and my mind moved on to other things-- bombings and natural disasters and tragedies. I saw the World Trade Center collapse, but instead of it being a horror show,  I saw it as the same sort of fascinating dance. The towers collapsed, people fell, lives fell apart, but then, everyone started slowly moving, and pushing back the other way, toward healing and the reconstruction of their world. I saw Hurricane Katrina, and the devastation it caused, but again I saw the movement of people pushing back against tragedy, and I realized that this is what we do and have done time after time throughout the ages. It was incredible, silent and gentle, and I watched the human beings in my dream all engaged in this beautiful choreography of strength and survival. It gave me hope, and a new respect for the people I share the world with. In my mind, I was seeing the human condition in a new way– one that involved physics and poetry and motion, tremendous strength and great beauty.

I lay in bed just sort of saying an inner "wow" for a few minutes before I woke up. I'm still sort of saying "wow" tonight. I can't wait to go to sleep though. Maybe Johnny will come back-- without Becky.

Up until the king hit the river, I was very confident I was ahead.  In theory, on the turn I should win this hand about 94% of the time, right?  So the big, protect-the-hand bets were good bets.

I did win my way back up to my original buy-in with just a few more hands of play.  Then it was my turn for quads.  I had 55 and the flop came A59 and I had 2 players with me.  I bet just under the pot and had 2 callers.  When the turn came 5, I didn't really know what to do.  I figured it was time to show some weakness.  The river was a 3 and no flush possibility.  First player checked with little left in his stack, I was sure he was shipping it all in no matter what I bet.  I just wanted to get something from the other player.  I went ahead and bet out half the pot and he folded.  The first player put in the rest tabling 88, I'm not sure what he was thinking.

For the record, I did lose a little tiny bit against a player who made quad jacks.  Everyone checked it down most of the way with 2 jacks on the flop.  when the third jack hit the river I thought maybe my small pair might make the best full house so I bet small just to see and the quad jacks just called for some reason.

That's a lot of quads to be up against for just a few hundred hands, no?

It's nice to listen to when I'm playing, but I hope they have less donkament and more poker discussions now that the WSOP is over.

THis is a big mistake here pushing with 22 on a ok looking board.  I thought i may increase my stack my 600 when I had 1K left. I had put him on face cards like AKo. This was a bad push not knowing the player. *************** BIG ERROR*****************

Maybe someone could tell me, how many disconnections is normal? Am I beling unrealistic expecting say 95% access, or otherwise 5% failure rate, or should it be pretty much on all the time? I appreciate that ADSL 2 is relatively new and it is still going out over copper which, given the age of the cables and the sheathing, is pretty old and tired. The problem is that I am a big user and there are times where disconnection could be a financial disaster.

I got a comment about being old fashioned in having a home phone at all. If it was only me, I probably wouldn't, but my wife spends a lot of the time on the phone, especially to family some of whom whom simply could not afford to call a mobile with today's rates.

Anyway, it's time to stop blogging, actually, I do have one more to do on my songwriting blog and then in an hour or so I am off to play in the regional final of the NPPL poker tournament, having finished in the top 5 for the season at my venue of Bar Africa, which is a good thing as it appears we are about to be hit by the worst storm in 10 years and they are saying unless you have to go out, stay inside. Good day for poker, I say.

If you can make 500k playing poker this year, well a: your probably not reading this and b: I'm not really talking to you.  But if you are grinding the micro stakes, looking to build your roll, and come up through the ranks...listen up.

Playing poker for a living can often be like chasing a ghost.  You have wins here and there, you study, you practice, you talk about hands with friends, you watch videos on Cardrunners.  At the end of a successful year, lets say you are up $15k.  That's great!  And well above average in terms of the poker economy.

What's not so great is what that $15k cost you in terms of real world time.  Think about all the social functions you skipped out on during the year because you were deep in a tournament and just couldn't get away.  If poker was your fulltime job, think about all the conversations you missed out on at an office, on the bus, on the street, at the golf course.  All because you were chained to your desktop playing 20tables of .05/.1.

Now, I'm not trying to suggest there aren't benefits to this type of lifestyle.  There certainly are: freedom, flexibility, travel.  I guess its just the fact that the poker community starts to feel a little incestuous at times.  It is a small small world, where many people in the poker world over value themselves, and what they are contributing to society.

Personally, for me to live a fulfilled life I need social connections.  Money comes and goes.  But without friendships, new and old, a significant other, and family.. you just don't have much else.  I am concerned for a lot of people having moderate success online at a young age.  If you won $100k last year it can be tough to balance the proposition of looking for an entry level job paying you $45k/year.  That's assuming you graduated from college and haven't dropped out yet.  But try not to look at the dollar figure.  Try thinking along the lines of the people you are going to meet, the projects you are going to learn about, and the skills you are going to gain.

Having friends in the poker world is great.  But, I'd argue it's more important to have friends that don't care about who check raised you on the turn with a gutter ball and got there on the river.  

I guess what got me thinking about this is the fact that I'm writing this from a rooftop deck, overlooking Alcatraz, on a beautiful sunny day, surrounded by people I don't even know.   It's a cool concept called Jelly founded by this guy named Amit Gupta.  He's smart, and runs a site called Photojojo.

Basically the premise behind Jelly is to have a social gathering at a place where people can work on projects of all kinds.  There are a bunch of programmers and creative type people at this thing, and that's mainly a function of the types of people that can randomly show up someplace to work.  Your typical 9 to 5 doesn't allow you that much flexibility.

Generally, I do most of my work from home or in a hotel room.  Most of the time by myself, or a very small group of people.  It's not always that great.  As annoying as the micro-managing boss can be about sending you those emails every five seconds, or the office water-cooler type chatter that you could care less about there is still some value to those social interactions.  

The way we communicate is changing.  Facebook, Texting, and Email are the primary ways I talk to my closest circle of friends.  Phone calls are becoming a lot less common.  In person contact is becoming even more rare.  Is this good?  I don't know, but I know Jelly concepts are great.

ok.. ok ok.. so no more messing around. Really want to focus and fold hands like AJo and AQo and fold alot of sb because I have been getting caught with flopping draw and I play them to agro and lost alot of chips. Only want to stick to AA, KK, QQ and AKo or JJ again. AKo and JJ are still not the best of hands. I do have to makes sure I do not lose more than 400 chips with AKo or JJ hand. I really have to think if I want to call an all-in with JJ.

I can make up to 272 profit if I make 1st in all four. 68 net win If I win one. Lets see what I can make out of 272 net profit challenge. I am really going to tight my early game up. very basic abc STG's. If i am playing basic ABC poker. I "should" have atleast 70 hand to 80 hands in each STG. That means I have to wait for my first hand to be at least TT+ maybe JJ and AQs+ for now.

Top left table had QQ. raised. took down the blinds. Keep writing and keep playing good cards. Remember you should have atleast 70 to 80 hand in each STG. 2. Plenty of time to steal blind later with silly hands and plenty of time to push. watch the people to the left and watch the blinds and watch your chip stack.. it's that simple. can't go wrong unless you push wrong. DO NO PUSH WRONG. doen'st matter how many people are left. do not push wrong and watch your chip stack compare to the blinds. You can wait for 10 BB level as well as let it go down to 7 BB since these are not turbo games. focus and win.. remember you are playing with donks. let them make the donk moves and you push with the correct cards.

You have to see this donkeyness. oh lord. guy with T checks. Why? only god knows why. He felt he had AA than he calls my push.. gets pushed with guy who had trips. with his donk pairs. the worst play by two donks.. Me and the worst donk than me. I push with straight down with chance to increase my stack by 33%. pot was 300. I had about 900. Correct play looking back on the correct play was the bet 150.. worst than is I have 750 chips and I am in push mode or check and see the action. Lesson learned.

than I bust out of second game with with 88 vs KK with me having 88 on the button. I had about 1k to 1K chips left. STG say it's a push so that's a good push. I am happy with it.

Than in game 3. I go and bad beat a guy with KJo vs AKo.

Two games left. Look at this T2o push. You make that push. It's a very good push by STG. so yes. it's a good push.

I had pushed on game 2 with 52s from button with about 10BB. ok push I guess. I can wait for better hand because people with call with hand like KTs. I don't about this push. very marginal

Bridge is a game that was played regularly by my grandparents and parents. As a result, I learned this game at a very young age. I still have many fond memories of sitting beside my grandparents while they played their weekly bridge game at our home. It was fascinating to see the dynamics between the four individuals who were playing. Being a team based game, I remember being told how critical it was to carefully select partners and develop relationships. Like any team based game there were arguments and disagreements over how certain hands were played, which actually added an exciting dynamic to the game. 

On the surface, bridge appears to be a simple game with set rules of how to play the 13 cards each individual is dealt. However, that is only the beginning. There are many intricacies and conventions which arise when you begin to talk about bidding tactics, counting cards, table play and being able to read your partners as well as the opponents. Some parallels I can draw from bridge in comparision to strategic thinking are:

1. Teamwork: Without teamwork bridge cannot be played optimally. It requires both partners to have established understanding of each other's style of playing  as well as the  conventions they follow and play to. From a strategic point of view one can draw parallels to business teams, as it is easy to tell which teams work well together as compared to those who don't. When a team is not looking at ways to improve communication and productivity together, they are missing out on massive potential. Therefore establishing team building skills through games like bridge can be extremely beneficial.

2. Communication: Bridge is all about communicating with your partner the strengths and weaknesses of your hand , and then go on to play the hand optimally. However, the bidding process is complicated and requires a deep understanding of bidding styles and conventions as well as interpretation of your partners bids. The team which is able to communicate most effectively is usually the one with a substantial advantage in the game. Strategically, the same conclusions can be reached regarding communication. If teams do not communicate effectively they will suffer as  a result. On the other hand effective team communication can develop into defining competitive advantages over peers.

3. Instincts: Trusting your gut becomes easier with time and experience. Initially there is doubt about one's instincts even when it appears to be a logical sequence. In bridge one needs to accurately place  one's opponents cards relative to bidding and past rounds. There needs to be confident dependence on one's ability to trust one's counting & retentive skills as well as instinct in the placement of cards. This develops ones ability to rely on one's instinct with greater comfort. Trusting your instincts when developing and executing strategy is necessary. Without it, you lack the confidence and ability to communicate effectively with the rest of the team. 

Bridge is an enjoyable game which sharpens analytical and team building skills. Unfortunately it is not a mainstream game and therefore does not enjoy the popularity of other card games such as poker. Nonetheless, it is a game I recommend, so learn it and play it as recreational activity among your team.

I was watching FRIENDS episode "The one with all the poker". And I kind of agree with Chandler when he says, women are not that good at Poker.

I just think women and poker dont go together.

Thankqeher and I get there at 7:15 while Radersquad was meeting us at 7:30 and we grabbed a drink, Makers on the rocks with a splash of coke.  That's quickly becoming a favorite of mine.  Radus got there a couple minutes later and we went to the table.  The way this place works is its upscale Chinese that features large dishes big enough for 2-3 people with half orders available.  Rader and thankq had been here before so I let them take the lead on suggesting what we get.  I did however veto Raders chicken and broccoli suggestion because something about $48 for a chicken and broccoli dish didn't feel right and figured there were some more interesting dishes on the menu.  Now onto  our  courses.  We decided to each start with a won-ton soup.  This was one of the best won-ton soups I've had as the wontons were like shumai with such thin wrappers and had a little spice to them and the broth was so smooth with some fresh onions mixed in to add a little flavor.  Was a nice start to the meal.  Next came our two orders of the chicken satay.  I had heard these were amazing and couldn't wait to be the judge.  Well let me tell you I've never had anything like these before.  They were lightly pan-fried and covered in this semi thick white sauce that had an orangish tint and a little bit of kick.  The dish was absolutely phenomenal.  For our dinner we decided to split the Beijing Chicken, House Me Mignon (Half order) , and the Special Prawns (Half order).  When these dishes came out I knew we were in for a treat.  Rader and Thankq had been talking about the Beijing chicken so I tried that first.  This stuff was amazing.  It was chicken with walnuts in a sweet brown sauce that just had so much flavor and wasn't overly heavy like traditional Chinese restaurants.  Next I tried the Me Mignon.  This was a filet that was lightly crusted on the outside and extremely tender on the inside with a sweet brown sauce ( very similar to a Worcestershire sauce but a lot sweeter and tastier).  Lastly I tried the Special prawns.  Wow these were my favorite by far.  They were butterflied prawns with this sauce smothered over them that was amazing.  It was a light sweet sauce that was very spicy but not to the point where you were just tasting spice but still got all of the flavor of the dish.  This was by far my favorite dish.  After we were done there wasn't a single scrap of food left.  We paid the check and went home.

I'm not going to get into the poker too much as I have to review the hand histories but it was beyond bad.  I had "one of those nights" where my opponent had the nuts every other hand and it was impossible.  Ended up losing about 2k last night in a short amount of time and I wasn't making any silly plays or dumb calls.

Poker game using playing cards which the players bet  the value of the card combination through his (”hand”) in their possession, by placing a bet into a central . Winner must one who holds  the hand with the highest value according to an established hand ranking hierarchy, and likewise the player who remains in the hand after all others have folded(the player who makes an un-bet.)

Poker has many variations and those are the following  that has similar pattern of playing and using the same hand ranking. Those are the three main families of variants, largely grouped by the protocol of card-dealing and betting:”Straight”, Stud, Draw, Community.

One, two or more players are usually required to make force, usually either an ante or a blind bet (sometimes both). The dealer shuffle the following cards, the player one chair to his right cuts the following , and the dealer deals the appropriate number of cards to the players one at a time. Cards may be dealt either face-up or face-down, depending on the variant of poker being played. After the initial deal, the first of what may be several betting rounds begins. Between that  rounds, the players hands develop in some way, often by being dealt  for the additional cards or replacing cards previously dealt. At the end of each round,bets are gathered into the central pot.

Time during a betting round, if one player bets and no opponents choose to “call” (match) the bet and instead “fold”, the hand ends immediately, the bettor is awarded the pot, no cards are required to be shown, and the next hand begins. This is what makes possible. Bluffing is a primary feature of poker, one that distinguishes it from other vying games and from other games that make use of poker hand rankings

Their are many types of playing cards. But for many of us poker is being the will known poker game especially to some will known people in the community. In Las Vegas where casino are being known mostly of the player played poker. Their are many variations of poker those are the following Straight, Stud, Draw and community.

Another type of poker that being being will known was Black Jack and Red  Dog.Poker started when games was being incorporate betting, hand rankings, and bluffing by the 15th century. As they said poker is resembled to Persians game. Like bingo poker can also play online. Now a day you cannot only play poker.

But the rest of week was filled with ups and downs. It all culminated today with what I wrote about my experiences. After winning a big hand online with 95 off suit (a really crappy hand for you non-poker players), here's what I wrote:

...upon putting the right read on my opponent, I was able to play the rest of the hand well. Probably the best I’ve ever played a hand to date.

But now I think I’m getting a little too sucked into the game, the competitiveness, the adrenaline, the roller coaster ride, and the deception. I’m pretty laid back and its not in my nature to be this way.

I need to find a little perspective as to whether all this stress is for me or not. I can see how this could affect relationships with friends, family, and one’s outlook on life. So I may take a little break from the game to figure that out. Either I’ll come back refreshed and renewed, or decide that this is not for me professionally… just something I do for fun.

I wrote that about a week ago. And with time to reflect, I ask myself the same question again… Can poker as a ministry work? My maybe-yes answer from before is now leaning towards a maybe-no. Yes, loving on these folks is easy, and building solid relationships will take time which is true in any area. That is the nature of living your life out in faith. 

But that's contradictory to the nature of the game as described above. It sucks you in. It sucked me in for the short time that I played seriously. If you don't have that accountability with others who share your perspective, it can be a long dark road to find your way back. I'm glad there those that'll keep me on the right track. 

So where does that leave me? Still on a poker hiatus except for our friendly Monday night games. And probably on a path back to a "real" job. Hopefully something to do with design, photography, travel, new media, non-profits, ministry, or any combination of the above.

If it seems unfair that poker rooms take a percentage of your winnings, keep in mind that rake is one of the poker room's primary source of income. If they didn’t take money via the rake, they could potentially go under due to all the money paid out. Consider the rake a fee you pay for playing at the casino—somewhat like the interest rate you pay on a credit card. The interest rate is your fee for the privilege of buying on credit. Rake is a fee for the privilege of gambling online. That being said, you want to keep your interest rates low and your rakeback percentage high.

Often, poker players are mostly interested in payout percentages and sign-up bonuses. Obviously, these are highly important as well, but you also need to factor in rakeback. Most of the time, you won't be able to sign up for a particular's site's rackback, deal if you already have an account open with that same site. The same is true for initial deposit bonuses. If you've already gotten your first-time bonus, you can’t get a new sign-up bonus six months down the line. It’s important to find a poker room that offers a good mix of bonuses and a solid rakeback plan.

Anyway, I was bored on the 6th and noticed I had 10k FT Points left. I played a few 1,800 point SNGs that give top 3 finishers a $26 Satellite Token. I managed to win 2 after bubbling a couple. Then I did a $24+2 90-man SNG and finished 2nd for $351 and picked up $8 in knockout bonuses ($2 per person knocked out); then I played a $24+2 45-man SNG and finished 4th for $108, pretty wild. With the $459 bankroll I 2-tabled $50nl and finished up a buyin, so in one day I was rolled for $25NL!

Biggest Loss

Pretty wild swings, but I’ll just take that as convergence after going deep in the tourneys. As you can see, I haven’t bought HM or PT3 yet, still going on PT2. After all that and getting a few bucks (~$50) transferred to my FTP account from selling some poker books, my br is now at $696 and I have $68 due in RB, so in total a $764 bankroll purely from FTP points :)

I’m aiming to run this BR up to $1k by the end of July and be grinding $50nl in August. Now that I have a job, I don’t need to cash out any of my bankroll, so moving up should be cake. Plus I feel like being on a regular schedule helps me a ton because I find I can think faster and clearer, plus I get to go outside and actually interact with RL people.

I’m also not investing into any poker stuff for now; holding off on HM/PT3, CardRunners, or Harrington on Cash Games books, until at least $50nl. I don’t how much I’ll be able to play once school starts. School and Work are my top 2 priorities right now and I won’t change that.
