Pour 8 personnes

Ingrédients
. 300 g de scarole
. 200 g de frisée
. 200 g de trévise
. 500 g de concombre
. 500 g de courgette
. 1 kg de carottes
. 300 g de navets longs
. 2 kg de tomates
. 5 cl d’huile d’olive
. 125 g d’échalotes
. 1 bouquet garni

Vinaigrette
. 1 mangue bien mûre pelée
. 1 cuillère à soupe de vinaigre de vin rouge
. Le jus d’un citron
. 5 à 6 cs d’huile de tournesol
. 1 cs de persil haché très fin

Assaisonnement
. sel fin
. poivre du moulin

Décor
. 1 petite botte d’oignons verts

Préparation
Effeuiller et laver soigneusement les salades (réserver au frais).
Laver les concombres et courgettes.
Eplucher les carottes et navets.
Tailler en longue julienne (12cm) les carottes, concombres, navets, courgettes.
Cuire les juliennes croquantes à la vapeur.
Rafraîchir rapidement dans l’eau glacée.

Coulis de tomates fraîches
Monder, éplucher, concasser les tomates.
Faire suer les échalotes ciselées.
Ajouter la tomate concassée, bouquet : cuire à découvert.
Assaisonner, passer rapidement au mixeur.

Vinaigrette de mangue
Enlever le noyau de la mangue.
Mettre la chair de la mangue dans un mixeur avec le sel, le poivre, le vinaigre et le jus de citron.
Vous obtenez un mélange lisse.
Ajouter petit à petit l’huile jusqu’à ce quelle soit complètement absorbée.
Le mélange devient épais et lisse.
Ajouter persil finement ciselé.

Dressage
Sur fond de salade harmonieusement disposée, disposer au centre la julienne assaisonnée.
Entourer d’un cordon de coulis de tomates.
Parsemer d’oignons verts ciselés.
Arroser de vinaigrette à la mangue.

here's the unfunny stuff on the election 08: 

artisan politics is way over my head these days.   seems so cut and  
dried to me that an ouster of the GOP is a no-brainer and a cinch with  
obama, who has the skills and the savvy to pick a running mate who  
makes up for his paucity of foreign relations experience. now i'm  
hearing 'not so fast.' holy christ on a bicycle.

even at this age, i'm  still shocked by my parochialism when it comes  
to electoral politics.  i  misread people's political leanings quite  
often and get myself into awkward conversations as a result.

here's what i mean: the other night on my shift at a small bookshop, a  
young guy came in with  his wife and toddler looking for a biography  
of andrew jackson or anything about american history published by  
'time/life.'   the guy seemed rational, reasonable, likable. we didn't  
have the jackson bio or anything by time/life, so i pulled out alexis  
de tocqueville's 'democracy in america' instead:

the guy:  'hey, i'm a republican.'
me: nonplussed. long pause.  'you're kidding right?' ( the  
misconception indicated by his response to the book title took me by  
surprise so i decided to ignore it;  in the 2 second gap  i realized i  
wasn't sure how to address this mistake without the risk of an insult.)
guy: "no i'm  not kidding. i work hard for my money. there's too many  
freeloaders who work the system.'
me: (because i can't understand this mental equivalent between working  
hard and republicanism, i try to shift things to current events) 'how  
bout mccain's choice for VP? it worries me that he's already 72 and if  
he died soon, she will be the head honcho.'
guy: 'yeah, but i like her.'

this kind of 'out of sync' experience represents how i've felt all my  
life about the outcome of general elections. i just don't get it.

evidently, the  tactical masterminds who dug up this wing nut (sorry)  
palin believe she represents a soothing semaphore. i assumed (myopia?)  
that many would find her a total turn-off,   (*hate* the updo, the  
inexperience, the cletus persona, just for starters).

now i'm hearing that the repubs go by a sophisticated  marketing  
playbook that few on the outside can follow. this way of running  
elections has transmogrified the entire framework of electoral  
politics into something so deeply wicked and cynical, i don't know if  
i blame the people who finally decide to opt out.

is there an end to such tactics? is  american democracy a losing  
proposition because some people are just too smart?

 the possibility of a republican  
victory... is it really plausible?

I know one of the bloggs I read is a little down hope it's nothing serious.

But what about everyone else is nobody doing anything of note worth blogging about?

Och efter det har det varit fritt fram!  Hela jaktdrevet (d.v.s. hela Sveriges journalistkår med ett fåtal undantag) har satt sig till häst och börjat tuta i lurarna. (Hets-) jakten har börjat!!! Jag har för mig att jag läst någonstans att en journalist objektivt och sakligt skall redogöra för händelser och nyheter som är av intresse och vikt för allmänheten men det måste vara något jag drömt. Igår annonserade regeringen skattelättnader för pensionärer som det skrikits högljutt, och med rätta om, i två år - och vad händer? Är det någon som uttrycker något positivt eller fortsätter det bara att klagas...? Det finns inte ett uns av objektivitet i vare sig Ekdals, resten av TV4's uppföljning, eller för den delen någon annan journalist i det här landet verkar det som.

Och vad ska vi (Alliansen och dess trogna väljare) göra åt detta? Precis vad Maud & Co sa i tisdags: Ingenting!

Vi ska inte göra någonting annat än att fortsätta föra den politik som vi tror på och som vi vet är det enda rätta för att komma till rätta med rotorsakerna till 12 års vanstyre. Den enda skillnaden mot vad som gjorts under de första två åren är att vi alla (politiskt engagerade amatörer, riksdagsledamöter och proffspolitiker tillsammans) måste lära oss  T  A  L  A    T  Y  D  L  I  G  A  R  E. Tala klarspråk. Förklara vad vi gjort, vad vi tänker göra och varför. Det är ett klassiskt case av svårigheten att tydliggöra "what's in it for me?" och det måste vi bli bättre på. Men där gick även vårt startskott i tisdags. Fredrik, Maud, Jan och Göran har aldrig varit tydligare!

Och trots mediedrevets tappra försök att stressa upp oss och få oss att tappa fattningen så är det precis vad vi inte får göra nu. Vi ska inte gå på den lätta! Som Fredrik sa i tisdags: "En kortsiktig politiker som jagar populistiska opinionssiffror blir dum". Vi ska följa vår strategi och vi ska hålla fast vid vår gemensamma linje och politik. Vi är precis där vi vill vara just nu, för det är mycket lättare att ta sig ur ett underläge på två år än att behålla ett övertag lika länge.

Så att (S) har gått ut i stenhård kampanj, redan två år innan valet, det känns både kortsiktigt och dumt från en vänsterkant. Men här ifrån den högra kanten känns det jättebra! Vi kan bara säga "tack så mycket", "hoppas Ni är uthålliga" och "lycka till"!

Keep in mind that these are just the ones that I felt were significant. The original Playstation when first released by Sony also surprised many of its competitors by taking a hold of the RPG market, a market that the other companies such as Nintendo and Sega, weren't too interested in.

With that thought in mind, and the high production quality of many of these RPG's, one has to begin to wonder, is it perhaps the RPG genre that will allow Microsoft to maintain it's position over the PS3 in overall sales? I believe so. If Sony doesn't do something quick and regain some lost RPG ground, they can be looking at some problems with their Japanese hardware/software sales figures.

If the recent release of Tales of Vasperia is any indication, RPG fans are abundant and hungry for some good RPG's. Japanese fans lined up hours before stores opened (for the first time for an xbox360 game) in Japan for Tales of Vasperia. The market for RPG's in Japan is undeniable. The success of a game follows to our shores here as well in the U.S., where many anime/manga/video-game/japanese culture fans and other gamers enthusiastically wait for an RPG to be released.

Disgaea 3 has been released in Japan for the PS3 for quite some time now. However, it just reached the U.S. one week ago.

With all of these indicators floating around and as a true RPG fan, I think as of today it is fair to say that Microsoft Xbox360 is far ahead of Sony's Playstation 3 in the RPG realm.

Converting SPSS files to R should be a simple proposition. The must-have package "foreign" for R reads file formats from other popular statistics packages like SPSS, Matlab, SAS, STATA, etc. But, if you are working with SPSS data from professional pollsters who are designing their data to be used almost exclusively with one commercial package or another, bringing them into R and ending up with useful results requires a little work.

Let me explain. Public opinion survey data I work with is structured like this in SPSS:

When I get SPSS data from the research projects on which I've worked or from ICPSR, the data comes in a format that features two tables. The first (not shown above) is a matrix of cases by variables, with observed values in each cell. The second (shown above) is the metadata, or attributes, for each of the variables: listing the survey questions, the values of responses, labels for those values, and the type of data for each variable. The first matrix is very useful in R and the source of the data you want to use. The second is very useful in SPSS, which computes with the raw data and then applies the metadata, but is potentially confounding in R, especially when you have value labels for scale or continuous variables. An example of this would be a Likert scale (1-5 scale of agreement) with value labels. R interprets the metadata on the way in when you use the (default) read.spss function, and uses the metadata to create factors with the same values as the value labels. So, data shows up in R like this:

The problem is that when R makes the factors, it tosses out the original numerical values, leaving only the value label and potentially dropping all elements of scaling present in the SPSS file. This is fine if you are drawing up crosstabs and if you are making use of particular types of plotting. This is also fabulous if your factors really are discrete, and can not be interpreted like scales or continuous variables. However, when working with public opinion data, you're very likely to have used Likert or other types of scaled variables that you'll want to analyze as scales and not as factors.

Despite its steep learning curve, I do love R and figuring out the solution to this problem was one of the best ways for me to understand how R works. Here's a step-by-step guide to importing SPSS survey files into R and winding up with something you can use and a couple of best practices recommendations. I'd love to hear comments from other R users.

Step 1: Make a copy of your SPSS file. We're going to mess with a lot of the file, and you'll want something untouched for reference in case everything goes horribly wrong or you screw up a little syntax. Don't alter the original and file it away. Leave it for SPSS work. Use the copy to edit for use in R.

Step 2:Know your function.

When getting to know R, this is the most important step to understanding what you're doing. for every new function you try using, read its documentation to understand what it does and what your options are.  The read.spss function has the following defaults (to get documentation, open R, type 'library(foreign)', type '?read.spss')

read.spss( "file" , use.value.labels = TRUE, to.data.frame = FALSE, max.value.labels = Inf, trim.factor.names = FALSE, trim_values = TRUE, reencode = NA, use.missings = to.data.frame)

When you finally go to enter your code into R (or xemacs, or tinn-R, or RWinEdt) you will want your syntax to look like this:

Rfile <- read.spss("c:\\...\\SPSSfile.sav", to.data.frame=T, max.value.labels=X)

where to.data.frame saves the file to a data frame (natch), and max.value.labels sets the maximum number of unique value labels for which R will import a factor rather than a numeric vector. So, if you have two variables, the first with 1=agree, 2=disagree, 99 set to missing and a second variable scaled 1-10, with 99 set as the missing value and you set max.value.labels=2, the first will be imported as a factor and the second a numeric vector. Cool, huh? you may need to set it to 0.

Step 3: Know your data, Clean your data. Order your data - and do it In SPSS.

To this day i don't know why survey contractors don't make survey data more user friendly before they hand it over, except that survey purchasers don't ask for it. To make analysis easier on statisticians, survey contractors should by default deliver scale variables in an intuitive order with higher values coded as higher numbers.  Often, you'll go to do something more complicated than crosstabs with a data set, and find that instead of the most positive values coded with the highest numbers, data is reverse coded. In other words, the values assigned to a Likert scale will be 1=stongly agree, 2=somewhat agree, 3=neither agree/disagree, etc. rather than 5=strongly agree, 4=somewhat agree, etc. The latter coding is easier to work with because default results will be more intuitive (positive values indicating higher levels of agreement).

Now, I don't want to upset the R purists out there, but I think recoding on a massive scale is easier in SPSS. So, the two things you need to do in SPSS before reading into R:

Step 4: Make sure that the missing values are defined for every variable in the missing values column (that's the 'use.missings' command in the read.spss function). This is easy to do in SPSS, just figure out what the default NA values is in the data set, double-click on a cell in the "Missing" column, and enter the value. Then highlight the cell, copy it, and paste it down the line for all variables with the same NA marker. Be cautious- missing values may change within a dataset.

Also, make sure that the "planned missingness" or unobserved values (in a split sample, for instance) are marked clearly as distinct from missing values. My recommendation: create an indicator variable for each side of the split if it hasn't been done already. This will make splitting the data sets and multiple imputation easier, both in SPSS and in R.

Step 5: Recode your scale or continuous variables to be intuitive. I recommend doing this in SPSS because it is more intuitive than in R. In R, the recode function in the 'car' library looks like this:

Then, when you are done recoding, you have to detach and attach your dataset to see the new variable, and you can not i don't know how to edit the attributes imported from SPSS. SPSS mass recodes are easier. here is the syntax where '99' stands in for the missing value:

Boom. it's ready to go. Do this for all variables you want to analyze as numeric.

Save your syntax. The important thing to remember about working in both programs is to always save your syntax in a text editor in case for some reason you lose what you were working on. It happens to me all the time in SPSS, which is why I always save syntax frequently - if my file decides not to play nice, i don't have to do all the programming again, I can just run the script. The latest version of SPSS has a great set of recoding and mass editing functions- use them! but don't forget to paste into a syntax file rather than running them from the window. that way you can edit and reproduce your work, and as in the case above, alter it slightly to apply it to another set of varaibles.

After you have made your scales intuitive, save the SPSS file and import it into R with the read.spss function and have a blast producing great data visualization and taking advantage of the power of R. I know it might seem tedious to do, but I have just done this to 11 data sets, and I am finally ready to rock in R. It feels so good.
