Quick Review: Belkin ExpressCard and Griffin Clarifi

Two new accesories I've recently acquired are Belkin Media Reader-Writer ExpressCard™ Adapter and Griffin Clarifi Case for iPhone 3G.

Belkin Media Reader-Writer ExpressCard™ Adapter is compatible with multiple flash memory cards including SDHC cards. The previous Belkin Multimedia Reader & Writer ExpressCard™ does not support SDHC cards. This ExpressCard™ Adapter can be used with any laptops that have 34mm or 54mm ExpressCard™ slot built-in. Due to its size, this ExpressCard™ Adapter does not support CompactFlash cards.

Griffin Clarifi Protective Case for iPhone 3G has a close-up lens built in on a slider. The iPhone camera has a fixed lens with a fixed focal length, which makes it impossible to take a sharp close-up pictures of anything. With the addition of Griffin Clarifi built-in lens, it is now possible to take sharper close-up picture using the iPhone 3G. With the lens, the iPhone can now take pictures of objects 4 inches away.

Toen ik een TomTom kaart van over de 2gb zag bleek dat ik een klein probleempje had...
Ik heb namelijk maar een geheugenkaart van 2gb!

Dat ging dus niet passen...
Naar de winkel dan maar! :-)

Naar PDAshop in Antwerpen (geweldige winkel), op zoek naar kaartje met meer geheugencapaciteit...

Ik had op hun site al eens rondgekeken (url) en daar stond mooi een 8gb van SanDisk tussen voor 33€, dus daar ter plekke in de winkel vraag ik ook terug naar dat kaartje... Wat me wel mooi leek :-)
Die verkoper haalde dat ook direct van de site onder mijn 614c en zag dat dat compatible was.
Zodoende ik koop dat...

Paar uur later steek ik dat in men gsm, werkt niet... En vriend zijn pda nam het kaartje echter zonder probleem aan.. Bizar... Terug naar de winkel!

Kerel van de servicedesk van pdashop raade me aan om eens een "harde reset" te doen... Wat zoveel is als een format...

Thuisgekomen, zo gezegd zo gedaan... Harde reset...
Allez eraf, terug naar fabrieksinstellingen...

Ik wist dat er vanaf 4gb het toestel iets moet ondersteunen genaamd SDHC, maar ik dacht nu wel dat mijn vrij recente gsm dat beest toch wel zou moeten ondersteunen... Beetje rondgesurft, bleek dat toch veel mensen problemen hadden om 4gb+ kaartjes in hp's aan de praat te krijgen... Erg varieerend zelfs... Sommige werken wel, sommige werke niet, anderen werken soms (wtf?)...

Allezjah, terug naar pdashop ermee...
Daar heb ik nog een uur gezeten, waardor ik dus les gemist heb... (sorry maggy, nooit gedacht dat ze een uur nodig gingen hebben om da kaartje te analyseren...)

Uiteindelijk hebben ze toch geprobeerd om het kaartje in men gsm aan de praat te krijgen (op dezelfde manier als ik reeds geprobeerd had, tevergeefs) en het kaartje zelf onderzocht (maar is dus gewoon werkende)...
En ze hebben het dan maar terug gekocht van mij, en mij men geld terug gegeven...

Wat op zich best sympathiek was :-)

Apesar da SanDisk não ter dito uma palavra, o seu novo microSDHC de 16 GB já pode ser encontrado em várias lojas online e varejistas dos EUA, com um preço que varia entre 80 a 220 dólares.

É classe 4, o que quer dizer que escreve no mínimo em 4 Mbps. Alguns dos celulares compatíveis são, por exemplo, os smartphones Nokia N95, N96, N78 e os HTC Tytn II e Touch, entre outros.

Endlich ist es soweit, nachdem die Infos zu den Karten schon seit längerem im Web herumgeschwirrt sind, hat SanDisk sie nun offiziell angekündigt.

Im geizhals werden sie ab 54€ gehandelt. Hab für meine 8GB Ultra 35€ gezahlt, deswegen find ich den Preis gar nicht mal so schlecht.

Da könnte ich ja fast meinen iPod 5G in Rente schicken...

Esse simpático leitor de MicroSD (Transflash) vem no formato de uma joaninha (não me culpem, é o nome do inseto!). Além do formato ele não tem nada especial, mas pode agradar a tua namorada geek, aquele mala teu amigo ecologista e enfim. Ele não é muito grande e pode se usado como chaveiro se preferir e é compatível com MicroSDHC. Apesar de tudo, não custa mais caro que um leitor genérico de 10 dólares, na verdade ele custa 10 dólares.

November mendatang akan hadir satu lagi standar kartu memori. Namanya Embedded SD.

Menurut asosiasi SD Card (SDA), Embedded SD dimaksudkan untuk mempermudah desain platform pada ponsel dan perangkat elektronik konsumer. Standar baru ini memanfaatkan banyak dari standar SD (Secure Digital) yang sudah teruji dan terpakai saat ini.

Pada standar tercakup antara lain dukungan untuk pasokan daya 3,3V dan 1,8V, mekanisme partisi yang fleksibel agar beberapa partisi dapat menyimpan beragam tipe data, berbagai proteksi data dan power-saving, dan opsi untuk booting dari embedded SD. Artinya, SDHC yang sudah ada tetap kompatibel dengan Embedded SD.

“Fisik miniSD dan microSD saat ini banyak dipakai sebagai kartu penyimpan di ponsel, dan saat ini mendominasi pasar, dan diharapkan akan merupakan 90% dari semua slot kartu yang ada di ponsel pada tahun 2010, “ begitu analisis Nam Hyung Kim dari iSuppli Corp. “Standar Embedded SD dibangun dari standar SD yang sudah ada dan ditujukan pada kebutuhan penyimpan ponsel seperti kebutuhan akan konsumsi daya yang rendah, fungsionalitas booting, bentuk mungil, dan manajemen flash yang terintegrasi.”

Depois de muito barulho e pouco resultado por parte da OLPC, o fabricante chinês HiVision resolveu entrar no mercado de laptops de baixo custo. O modelo NB0700 da foto acima vem com Linux, LCD de 7 polegadas, processador de 400MHz com arquitetura MIPS, 64MB de RAM, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, três portas USB, 1GB de flash e um leitor de SDHC. O equipamento chega ao consumidor Chinês em Novembro por US$ 98.

A empresa também irá comercializar uma versão mais potente, o NB0800, que vem com processador 1.6GHz da Via e tela de 8.9 polegadas. Este modelo sairá por US$ 299.

Well, once again if someone tells me a pear tastes good, I have to taste it for myself.

Someone told me I could get a good quality memory card reader for under 5 dollars and it not be a piece of crap. So I bought it.

Well, not only does it read all my memory cards but it can do it at the same time. One thing it doesn't do is look awesome. So I hide it in my draw with my other crap. Yes, if its under 5 dollars I still have to classify it as crap. It feels good quality which still has me really confused. It reads fast which makes me wonder how those crooks can try charging people 50 dollars for the same thing in stores.

A Sandisk apresentou uma edição Extreme III de um cartão SD de alta capacidade (SDHC).

Apresentando um ganho de 50% de velocidade em relação ao anteriores de 20MB/s, o novo cartão é capaz de fazer 39 imagens de 6MB disparando a 4.5 frames por segundo. Além disso, é capaz de operar em temperaturas variando entre -25 e 85 graus Celsius.

Os novos cartões estarão disponíveis mundialmente em Setembro com as capacidades de 4, 8 e 16GB.

Macworld: SanDisk offers fastest SDHC cards to date

SanDisk will ship the fastest SDHC cards it has ever made in September, the company said on Wednesday.

The new cards were designed specifially for the new digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, like the Nikon D90. The SanDisk Extreme III can achieve speeds of 30 megabytes per second, the company said.

SanDisk said the SDHC card makes it possible to record 39 images in continuous shooting mode at 4.5 frames per second with a file size of 6.0 MB JPEG L Fine per image. The cards are also capable of operating in temperatures ranging from -13 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit or -25 to 85 degrees Celsius.

The cards will be available in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacities and will costs $64.99, $109.99, and $179.99, respectively.

SDHC Memory Card Tests with my Canon XSi

I ran some tests on the SDHC cards I'm currently using with my Canon XSi/450D. I tested the number of simultaneous RAW shots that each card was able to handle as well as the number of shots I could fire in 10secs. The RAW burst turned out to be 6 for all cards, which tells me that's the limit of the XSi's internal buffer. More cards are tested on Rob Galbraith's page.

Based on Rob's page, I'll be looking for one of these cards for best performance: SanDisk Extreme III 8GB 30MB/s Edition, PNY Optima Pro 8GB, SanDisk Extreme III 8GB, Lexar Professional 8GB, ATP Pro Max, or Kingston Ultimate 120x.

Update 8/29/08: PNY Optima Pro 8GB results posted. I ordered the PNY Optima Pro 8GB Class 6 card, and am disappointed in the results as it came in tied for last among my other cards. Perhaps the 2GB card Rob tested is better performing. I'll have to try a SanDisk Extreme III 8GB next.

Update 9/16/08: AData Turbo 8GB Class 6 results posted. This has been the worst card of the bunch. It struggles to complete the 6 RAW shots and pulls off only 8-10 saves in the 10sec test period.

Update 9/23/08: SanDisk Extreme III 8GB Class 6 30MB/s Edition results posted. You can't beat the SanDisk. It performed as its 4GB brother did - it wanted to get a 7th RAW burst frame, but just couldn't make it. I'm definitely at the limits of the camera -- a faster writing camera could take more advantage of the speed this card allows.

Final Thoughts

Fry's Feedback: The Patriot and AData cards are popular @ Fry's because of their cost, but don't provide the best performance.

Class Rankings: Don't always tell the whole story as there's wide variation in Class 6 speeds. A good Class 4 card is shown to outperform the cheap Class 6 cards.
