The costumes were amazing - some of them are worth more than NZ$10,000 - that's amazing considering the amount of use they are going to get. I suspect some of the cost of that is in the special fabrics, the non-slip ones for some of those throws. There weren't too many un-planned sitdowns in the show.  Just one I spotted and one hand on the ice.

I was fascinated with how they get an ice stage so quickly. The start the stage off with bags of crushed ice and spray it every 15 mins or so till eventually they have 3 inches of ice.  They keep the stage at minus 15 degrees.  On the way in there were notices to keep your coats with you, but sitting way up high we were still pretty toasty. I think it might have been a little cooler down the bottom. You can check out a video of how it is done. Note the swishing ice skating sound if you use the drop down menus on their site.

Well, I do not think Bin Laden was technically a direct recruit of the CIA or an employee.

I understand he went to Afghanistan on his own to fight the Russians, for their invasion of a Muslim land. US said he is a good man for feeling that way.

The CIA and the US Govt. were busy actually promoting the word JIHAD in Muslim countries like Pakistan so uneducated masses could be exhorted to volunteer to go into battle against Russians, many times knowing they would be suicide missions. So, Bin Laden was a Godsend to the CIA and they worked well together. Training and resources were surely provided to him.

Of course, now we are paying the price. We said he was a hero when he wanted outside armies out of Muslim lands like Afghanistan. When he said OK, now American armies out of Saudi Arabia (his actual home country)Blair and Bush started talking as if this is some ideology from 1000 years ago. Now, last time I checked 1979 was not 1000 yers ago when the US Govt. and CIA created the JIHADI soldier.

The Russians are probably laughing at us every day we get mad dogs we trained biting at us around the world now.

Occasionally however, these polls in Russian newspapers provide an interesting look at what the average Russian is thinking about certain issues, although I wouldn't necessarily take these unscientific polls too seriously.

Today on the website for the business newspaper "Vzglyad," the poll question was "How should Russia punish the Czech Republic for the installation of the radar station for the Missile Shield."

Out of the seven options I voted "Beat them in Soccer." This is how it broke up among the 1,491 Russian respondents:

28.2% - "Aim nuclear missiles at Prague"

19.9% - "No punishment. It's the Czech Republic's internal business"

16.8% - "Boycott of Czech beer"

16.3% - "Reduce oil exports to the Czech Republic"

8.7% - "Send tanks to the Czech Republic" (. . . again)

7.0% - "Beat them in Soccer"

3.1% - "Break diplomatic ties"

A lot can be said about the results, but once again I don't think it should be taken too seriously. I think a good portion of the respondents were joking, but wanted to express their displeasure towards the Missile Shield. Having been in Russia and talked to people about these issues, I was actually surprised that the second most popular response was ambivalence.

Russian Shawls: a long evolution

Today, shawls don't satisfy themselves any more with their utilitarian aspect.
Thanks to the techniques evolutions and the aesthetic customers requirements, Russian Shawls became a necessary accessory of mode.

In the 18th century, the cashmere shawls invaded Europe and as in many other countries, Russia started to produce shawls, taking as a starting point the Cashmere production.

The specific Cashmere techniques not being directly usable, the Russians developed their own manufacturing processes, changed the matters, and developed a typically Slave style.

The specificity of the Russian Shawls

Rather than the goat down, non available in sufficient quantity, the Russian Shawls were manufactured out of combed sheep wool.
After treatments intended to improve its softness, elasticity and durability, the result was a very solid, very colourful fabric with a really pleasant touch.

the Indians shawls had their designs embroidered by hand, which did not allow a great production.
The Russians thus introduced techniques of weaving close to the Gobelins tapestries to manufacture their shawls in great quantity, while producing an excellent quality.

After many researches and evolutions, the designs of the Russian's shawls stabilized themselves in the form of an empty center of dark and sharp color, surrounded by a thick garland of very coloured floral decorations, the whole superbly emphasized by an arabesque of fringes out of wool, or even out of silk.

The result is splendid, and the success of these shawls has remained constant for more than three centuries. The women adore them and the men know that it is a gift always appreciated by their partners.

Russia issued an ultimatum to the United States today.

In political terms it was an ultimatum but in blunt terms it was a threat.

If we deploy a missile defensive system in either Poland or the Czech Republic, Russia stated unequivocally that they will respond with a "military-technological" response. They followed that by expressing regret that they would have to do this but they made it clear they would have no choice and that the consequences would not be of their doing.

Ominous words indeed.

Exactly what this "military-technological" response is anyone's guess but let us speculate for a minute...

• We say we are looking to defend against a potential missile strike from Iran.
• Russia sees us placing missiles on their doorstep, the former lands of the Soviet Empire (or Eastern Bloc) as we once referred to it. They say, this appears as a threat.
• They say this is unnecessary by us and a potential deterrent to their own missiles, be they defensive or offensive their meaning is not clear.
• Perhaps they view these missiles as a deterrent to their offensive capability and therefore upsetting the strategic balance of the Mutual Assured Destruction doctrine (MAD) long clung to by past generations of Cold War Russian-American leaders since the 1950's.

If this is how the Russian's are thinking, then they will probably react according to that belief.

If they see us threatening their strike capability in what was once their former satellite, they in turn will do the same to us.

What course of action could the Russians take to mirror our own?

They could potentially consider placing a similar series of missiles bordering our own country.

Where might that be? It would have to be friends of Russia, so Cuba or Venezuela come to mind as potential spots for these missiles.

Their governments are not in the least bit friendly with us and might not have any concerns about allowing the Russians to place such missiles within their borders.

If we continue our current course of action, we will find out soon enough.

UPDATE: Today  (Wednesday) Iran test fired a 1200 mile range missile capable of reaching American forces in the Middle East and Israel. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard commented that they had their fingers "on the trigger" should they need to strike at an aggressor. The timing of the test couldn't be worse for the Russians, coming so closely behind their threat. The missile test plus bellicose words from the Guard quickly countered their claim that the Iranians were no threat.

Said Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice - "I see it as evidence that the missile threat is not an imaginary one and that those who say that there is no Iranian missile threat against which we should be building missile defenses perhaps ought to talk to the Iranians."

Wow, no wonder she is Secretary of State. That has to be one of the longest run on sentences ever made by a high level politician!

Barack Obama is probably right when he laments that it is the mind-set in this establishment that has perpetuated such an arrogant foreign policy. And I am not just talking about the political establishment but the media that talks like a super-power. If this is the way we conduct ourselves, dealing with friends and foes alike, we would be completely isolated. Nobody cares about our opinion in any case. Everyone seems to be freelancing. The world becomes unstable and dangerous in the meantime.

Why should Iran not feel threatened? After what the United States, Great Britain and the Russians have done to that country, during the last 100 years or more. Iran is the inheritor of the Great Persian Civilization, once a superpower in its own right. The total population of Iran is upward of 70 million people. Two thirds of the population is under twenty five years old. The country and its people have great potential. They are just going through a bad patch. Their political leadership is not exactly friendly to the world. Did we not have a Richard Nixon for a while? Do you think Nixon was more rational than Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? Ask anyone in India!

When my division moved to a new fancy campus a couple of years ago, the smokers were given their own little smoking section away from the building entrance. I laughed when I first saw it and quickly dubbed it the "Smokers' Circle of Shame" (technically it was a semi-circle, but everyone got my point). Situated amidst the beautifully manicured lawn, right outside the windows of the cafeteria, was a dirt-covered area that was the smoker's ghetto. Despite the ample open space on the campus, that the only place they could go to smoke. Being located right outside of the cafeteria, it was almost as if they were on display for us. And being that there isn't much else on the campus that is entertaining, watching and identifying the cliques of smokers amused me.

Rarely was a smoker there by him or herself. Well, there was Al, but he always brought his work along as a companion. But otherwise, it was mostly groups of smokers. They seem to cluster according to nationality and gender. Often you find a group of Indian men (never women), which is not surprising as I would guesstimate that at least 30-40% of the employees and contractors are Indian. I never really noticed if it was the same guys every time, but when they were there, there was always at least 3 or 4 at a time. And then there were that one application team, mixed race, but native born Americans, that were always together, whether it was smoking, grabbing some coffee in the break room, or eating lunch.

But, the reigning queens of the Smokers' Circle of Shame were the Russian women. They not only had the largest group of smokers, but they occupied the space for the most time. They are a very imposing group. Truth be told, they scare me. Obviously, they fear nothing, especially not being fired. "Verk? No, ve vill smoke and you geeve us paycheck, yes?" Nor do they fear the Fashion Police. It's really difficult to describe their fashion sense. It's somewhere between the Studio 54 and Nashville. I'm also guessing that the clothing sizes in Russian are a mere size or two different from ours as their clothes seem at least one size too small, and there is always a hint of flesh that is trying to burst free. But, the worst part is getting stuck in an elevator with them after one of their smoking breaks. Whether talking on their matching pink Razor phones or to each other in that small space, the heavy smell of smoke is overwhelming.

So, with the new company policy of no smoking ANYWHERE on company property, I wonder what will happen to the various smoking teams. Maybe some will decide to quit smoking. But I'm guessing most of them will probably be compliant and simply walk the 15 or so yards over to the field behind our parking lot. But, not the Russian women. I bet they'll find a secret spot some place else on campus, steal some chairs from the cafeteria and carry on as before, because they're bad ass like that. And I kinda admire them for it.

Another English poem (so to say) describing a moment of intense remembrance. It is not a love remembrance, it is to be noted, plus I know that the Volga region is not in Asia but in Europe. The person remembered was though clearly Asiatic in her origin and Mongolian in her features, Russia being somewhat halfway between Europe and Asia.
