SFAR has formed with the objective to open eyes to a world of animal abuse and liberate those creatures who suffer under the heartless cruelty of human beings. Some forms of activities in which we will partake include: raising funds to benefit animal organizations, starting petitions with aims to curb the market for animal goods, and providing comfort to mistreated animals. We can make a lasting difference in the lives of thousands of these animals by keeping them away from the wrong hands and giving them a home in which they are welcome.

First, I realized how wrong I was about Joann Sfar's Vampire Loves. Its weird meandering nature, it's mixing of characters all searching for something is really really charming... The Rabbi's Cat I was already sold on, and reread it last month. Just finished Steve Martin's Born Standing Up, which is so intelligent and good-hearted, his quest so rigorous and serious. Thanks, Tim Kreider. (I'm trying to feel regret or envy that the book shows a case of super hard work and dedicated intelligence as a path to commercial success. I'd like to believe those qualities are in fact, valued in our media world.

Finally read Calvino's the Non-Existent Knight, which had a great minimum of characters and bizarre, meta-situations. I think I might not get to The Cloven Viscount before I return the book. Above that, a stack of student work, which I managed to get through and notate. Points of View is a book of short stories organized by narrative strategy, that inspired me to think on that subject a bit more widely, and also construct a few exercises for my students... Atop that, finally reading Don Quixote all the way through, but yes, that's an abridged version... I am unashamed.

"SÓCRATES EL SEMIPERRO"

"Mi nombre es Sócrates y no soy un simple perro. Soy el perro de Heracles. Mi amo es hijo de Zeus, es un semidios. Yo soy el perro del hijo de Zeus. Soy un semiperro: mitad perro, mitad filósofo. Mi filosofía consiste en no hacer nada. Cuando tengo hambre, como; cuando tengo sueño, duermo. Sigo a mi amo adonde quiera que vaya, con lo que me ahorro tener que tomar decisiones. Ya estaréis pensando que mi conducta se parece mucho a la de un perro corriente. Sólo que yo tengo el don del habla. Aun más, sé leer, no como mi amo".

¿A que Sócrates es especial?

Nuestro pragmático amigo es el protagonista de un cómic llamado "Sócrates el semiperro", que en su primer volumen narra las andanzas del simpático ¿animal? con su dueño, el héroe Heracles. Así, desfilan por sus páginas las hazañas del primero de los héroes de la mitología griega vistas desde la óptica de su perro.

Los autores de tan singular historieta son Joann Sfar (guión) y Christophe Blain (dibujos). El cómic de 48 páginas en color está publicado en su edición española por Ediciones Sins Entido, Madrid, 2006. Se puede encontrar en librerías especializadas.

El tema de fondo de este relato es la relación del hombre con la mujer. Heracles, es, como siempre, un torpe y bruto varón para el que las mujeres son objeto de deseo y de inalcanzable entendimiento. Sócrates se dedica a observarlo y a estudiar a través de su amo el comportamiento humano. Cómo él mismo dice:

"La especie humana se divide en dos géneros: los hombres semejantes a mi amo...y las mujeres, que se les parecen mucho. Pero las mínimas diferencias que separan a estos dos géneros tienen a mi amo como embelesado. No es él mismo cuando habla con ellas. Tampoco es él mismo cuando habla de ellas."

En fin, que lo que le mola a Sócrates es "la sensación de aprehender la realidad". Todo un personaje, de cómic, claro, ¿se imaginan que nuestros perros fueran filósofos, hablaran, leyeran y nos juzgaran moralmente?

It's always hard to weight the influence of a community over the cultural life of a country. That the point of the exhibition held at the Museum of Jewish Art and History : "showing the impact of the Jewish experience in the evolution of comics and graphic novels". It was a bit overcrowded, small, expensive (5,50E), weirdly displayed but hugely interesting ! I was amazed to learn that major comic-book artists like Kirby or Stan lee where from jewish lineage, that the most emblematic superhero, Superman, was invented by such artists. I, thus, discovered the importance of the Jewish tradition in the graphic novels and its huge impact on, not only on the act of creating, on Art and History but also on the shaping of the vision of the world and of the USA for generations of kids and then adults. Of course, the exhibition also explains the work of the immensely known Will Eisner and Art Spiegelman (Maus). Not to forget more recent artists like Joann Sfar and Robert Crumb.
So if you are spending time in Paris... ! But be quick, the exhibition end on January 27th, one week to go !

Il est toujours difficile de prime abord de quantifier le poids d'une communauté sur la vie culturelle d'un pays. Et c'est là tout le défi de l'exposition qui se tient en ce moment au Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme : mesurer "l'impact de l'expérience juive dans l'évolution de la Bande Dessinée et du roman graphique". Il y avait beaucoup de monde, c'était un petit peu, cher et bizarrement disposé mais incroyablement instructif ! Saviez-vous que Kirby ou Stan Lee étaient d'origine juive ? Que le plus emblématique des super-héros, Superman, fut créé par des membres de la deuxième génération d'immigrés juif ? Il m'a donc été possible de mesurer l'importance de la tradition juive dans les romans graphiques, non seulement sur les questions de création, d'art et de mémoire mais surtout sur la façon de voir le monde pour des générations de lecteurs, petits et grands.
L'expo s'est bien-sûr attardée sur le travail de Will Eisner et Art Spiegelman (Maus) et sur des artistes plus récents comme Robert Crumb et Joann Sfar.
Très instructif.

Att en stad har hemlösa är ett estetiskt problem för staden, De hemlösa stjäl utrymme i den offentliga sfären. Deras utrymmekrav är obetalt utrymme. Det sticker i ögonen på folk.

Jag ser då och då nyhetsinslag, dokumentärer och andra teveprogram om hemlösa. De framställs som ett problem. Jag undrar dock om det inte mer är förfulningen av staden de bidrar med än att man verkligen ser den individuella tragedin som man vill återställa till en lyckohistoria.

Jag minns en man jag träffade i Göteborg. Han hade byggt ett eget hem på slänten ovanför Ekedalsgatan med utblick över kolonilotterna vid Slottsskogen. Innan, berättade han, hade han bott i en husvagn ute vid Askim. Han var en samlare och över hela slänten låg det bråte. När saker försvann i området försvann brukade folk gå hem till honom. Polisen besökte honom ofta och försökte få honom att flytta. Men han trivdes bra där med sin flickvän. Han hade även ljutit en grund.

Jag reste iväg i ett halvår och när jag kom tillbaka hade de börjat bygga ovanför honom och där hans hydda hade varit gick det nu en gata. Det var därför polisen ville ha bort honom. De tänkte inte på hans väl och ve.

Det är det jag menar med att det främst är en estetisk och möjligen ekonomisk fråga. Han hade lagt beslag på platsen och spritt sina saker i det öppna. Inga väggar dolde deras göromål. Jag minns att jag såg en rakhyvel och lite hår. Han började svära och skrek att hans tjej skulle "ge fan i att raka fittan med hans rakhyvel." Hans närvaro störde eftersom han förfulade och inte för att han skulle vara farlig.

Hemlösheten är en revolt mot den gängse stadsdefinitionen: Att alla har ett hem och det är inom fyra väggar.

Il gatto parlante (non per molto, in verità...!) mette subito alla prova il rabbino padre della sua padrona Zlabya, con una serie di discussioni sull'ebraismo, poi passa a più generali discussioni sugli uomini (e le donne..!) fino a seguire il rabbino a Parigi, per conoscere la famiglia del nuovo marito di Zlabya.

L'atmosfera è molto gentile e piacevole, è quella di inizio Novecento dei fumetti di Hergè (Tin Tin, per intenderci!) ma l'Algeria e Algeri hanno una marcia in più per quanto riguarda la capacità di evocare e "uscire dallo sfondo", e i dialoghi sono quelli che ci si aspetta da una storia ambientata in mondo ebraico, pieni di un umorismo sottile e misurato. Insomma un bel lavoro, che guadagna punti in questa nuova edizione, per cui applaudo ancora Rizzoli 24/7.
