"A good geothermal energy source has three basic requirements: a high thermal gradient—which means accessible hot rock—plus a rechargeable reservoir fluid, usually water, and finally, deep permeable pathways for the fluid to circulate through the hot rock," says Mack Kennedy. "We believe we have found a way to map and quantify zones of permeability deep in the lower crust that result not from volcanic activity but from tectonic activity, the movement of pieces of the Earth's crust."

Geothermal is considered by many to be the best renewable energy source besides solar. Accessible geothermal energy in the United States, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, is estimated at 90 quadrillion kilowatt-hours, 3,000 times more than the country's total annual energy consumption. Determining helium ratios from surface measurements is a practical way to locate promising sources.

Filter murky or colored water through clean cloths or allow it to settle. It is better to both settle and filter.
Boiling is the surest method to make water safe to drink and kill disease-causing microorganisms like Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium, which are frequently found in rivers and lakes.
To improve the flat taste of boiled water, aerate it by pouring it back and forth from one container to another and allow it to stand for a few hours, or add a pinch of salt for each quart or liter of water boiled.
When boiling is not practical, certain chemicals will kill most harmful or disease-causing organisms. Chlorine (in the form of unscented bleach) and iodine are the two chemicals commonly used to treat water.
You can use a non-scented, household chlorine bleach that contains a chlorine compound to disinfect water. (Remember, 1/8 teaspoon and 8 drops are about the same quantity.)
You can use tincture of iodine to disinfect filtered and settled water. Common household iodine from the medicine chest or first aid kit may be used to disinfect water.
Tincture of iodine. For cloudy water add ten drops and let the solution stand for at least 30 minutes.

The social impact :

People often tend to talk exclusively about the measurable and visible consequences of the greenhouse effect. However, the political and social consequences will be equally far-reaching.

Firstly, it is a problem which cannot be solved by one country or one government. Climate change is a global phenomenon, which is all the more complex because its effects are different for each and every country. It is almost certain that specific countries will benefit from a climate change, while numerous others will only lose by it. The first group will be far less inclined to tackle the problem than the second. Differences are bound to occur among the losers, too: some will dispose of the money or the means to minimise the impact if not avoid it altogether, others will not...

Secondly, climate change, together with other environmental issues and the phenomenon of the overpopulation, will most probably cause poverty and hunger to increase globally. That will result in an ever stronger tendency of entire populations to migrate to places where there is no hunger and poverty.

Thirdly, there is the present conflict between Northern and Southern nations, which will be accentuated. For now the problem is compounded by the question who has the right to dispose of how much of the fresh water and of the agricultural land.

However, even within one single society on its own climate change will cause problems and material for conflicts. Thus, the health care system will have to adapt to different environmental factors, as will agriculture. Industry and households, too, will need to learn to use water differently - something that cannot be achieved if we do not change our attitude. The risk of floods becomes bigger, as well as the chance of long periods of drought, so that major infrastructural works will need to be carried out. Such works usually entail huge price tags. In some way or other we shall have to think of a solution for all those problems.

World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD),

Today, 17 June, is World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD), and this year's theme is Combating Land Degradation for Sustainable Agriculture. On this important occasion, the Global Mechanism (GM) has decided to celebrate by delivering a special message to its constituencies, drawing attention to the potential of the UNCCD as the main policy forum that matches food security, climate resilience and rural development through sustainable land management (SLM). Land management is all about management of natural resources such as soil, water and vegetation. The High Level Conference on World Food Security: the Challenges of Climate Change and Biodiversity, held at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, Italy, 3-5 June 2008, was a recent highlight in the debate on investments in agriculture, community forestry, water management and rural development. The current strategy and policy debates around climate resilience, sustainable agriculture and food security, point to the conclusion that none of these global challenges and threats to human well-being should be tackled in isolation. Instead, they should be seen as part of national development programming at country level - supported by effective international policy making processes and new financial mechanisms. The UNCCD finds itself at the interface of highly dynamic policy processes, where innovative and forward-looking interactions offer enormous potential for the Convention. The GM supports developing countries in closing the considerable knowledge gap on financial opportunities of the emerging ,climate change finance regime. The global warming controversy is a dispute regarding the nature and consequences of global warming. The disputed issues include the causes of increased global average air temperature , especially since the mid-20th century, whether this warming trend is unprecedented or within normal climatic variations, and whether the increase is wholly or partially an artifact of poor measurements. Additional disputes concern estimates of climate sensitivity, predictions of additional warming, what the consequences are, and what action should be taken (if any). Individuals, corporations, and political organizations are involved, so the debate is vigorous in the popular media and on a policy level.

The earth has warmed up by about 0.6ºC in the last 100 years. Attribution of recent climate change is the effort to scientifically ascertain mechanisms responsible for relatively recent changes observed in the Earth's climate. En réalité, nous ne le savons pas. Nous savons en revanche très bien ce qu'il n'est pas : à savoir, la poursuite des grandes tendances de nos modes de production et de consommation. Compte tenu du taux annuel d'augmentation de notre consommation d'énergie d'origine fossile de 2 %, dans vingt ans environ nous aurons doublé notre consommation d'énergie et pris un risque climatique considérable. Poursuivre le rythme actuel de destruction des espèces revient à compromettre l'évolution du vivant pour les cinq à dix millions d'années à venir, etc.

Que faire alors ?

Il existe de nombreuses pistes pour tenter de concilier les trois exigences du développement durable : les durabilités écologique et sociale et la rentabilité économique. Les Etats et les entreprises ont à cet égard leurs responsabilités propres, mais également les citoyens. Ce qu'ils sont souvent enclins à oublier ou à ne pas vouloir voir. Les Français, par exemple, notent leur comportement environnemental entre 8 et 9 sur une échelle de 1 à 10. Ils sont encore persuadés que les problèmes sont plutôt ailleurs et pour demain et qu'ils ne relèvent pas de leur fait.

Or, c'est loin d'être le cas. Le rôle des consommateurs est même à bien des égards considérable. En premier lieu, on est en droit d'exiger d'eux, et donc de chacun de nous, un minimum de cohérence et d'attention à la transversalité du développement durable. On ne peut, par exemple, acheter systématiquement les denrées alimentaires les moins chères et fustiger en même temps les farines animales et la vache folle. On ne peut non plus rechercher systématiquement les carburants les moins chers et se scandaliser des marées noires, la faiblesse des coûts se reportant sur toute la chaîne, à commencer par le soin apporté à la qualité et à l'entretien des navires, etc. En outre, de même qu'il convient d'encourager pour les productions artisanales et agricoles des pays tiers le commerce équitable, il convient pour les biens ou services d'encourager les entreprises qui s'engagent authentiquement sur la voie du développement durable.
