Today launches the official Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City...the fashion capital of the world! It's an opportunity for elite designers to showcase their "haute" 2009 Spring collections. So grab your most stylish pumps and pair it with something snazzy because New York Fashion Week=Photographers EVERYWHERE. Work it, work it.....

A couple months ago I shot a fashion show in California. The best way to describe the show is in the words of designer Christian Siriano, FIERCE! Models strutted down the runway showing off designs by Kenneth Cole, BCBG Max Azria, Armani, and Bebe. Additionally, Saks Fifth Avenue displayed some of their best in-store collections. What works of art. I love fashion and each new season I am consistently amazed at the products produced by designers. As the show came to an end, I grabbed one last shot that would fill my SanDisk card...the one I posted above. Artsy, but still neat.

As the media surrounds us with the 2008 presidential election, I can only ask you to vote on one thing... Vote YES to fashion!

Read on and see what I mean.

First up is Zin Kato.  In reviewing these shows, it is sometimes hard to remember that these are spring/summer collections that we are looking at.  Designer Toru Kato gently reminds us of the beautiful colors in nature; a babbling brook of cool water, rose gardens, and the fragrant smell of blossoming trees.

The first thing that struck me with the matohu collection, was that there is a model featured with meat on her bones.  Also, do you see the strong eyebrows?  It looks like this trend too, will continue into 09'.  As for the collection itself, I think I most appreciate the color and lightness of the jackets and the movement in print on the dresses.

Ok, first of all you have to remember that this is an installation. Think of it more as performance art.  That being said, the mannequin below looks like she had way too much to drink at her birthday party and was sent home haphazardly on her pony.  It's just hysterical. 

Secondly, I really cannot tell you whether or not this first model is a man or woman.  Maybe that is the intent of the designer.

And how about those wedding/1st Communion veils topped with party hats?  Notice also that the plus size child model is missing her shoe.  That must be some kind of party!

Those of you who went to prom either in the southern U.S. or circa 1979 may remember those hoop dresses all the girls wore.  The plum gown below is strikingly reminiscent of those designs.  I think it would be perfect for high school seniors in 09'.  It certainly is a much better choice than the skimpy dresses the 16 year olds have been wearing.  (And just for the record, I was in elementary school in 1979.)

Do you see the second picture?  Are my eyes deceiving me, or does that look like a woman over 30?  Kudos to Masahiko Saito and matahou for using models who are outside the European norm.

So here are the hot guys I promised you at the top of this post.  I think the styles the guys are wearing are really cool and different.  Yes, the first model is wearing a pair of pants that slightly resemble a pair of parachute pant jodhpurs, but with the tuxedo jacket, it looks modern and fresh.

This couple looks like they just finished making love and don't care if the world knows it.

Once again, a notch collared jacket in this different variation will be a spring staple.  I also appreciate the tummy concealing flap at the top of this long skirt, not to mention the corresponding boots.

I also see that ombre is not lost for spring 09' with the fantastic blue and white shorts worn below.

I was really excited by Gut's Dynamite Cabarets' collection.  Namely because I appreciated their updated take on eighties street style.  If you remember my Back To School post, I suggested adorning your jean jacket with mini rock band pins.  Now you too can be a season ahead of everyone else with these little "old school" gems.  

Also notice, many of the trends for fall 08' (i.e. plaid) will remain.  I am making a fashion prediction that combat boots will go mainstream again.  Pull out your white out and start painting them! 

Finally, if anyone from GDC wants to send me that jacket and hat, I guarantee that I will rock it year round.  I LOVE IT!

This too is an installation for Japan FW.  I don't have much to say other than I like the cosmic print used in the first selection and the beekeeper's outfit has the makings of a very cute dress.

Hard and soft seems the best way to describe G.V.G.V.  The zippers in the pants below would look great on a long waisted woman with an hourglass figure.  Then you have a bit of the soft with the lace stockings and ruffles in the second selection.  Combined, this makes for a very sexy collection.

"I chose to showcase designers Thera Taurog and Fuscia Jewell in my annual Fall runway show because their designs are so perfectly suited for Autumn colors and themes. Lady Thera designs are literally wearable art. Thera has brought the works of the greatest artists' of all time into SL and worked them into fabulous dress designs. Her designs are elegant but fun and excellently executed, easily one of the best and most daring designers in SL. I have wanted to showcase her designs in one of my runway productions since the first time I saw her work. So, this show is very exciting for me," said Calamity Hathaway, runway show director of CH Enterprises. 

"Petal Meg jewelry is perfect all year round, but especially for Fall. Her lovely flower creations imported from RL to SL are unlike no others, Fuscia's designs are unique. I have featured her jewelry in other runway shows, and I’m very happy to showcase her designs in the Art of Autumn fashion show," she said.

L.A. Fashion Week heats up with a new set of shows 

First up are the decidedly strong shoulders from designer Akira Naka.  For women who have the weight of the world to balance, this collection calls to mind a certain eighties business suit jacket look.

Of all of Tuesday's collections available for review, I would have to say that support surface was my favorite.  We have fall 2008's "it" pants back for an encore and a really lovely modern interpretation of the bold shoulder.  I would feel much more comfortable wearing this sort of shape than a set of linebacker shoulder pads as seen in the above collection from AKIRA NAKA.  One thing is for sure, invest in a great pair of oxford shoes!

Like mintdesigns yesterday, HISUI seems to have been inspired by skeletal features.  Is it a commentary on the pressure to be thin?  I'm not really sure, but the first dress in this collection also brings a fish like skeleton to mind.

Oh Né-net, what can I say?  All I could think of was what would Michael Kors say if this came down the runway for him to judge?  Look number two looks like a modern day Depression Era costume (hmm, intentional?) and just in case we didn't get it, Raggedy Ann and Andy are holding effigies of themselves.

Aguri Sagimori had some very interesting uses of the ruffle, which seems to be a popular trend.  I especially liked the white blouse below with the tuxedo-like tail.  That sort of tail was very popular in the mid to late eighties.

Slightly similar to motonari ono yesterday, Kamishima Chinami has its own interpretation of the ruff and an intriguing take on the popular bold shoulder.  It's a really lovely collection.

Finally! There's no need to wonder what you and your man will be wearing on your next date night.  Take a little inspiration from the sexy punk collection by designer Ato Matsumoto.

Designers Hokuto Katsui and Nao Yagi from mintdesigns, embodied the spirit of spring with a runway lined with umbrellas while models wore creative interpretations of the spring staple; the raincoat.  Instead of the traditional rain hat, the ladies were topped with a curious choice of animal bones.  One thing that was consistently cute, were the fantastic rain boots.  Not too high and well paired with a pair of striped socks.

Mikio Sakabe seems to have taking inspiration from the 60's through the 80's with the platinum wigs, large bows and futuristic silver hues.

I have to say that my favorite from Takumi Hatakeyama's collection is the burnt orange bell sleeve dress.  The shape of the sleeves and cut of this dress makes this creation so wearable and chic!

After not appearing in at Tokyo's Fall Fashion Week, I was so exited to see mercibeaucoup in this spring's lineup.  I always love the creative spirit conveyed in Eri Utsugi's designs her fantastic use of color.  If only I could get away with wearing that adorable striped stocking confection or those fantastic tights with the little balls on them.  Alas, this old broad would look a wee bit silly.  One other thing to note, it appears that the maxi dress will still have it's place in next spring's wardrobe.  So, don't cast yours aside yet.

This collection by Motonari Ono recalls a strong influence from Queen Elizabeth's reign with the high ruffs, rich embroidery, and the modern interpretation of "trunk hose" once worn by men.  I think it's just beautiful.

Designer Ritsuko Shirahama appears to be enamored with the bombasted hose as well, as seen below in green.  The three tiered skirt is also quite lovely, but may not be that easy to walk in.  I would also be remiss in not mentioning the eighties inspired high and side ponytail.  If you are old enough to have worn this once, be well advised to keep your pony rear-facing.

Finally, fur fur's collection seems to have a very strong nature and earth goddess point-of-view.
