The dogs of Hiroshima
barked until the very end.
One slept on the ground, in the shade.
Two pups played and chewed on each other.
One dog came when it was called.
Another sat by the side of her master.

When the great white light came
they were sent to the realm of nothingness,
the realm of atoms ripped apart,
the realm of torrential wind
and flame as hot as had ever been on earth,
even when Moses faced the burning bush.

The dogs of Hiroshima,
until the very moment of the light,
moved as dogs move, and sighed as dogs sigh.
They took upon themselves no cause,
and judged not a living soul,
but they were judged in their innocence,
and the dogs of Hiroshima were no more.

Tuesday lunchtime saw me in a basement in the bowels of Heffers bookshop in Cambridge, busy defacing my own books. Sorry, signing them. As these were for the serious collectors, I was 'signing, lining and dating' them - writing a line from the book, as well as my signature and a date. And there were a lot of them - one collector had ordered six. I hope he (and somehow I think it was a he) has a glance at the text before he puts it away in a darkened vault, or eBay, or wherever they are destined to end up. Fortunately, Richard from Heffers had chosen a variety of lines - including 'leave no tern unstoned', and 'birds, the feathered kind' (but not 'look at the tits on that!' thank God) as well as the opening sentence - so I had a little variety. And he fed me a lovely sandwich lunch, introduced me to two charming ladies from his book group and sent me off with a bottle of wine, so I'm not complaining. It was an interesting glimpse into the world of the serious book collector. A bit like the world of bird watching, perhaps?

New dictionary hopes to help redefine the world’s oldest profession
ONSIRI PRAVATTIYAGUL
While

New dictionary hopes to help redefine the world's oldest profession

ONSIRI PRAVATTIYAGUL

While most of us never challenge or even consider the role of linguistics in our daily lives, Empower, a charity offering support for sex industry workers, has braved the norm and created the Bad Girls Dictionary, in which typical meanings of words are reworked in a new light. For the creators of the new book, the real definition of a word involves "not just its meaning, but also the context in which it is used". Written in the first person, the text works to present old ideas in a new prejudice-free light.

To paint a clearer picture of the radical dictionary, let's take a look at a couple words.

Prostitute n Prefer sex worker. The name others call our profession. Politicians blaming each other for corruption and vote selling also use it, enhancing its negative association. In Thailand, the abbreviation "P" is commonly used to refer to women who have regular STD checks, and researchers use it in statistical analysis. When we hear prostitute or "P" it has the negative connotation of something underground and subversive.

Journalist n Our regular customers; our good friends and supporters; people who like making money from Empower stories; however, sometimes after a story runs, the police crack down, and the women blame Empower.

Fat adj Fat old men, etc. Many fat old men are very respectful, kind, entertaining, generous and polite customers. We're not prejudiced.

Bush Policy exp During 2003, after Bush's policy failed to make any impact on the global problems of drugs, arms and terrorism George W. Bush had a new idea. He mistakenly deduced that migrant sex workers were moved by the same channels that drugs, guns and Osama were. Therefore he used us as a scapegoat in unrelated issues.

Along with its colourful entries, the book also includes a sassy 20-FAQ section which is highly recommended for anyone interested in the sex industry. It includes questions such as, "If a customer offers to pay more money, will women agree not to use condom?"

And the given answer, "If you ask this, we understand you believe we are stupid and greedy women who will do anything for money even risk our lives. Would a paratrooper not use a parachute if offered more money?"

So now you've got the idea. There's also an entry on Thaksin, but we won't spoil the surprise.

Co-written by former sex worker and Empower coordinator Pornpit Pukmai, former nurse Liz Cameron, Empower founder Chantawipa Apisuk and designed by artist and activist Chumpon Apisuk, the Bad Girls Dictionary encompasses words that possess political, social, cultural, historical and educational aspects that directly and indirectly relate to the sex-worker industry. The entries were gathered from sex workers around the country. The dictionary aims to create understanding between two different two culturally divided groups - sex workers and non-sex workers.

"Typical dictionaries only offer definitions of words. They don't provide any attitude or thought behind them. Our dictionary wants to convey the definitions in a wider context," said Chantawipa.

"Our dictionary might be viewed as a 'peasant' text because traditionally only high class people have produced such reference material. Instead, this one is made for and by people who are regarded to be at the bottom of society. We think of it as an anthropological study," said Chumpon.

The Bad Girls Dictionary is also an opportunity for sex industry workers to tell their story, in their own words. "The right to define, create and adapt words and languages is often seen as the right of academics alone. They invent a term and push its acceptance, even though the very people it refers to wouldn't acknowledge or identify with the term in any way. [As sex workers] we have our own understanding of the vibrant living language we use in our daily lives," reads the dictionary's introduction.

The idea of the book stemmed from the frustration Pornpit often feels at conferences she regularly attends on behalf of Empower.

"When I go to conferences as a representative, I sometimes run into hurtful, misleading and incorrect interpretations of words. So I want to correct those misconceptions in our community. It's also a good way to present the realities of the injustices we are forced to face in our industry," she said.

Pornpit also recognises the power of words. She notes that by employing certain vocabularies, the authorities can instil subtle yet controlling policies that propagate prejudiced attitudes. This in turn can effect every aspect of society, including the sex industry.

"Words are sometimes constructed to rid us of our rights. For example the term "commercial sex worker, or CSW" has been translated in Thai as ying archeep piset (irregular career female), which speaks volumes about prejudicial linguistics. Unaids recognised the unfairness and committed to stop using the term in all of its communications and documents in 1997, but its usage prevails because no punishments for disobeying the directive have been defined," she said.

The book project started two years ago, and involved much communication between the writers and the sex worker communities around the country. It sparked many dialogues and called for lengthy debates over which words should be included.

"The dictionary has really been a communal effort. Many definitions were decided upon though consensus, which requires the involvement of a lot of people. It's been such a joyful process that we almost wished it didn't have to end! Words kept pouring in even after the manuscript hit the printing machine," said Cameron.

The Bad Girls Dictionary offers both Thai and English translations, but they are not literal versions of one another. Both language entries were derived independently, thus avoiding the trappings of direct translation, the writers said.

Even though the dictionary is earnest and refreshing, Chantawipa accepts that a minority audience might misinterpret it. She is, however, undaunted by the challenge.

"We're exercising our basic right of expression. It might be a subject that has traditionally been taboo, but we're confident that people will find it interesting. And we're introducing a new way of researching and reporting," she said.

Wider exposure and a general release are far from their minds since they know that regular channels of distribution will not be satisfactory for the eccentric publication.

"We're selling it by ourselves. I don't think any publisher will be sympathetic to our cause. It caters to a niche market, and we're happy to keep it within that community. If it reaches a wider audience, there is the danger that people who don't really understand the industry [but don't really oppose either] might become shocked and turn against it," said Chantawipa.

The four creators agree that if the response is strong enough, a second edition could easily eventuate, as there are many more words waiting to be explained, developed, debunked and deconstructed. There might also be a market for other occupations such as taxi driving. Another project in the pipeline is "Dear PM", a compilation of letters and petitions that Empower has submitted to the prime ministers over its 23-year history.

The creators have confessed to enjoying nothing more than adjusting people's attitudes towards sex workers, and they hope to establish a platform to develop a greater diversity of opinion through the education of society about the industry.

"I think people could be a lot more understanding and open minded if they read more books like this one. Hopefully, they'll realise that every single word uttered can profoundly affect other human beings," said Pornpit.

Yesterday was a great day. In the morning, Dan gave me a short tutorial on how to use Adobe InDesign

Yesterday was a great day. In the morning, Dan gave me a short tutorial on how to use Adobe InDesign. I had been using Microsoft Publisher for most things before. In high school, I did the layout for the newspaper with Publisher for two years. I caught on very quickly to InDesign. I practiced setting up pages with text and photos whenever I had free time during the day. Now that I have a basic understanding of the program, JRN 302 should be a breeze (in JRN 302 you learn to use InDesign).

I completed my article about Pridgeon and submitted it to Dan. He read it over and said it was good and pointed out a few changes that I could make. He told me that he wasn't going to tell me exactly what to put because he "didn't want to take away my voice." He said the article would be perfect if we were going to be printing it that day, but since it is for a publication he said we can perfect it even more. I thought this was great because I am able to learn to correct my own mistakes and perfect my own words. I know that I am a fairly good writer, but I want to become even better. I can already see that this internship is going to help me do that.

So I went back through the Pridgeon feature. I re-worked the lead and discussed it with Dan. The lead seemed to be the hardest part for me. Dan told me to imagine I was telling the story to my brother...how would I start it? I wouldn't start by just bluntly telling the important details. I would first intrigue my audience to get them into the story. I re-worked the rest of the article and sent it back to Dan.

Dan sent two stories about a coach and asked me to edit them into one for the Viewpoint. It wasn't a difficult task, although the fact that I know nothing about sports was a little intimidating. Luckily, the "complicated sports stuff" didn't need editing. I sent it back to him and he said it was fine and he just moved a few little things around.

At the end of the day, Dan said that I would get more stories to write soon and other things to work on. I also will be starting work on CMU Welcomes You soon.

Lesson of the Day: Write like you're telling a story to someone to their face. Intrigue them and draw them in.

Plan UK recently launched a handbook on Community Led Total Sanitation to enable communities analyse

Plan UK recently launched a handbook on Community Led Total Sanitation to enable communities analyse their sanitation conditions and collectively understand the impact of open defecation on public health and their environment.

About Community Led Total Sanitation Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) is an approach that focuses on igniting a change in sanitation behaviour through community participation rather than constructing toilets. It does this through a process of social participation. It concentrates on the whole community rather than on individual behaviours and the collective benefit from stopping open defecation can encourage a more cooperative approach. People decide together how they will create a clean and hygienic environment that benefits everyone.

Lock ‘N Load Games just released the latest edition of their house PDF-magazine, Line of Fire

Lock 'N Load Games just released the latest edition of their house PDF-magazine, Line of Fire #2. They did not quite make the quarterly deadline but close enough. LNL is selling Line of Fire #2 for a couple dollars cheaper ($14.99) than Line of Fire #1 but the issue is a bit shorter than the first.

Line of Fire issue 2 is a 55 page PDF. It is in full, high-quality color. The PDF is smaller than Issue 1 but still sizeable at 47MB. The various maps and counters included still print well so I am not sure what accounts for the reduction in file size. The issue has 13 pages of previews on upcoming LNL games; three pages on Lock 'n Load tactics; a two-page interview; a two-page battle report for An Island War Deluxe; a nice three-page look at Bundeswehr forces in World at War followed by a three-page battle report of the Wittman's Ghost scenario from Death of the First Panzer; two more pages for an article on converting WaW for miniatures; another two-page interview with Jim Snyder, designer of the upcoming Blood and Bridges WaW module; a two-page look at Somali forces in the upcoming A Day of Heroes Lock 'N Load game followed by a three-page scenario walk through from that game; and lastly five scenarios, for current games, with maps and counters.

The interview with Corey Konieczkain, the designer of Fantasy Flight Games' Tide of Iron game, is a bit of a twist as there is no relationship between FFG or ToI and LnL that we know about. It would be nice to see more of this type of thing in future issues. The most interesting piece of information from the interview is that there does not seem to be another expansion for ToI in the works. Although, Corey does not rule out doing one but it certainly will not appear in 2008.

There are a few things to note on the scenarios. The Brecourt Manor scenario has been available for awhile now but perhaps there is a tweak to it I did not notice. Counters for an M60A3 company are provided for the The Death of the 1st Panzer Division scenario. This is a nice addition for homemade scenarios. Lastly, the The Road to Armageddon scenario for WaW includes both a map and counters for a Syrian vs Israel battle.

As with the premier issue, the layout and article content is excellent and the scenarios and included maps and counters are also well done. There still seems to be too much material on upcoming titles. If you are paying this much for a publication you do not want to be paying for what is essentially advertising. As before, if you only play certain games then the useful content can be slim. I still found the articles on the games I do not play interesting although I continue to think $9.95 would be a more reasonable price.

Overall it is a good issue and has a bit more focus than the premier issue. If you enjoy Lock 'n Load's games, specifically Lock 'n Load and World at War for this issue, you should give it a look.

Yesterday was my second day of my internship. In the morning, I refined my interview questions and did a little brainstorming for CMU Welcomes You. I also worked on what little bit of the article I could, using information from a press release.

I also used Facebook to find people that are minoring in event management. Using the directory, I called one girl that sounded like a good interview prospect and left a message.

I interviewed Paul around 1 p.m. I had over 20 questions prepared, but afterwards I felt like I still didn't have enough. But, I started typing my information and I had plenty! I worked on writing the article for quite awhile and then I spent a lot of time proofreading it. I proofread it over and over until I could read through it without wanting to change something.

Later in the day, I finally spoke with the girl I had chosen to interview about event management. I had chosen her because, one, her Facebook account looked decent (I was surprised at how many students had no privacy settings and had undesirable things shown), and two, she was in Mt. Pleasant still. I was hoping to find someone in Mt. Pleasant because then the photographer could get a few shots of her if we needed them. While talking to her on the phone, I found out that she had decided not to sign the minor so she could graduate earlier.

So back on Facebook I went, looking for another event management student. I sent several emails to some and called the ones that had phone numbers available.

Finally, I found one that looked perfect. She called me this morning and she is a signed minor. So now, all I have to do is put her information and comment in my article and I am finished with that feature.

The feature is due Thursday, 9 a.m., but it will be in before that. Dan also said that next week he will give me a short tutorial in Adobe InDesign so I can play with it when I have time. I have experience with other design programs, so once I learn the tools of this program I should be good to go!

Lesson of the Day: Have a back-up plan. I thought one girl was perfect for the interview, so I didn't line up others until near the end off the day when I found out she wasn't a signed minor.
