World star Rain kicked off his singing career in Korea after a 2-year hiatus by appearing late Thursday for the filming of his comeback special. After he released his fourth album in 2006, he has concentrated on his acting career, appearing in the Hollywood blockbuster “Speed Racer” and starring in “Ninja Assassin” slated for release in 2009. But even while shaping his acting career, Rain has steadily worked on his fifth album, the first product since his departure from his mentor and producer Park Jin-young.

Rain’s fifth album “Rainism” showcases a wide range of his abilities. During the filming of his comeback special at the MBC Open Hall in Ilsan on the outskirts of Seoul, 1,000 of his fans gathered to see how far Korea’s hottest entertainer has evolved over the years. He has written songs and closely participated in all the phases of its production. In addition to his signature power dance, he showed that he had a comic touch in “Fresh Woman” in which he was dressed up in workout clothes and a fuzzy wig. The audience went wild at his funny expressions and comments.

Actress Kim Sun-ah of “My Name is Kim Samsoon” fame made a surprise visit to the stage during Rain’s performance of “Bad Man.” Dressed in a skimpy dress, Kim danced a sultry number with Rain to the envy of his fans. Rain’s special will be aired in two parts – a documentary and a comeback concert. His much anticipated fifth album will go on sale on October 15th.

Those Dancing Days - Home Sweet Home
A close-run week, as here's another excellent grower of a single from my favourite teenage indie-popstrels. I think I've run out of superlatives for this lot. There's an almost impossibly charming breathlessness about the chorus here. And they interview brilliantly.

Boyzone – Love You Anyway
What's this doing here? A massive great hunk of mild cheddar, shamelessly taking exactly the same approach to their comeback as Take That did. Look though, it's Ronan Keating, and the cutesy one, and him off of Corrie, and... well, mainly Ronan Keating, to be honest. And the song's actually quite good, in a broadway sort of way. Although I've just envisaged it's eventual use on an advert for bread, or loo roll, or whatever. It will happen.

Pink – So What
This is evidently the week they've been saving up all the good mainstream pop for, then. Even if Pink seems to be channeling Fat Les during the verse, this is another good song. Especially that synth in the chorus. Yeah.

The Streets – Everything Is Borrowed
Oh, you're so perceptive, Mike! This is basically a soppier take on 'Empty Cans', with added so-called social commentary. It's not awful, but just listen to the majestic original instead.

Crystal Castles – Crimewave
As usual, sounds like it was recorded on an underwater Game Boy. There's a fine line between dark/"deep"/quirky and just a bit aimless/meandering/tuneless. This one sits a bit too close to the latter category. Shame, as they can be quite engaging.

Sara Bareilles - Bottle It Up
I'm actually frightened by the fact that I quite like this slice of schmaltz. Where is my music taste heading? Wikipedia suggests that Ms. Bareilles has supported: Maroon 5, Paulo Nutini, James BLUNT, COUNTING CROWS, I could go on. She's like the ringmaster of the musical AXIS OF FUCKING EVIL or something. There are worrying times ahead...

Saint Etienne – Burnt Out Car (Xenomania Mix)
One of my favourite tracks from one of my favourite bands. Remixed by the best pop producers around, to celebrate an outstanding 'best of' collection. It should be perfection. Yet, strangely, it isn't. It certainly doesn't add anything to the original, and the jury's still out as to whether it's actually taken away some of the charm. Still streets ahead of most pop singles released in 2008 though, and criminally ignored by the radio.

Innerpartysystem - Die Tonight Live Forever
Certainly the best thing I've heard from a Kerrang!-endorsed band in a while, probably because it takes some cues from good dance music, and stays well away from barking aggression. Not a million miles away from the Cut Copys of this world, if I'm totally honest. Pretty good.

Sam Isaac - Sticker Star And Tape
A young singer-songwriter who skips the usual acknowledged classics and shamelessly acknowledges contemporaries such as the Spinto Band (see last week) and the Shout Out Louds as influences. The appropriation of their sound is pretty shameless too, but it makes for enjoyable, exuberant stuff.

White Lies – Death
Slighly glum Editors-esque stuff, on the surface, but with a bit of a slow build quality that suggests there might be a little bit more to this lot.

Yo Majesty – Club Action
Evidently indebted to old-skool 80s electro/hip-hop, this female-fronted trio still bring a bit of liveliness to the mix that's generally missing these days.
