Good Works Tour is on the road again!

This morning we bid goodbye to Los Angeles and headed north. Around mid-day we arrived at the SPCA in Monterey. I entered the building not wanting any sort of a pet but left begging James for a Good Works Tour Dog. He told me I could have an imaginary dog, who I subsequently named Sparky. After watching the cute animals in their cages we got down and dirty cleaning animal carrying crates. Give us a sponge and a hose and we'll give you a whole ton of cleanliness.

After waving goodbye to all of the kittens and loading Sparky into our car we headed to Dorothy's Place where we cooked up a storm. That's right, we reheated spaghetti. Our mothers would be proud. We had a blast serving dinner to homeless women, and an even better time talking with them and the people who run the shelter. I know it was one of my favourite good works because I desperately want to do it again.

Jimbo finished up two videos today, feel free to start getting addicted to them.

With the credit crisis and homes being vacated like crazy - we all know and have heard the reports of people leaving their animals behind. To many - it is easy enough to do. You will reap what you sow - everything in life counts.

And again - we are seeing more and more people coming to light concerning animal cruelty. Just a few hours ago - a case in Missouri and a case in Vermont. All ring true of neglect - "many of them emaciated, injured and suffering from mange and parasites..." , eeeww. People who can't take care of themselves, are transferring that to their animals. I have seen homeless people take care of dogs better than a person with a home.

Since shaming a person into doing the right thing, with an animal (or themselves) and/or locking them up, as an animal doesn't seem to work - what will? Good grief. How many animals every year die like this? Think in terms of just the United States ~ Now take that into research facilities ~ Now continue the process. (Translates to children people. It does and you know it.) Does it piss anyone else off?

Where and what the heck happened to a compassionate person? A person who understood "I have responsibilities"?

The rescue shelters are getting overrun with animals because there are those out there seeking to do the right thing. They need help. An anonymous donation - is easy. Let me tell ya - send a dollar. It's a dollar they didn't have.

Everything works together. I've been saying it and I'm gonna keep saying it.

I know I have hit much on world news - but trust me - you really don't want me too. If you saw the pattern I saw - mucho scared. Cause and Effect.

I live 8 miles south of the White House in Prince George's county, MD. It's literally the armpit of Washington, DC. What follows is a very recent county event.

This horror story is seemingly from a newspaper of one of the 3rd world countries our military constantly terrorizes.

These people are far too calm and reserved after what happened to them. There is no way I would be as restrained after that went down. Frame me, break down my door and SHOOT MY DOGS?!! No fucking way! Handcuff my family members and track my dogs' blood throughout my house! Again, no fucking way!
Worse yet, the guy is the Mayor of the town. The county police and sheriff's department as well as officials on the federal level have no apologies for them.
I am glad some of us cherish the second amendment to the Constitution. An intruder in your home, thief or police officer, is target practice. In this case the police officers were murdering terrorists as well as trespassers. Why they choose to shoot down family pets is going too far. The ASPCA needs to pay these officers a visit and fine them heavily.
Remember the second amendment..."A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
I feel those under attack by the ever growing police state will need to protect themselves from those we entrust to oversee us. The various National Guards are now yet another branch of the US Armed Forces and can no longer be there to protect the citizenry from which it comes. Therefore, WE, THE PEOPLE have to form our own militia to secure our free state. Does that sound too revolutionary? Maybe, but it is also Constitutional. Those that stray from the ideals of the Constitution also stray from Patriotism.

Are we quite ready for this kind of police activity in our nation? These people were intentionally framed for a package of pot. It wasn't explosives, heroin, or even a whoopee cushion. It was a package of plant matter that was sent to their house and that delivery was insured by policing officials.
I am 50 and I know most people in my generation and younger has smoked it or still do. Nazi Gestapo action practiced in the mindset of the old television program "Dragnet" over marijuana is senseless. The federal government won't make tobacco illegal because they can tax it. There are far too many people that have died from that plant than would ever from pot. Has anyone ever died from smoking pot?

The Baltimore Sun story tells of a family terrorized and their dogs murdered because of the ludicrous laws that waste public funds, police time, tie up the court systems and house far too many "felons" in this country - send those cops to Iraq if they need something to do.
If I was Calvo I would find a doctor to prescribe me medical marijuana, grown by the feds, to control my frazzled nerves and constant nightmares. They better be getting a home makeover at the cost of the DEA - they are the ones that pushed this through.

The one thing that stays with me...why shoot the family pets? The report of the other family who suffered the same fate pushes the entire matter over the edge. Is this a real life version of the television program "The Shield" which features renegade cops that make their own laws to suit themselves?

Shoot my dog? It will be a gunfight.

Legalize Marijuana - and grow more pot.

The problem with the spay & neuter your pet campaign is vets don't make spaying and neutering accessible because they set the price so high. My vet told me, after spending $250 on all the puppy shots and examinations, I should have Gracie spayed before her first heat up. When I asked her how much it cost I about fell over, $300!

I had every intention of getting Gracie spade, but then we ended up moving. Not that I really wanted to move (only because I hate moving) but we were sharing a house with my niece and she just didn't want to live with a dog, even though Gracie rarely bothered her. Anyway the money I had saved to get Gracie Spade was used for the move.

Well the last few days Gracie has been moping around, and licking herself, a lot more than usual. Yep, you guessed it, she's in heat. We spent a lot of time walking around the neighbor, but now I don't dare walk her anymore than around the block. She's already flirting, and making googly eyes, with the fenced in dog on the corner. She almost got under the fence this morning! Then I just about freaked out when I saw a very large dog on the loose up the block. A pregnant dog is the last thing we need right now.

I did find a program, in Grand Rapids, called C-snip. It costs $55 but I haven't been able to accumulate $55 thanks to the price of gas, among other things. Even making my rent money has been an amazing feat the last couple months, but ole resourceful me has managed. If anyone would be kind enough to donate to the Get Gracie Fixed fund there is a Paypal button on the side bar --->. She and we would really appreciate any help.

About the case that Sarah has posted earlier, my personal opinion is that it might be a repeat job of the Bukit Panjang Kitten abuser. Here is the earlier case that is on SPCA's Online Appeal Webpage (please see the last page). Notice the bloodied mouth in both cases. Abuse or not for the latest case, please watch out for the cats and kittens there. If you do know of any Bukit Panjang Caregiver, please share the information with him or her.

Two Otago business pioneers were inducted into the Business Hall of Fame last night.

Sir George Fenwick (1847 - 1929) and Shariffe Coory (1866 - 1950) were given posthumus awards.

Previously, the hall of fame had only a virtual presence, but yesterday its new home on a 12m wall at the Owen G Glenn building at the University of Auckland was officially unveiled, followed by a gala dinner hosted by Governor-General Anand Satyanand.

The Coorys were among the first Lebanese to emigrate to Australia where they employed 1500 people in their wholesale and manufacturing business before selling and moving to Dunedin in 1892.

One of Mrs Coory's great gransons, Malcolm Farry said that she she worked hard to break down barriers and did philanthropic work with the Lebanese community. She set up a workshop where Lebanese women made shirts and aprons for hawkers to sell; and also invested in property.

One of her greatest gifts was passing on her belief in entrepreneurship and "she had a significant influence on her grandchildren", he said.

Her success is even more notable given that female entrepreneurship was even more of an achievement in her day.

Sir George came to Otago with his family in 1856 and took up a printing apprenticeship with The Otago Witness when he was 12. He later joined the Otago Daily Times and eventually owned both papers.

He edited the ODT from 1890-1909.co-founded the New Zealand Press Association in 1878; founded the Otago SPCA in 1882, the first in the country and was knighted in 1919.

The Hall of Fame, which is sponsored by Fairfax Media, is a good way to recognise business success which doesn't usually get the same recognition as sporting and artistic achievements.

As I was getting ready for work this morning...and this usually bogs down in my closet...what to wear, what to wear, what to wear...you know the story....I heard a firm knock at my front door....UPS, no doubt. Maybe FedEx? The guy who used to read our power meter in the basement (bless his heart) doesn't come around anymore as everything is automated. So, I dash downstairs, and peek out the front window.

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="240" caption="Could you love me??"][/caption]

There sits a little boy, around 10 or 11 maybe, with little tan puppy. This I do not see everyday, but looks innocent enough. I open the door and say, "Hi there...what do you need?"

"Would you like to have a puppy?" he asks, as the little dog runs around his feet.

"Oh sweetie, I really can't take a dog right now...I have two cats. Do you have to get rid of him?"

"Yes, my Mom said I had to find a home for him...we can't keep him. His name is London"

Fancy name for a dog that is soon to be homeless....got the kid's name...Jerome....and made him promise me that under no circumstances would the dog just be put out or left somewhere. And I got his phone number and Mom's name.

"OK, if you can't find a home somewhere, and if your Mother can't take him to the S.P.C.A.(I made him memorize it), promise you'll bring London back here so I can find him a home, and you won't just leave him somewhere. That would be really mean and he'd be scared and hungry. Promise?"

He did and was off down the street. Now maybe, just maybe, he'll find a home, but I seriously doubt it. A lot of people go to workand just can't willy-nilly take in a dog one morning (like me)...though there probably are angels who do just that. You have to wonder if the family is moving or just can't afford to feed a growing puppy anymore. Sign of the times?

So.....here's a sweet little dog named London, and he was quite obedient and sweet...followed Jerome when he left as ordered. And he's looking for a good loving home. Someone who'll feed him and take him for shots and have him neutered....you know,...all the stuff dogs need. Oh, and love him. A lot. If you leave a reply here that you'd like to have him...I can see your email address (though the rest of the world can't)..I'll contact you and make arrangements. Somebody is getting a sweet little puppy. Good dog, London! Good dog.

So this weekend, in addition to the 3G iPhone cradled on my work station right now, I have a very new addition to the family.

Please welcome my new kittie!

She's 2 1/2 months old, a brown tabby and just about the most adorable thing ever. Last Thursday, I went to the EastBay SPCA to look at kitties, and over the weekend, I picked her up (because I needed time to buy all her supplies and set everything up. Her bowls are ceramic cuteness).

I have her all set up in the bathroom for the week to slowly get her accustomed to her new home, but this morning, she was already pining to go out and explore the rest of the house. When we, boy and I, first brought her home, she always ran to the back of the toilet whenever someone opened the door. But I visited her a lot through the afternoon and night yesterday, so now she's comes to me when I call (well the few times I tried) and nuzzles my hand. Also, she purrs incessantly, which made it that much harder to leave the house this morning. (I'm hoping that feeding her will force me to get up earlier in the morning, so I'm not always running ridiculously late.)

This is SO exciting. I'm a first time pet-owner and definitely first time mommy, so I'll post more anecdotes and lesson learned as we move forward. Of course there will be LOTS and LOTS of pictures.

.

One dilemma: I have no idea what to call her. Names are so hard because I want something that goes with her character but is also 'profound' or at least a double entendre (not the sexual kind).

Eleanor- like the first lady, but it sounds really old.

October- I LOVE this name and want to give it as a middle name for my future/potential daughter. However, a lot of people think that would be traumatizing to the child. So technically, I could give that name to the kitten. But she's way to cute and happy to be a dark, brooding October.

... I'm stuck. What are your suggestions? I can't keep calling her 'baby,' 'cutey,' or 'it' forever. So please comment below or email me with your thoughts. Gimme lots! :)

.

This is when we just took her home. I hadn't eaten all day, and I'm guessing Ty hadn't either, so we stopped by Denny's to pick up some food.

*crouch* She's so sleepy...

With an intimate little turnout, the meeting began with announcement that this will be our last fire

With an intimate little turnout, the meeting began with announcement that this will be our last fire meeting in Big Sur.

Mike Dietrich and the IC will be transitioning to another fire team on Monday. Mike D. introduced Mike Boone who will be replacing him and whose team will ensure the fire remains where it is, safely in containment lines.

The fire was a “happy fire” today – crews were able to bring fire all the way to the top of the northern containment lines before humidities came up and they had to stop burning operations for the moment. When conditions are more favorable they will be able to burn all the way down to the Los Padres dam, sealing off the threat to Carmel Valley.

The area from Bottcher’s Gap to Devil’s peak will be complete by tomorrow morning which will tie up the Palo Colorado threat. (clapping!!)

There’s one little spot along Old Coast Road that is still being worked by crews.

The fire is still active down south in the southeast corner – it’s number one focus for the east side crew. The fire didn’t move today and fire line construction is under way.

The road is opening south of Coast Gallery on Sunday morning.

The Basin fire is not out – it’s still very active, though the west side is 90% contained. The fire is just under the Observatory right now, but is laying down and they expect crews will save it.

The fire did burn through Tassajara and four outbuildings were lost, but everyone is safe.
Next steps are to continue burning the eastern line until the fire is fully contained.

Mike Boone who is coming in is a local guy who knows the area and his crew will be based out of Molera, eating at our restaurants, helping our economy and taking care of spot fires.

Spot fires are popping up and will continue to do so in the coming weeks and months. 99% of them will be benign. Please be very discerning when reporting a spot fire – only report true threats.

The local fire team will be downsizing significantly to 100-150 people starting Monday do clean up. They hope to be at a point very soon where they’re not staffed during the evenings. 5-7 more days until they’re downsized further into a true rehab mode.

Sam Farr was at the meeting and had these messages to share:

Thanks for calling me with your concerns. I have brought pressure to get the road opened and we’re glad it worked. Mike and Frank have been great through this and we’ve learned a lot. We passed a great bill this week to open up emergency funds for the forest service and fire fighting. We’re working like crazy to get all the fires in California declared a national disaster so personal losses can use FEMA support. Keep all your notes on expenditures made and track income lost!

I sponsored, and Congress unanimously adopted a resolution on Saturday to thank all the firefighters – a framed copy was given to Frank Pinney.

Lessons: we can do a way better job of mapping, we need local people to stay in and work as emergency personnel in this situation. Let’s really take the lessons learned. Make a note now, while it’s still fresh, of the things you think we could better do to prepare ourselves in the future. We can be a model for how other communities do it. Let’s turn this into a learning lesson and asset for all of us.

On to social service announcements, etc:

The Health Center is back in business full time – they will continue to provide free and discounted services to everyone who has been financially impacted by the fire. More than 900 cases were treated by Health Center volunteers since this started, and they will continue to serve the firefighters on the new crew coming in to Molera. Thank you Sharon!!

SPCA will have free pet food on Sunday between 10-2 at Fernwood.

CPOA is transitioning from a relief effort to a planning phase - determining next steps how to best assist the community get back on it’s feet. Checks not yet picked up will be available at the Grange on Tuesday.

Rob at OES expects to have the damage assessment report done within the next week and half, and then we’ll have a “one-stop-shop” available to provide assistance in the rebuild. Pick up and fill out a form from them at the Grange - it will tell you more about what services will be available when this is “shop” is open and help you define your needs.

The essential impact of this fire in Big Sur is currently estimated at $781 million – including environmental impact, lost business and property, etc. This is huge, and we can also remember the hundreds of billions of dollars saved by this fire.

Acknowledgements, appreciations and team medallions were presented from Mike at the IC to Frank Pinney and Martha, as well as to Sharon Carey and Danielle Latta for medical support.

More certificates, team pins of appreciations or rounds of thanks were presented by the IC to Jeannie Alexander, John Farrington, Jess Mason, Cody Oliver, Penny Verigge, Barbara Ray Daughters, Sequoia Chappellet, Jaci Pappas, Leona in IC communications, the translator and Lisa Goettel.

Q&A
As we speak there is a BAER team that is working on rehabilitation planning and will be working with CAL FIRE and the OES to mitigate landslides and the ongoing impact of this fire.

The CPOA and Chamber are actively working together right now, finding ways to rebuild the community. Frank is encouraging both groups to begin planning for road work etc. that will ensure our safety in the months to come.

KUSP will keep a web page up through the recovery efforts.

Yesterday a cat followed me into the house from the garden. He looked sickly so I took him to the SPCA, hoping the vet there would take care of him. I turned him in and then asked if I could adopt him if no one wanted him and I was told, "No" because I turned him in. How is this fair? I only found the cat. It's seems like they're taking joy from putting cats down (killing them). So, now I have to find someone to take in the kitty so he doesn't die. I don't have a picture but he's super cute and very very friendly and quiet. He's black and white. He's at the SPCA at 19 E. Ridge Pike, right outside of Philadelphia. His ID number is 166734. I've been calling him "Follow" since he followed me inside. Well, I've been calling him that in my head since he's not here. If you can, please help me save Follow.

Happier News

Ella planned a button swap and I got Kimberly. She made a lovely necklace, a magnet (that's on my fridge right now) and some very cute buttons. Here is a picture (magnet not pictured):

[caption id="attachment_63" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Little red caboose button swap"][/caption]

I made buttons and put them on a recycled cotton tote bag. I'm really into tote bags. It's so nice not having bags all over the place that end up in the trash. Here's what I sent to Kimberly:

I mean come on!

From an article in the Los Angeles Times...

"In retrospect, lighting the match was my big mistake. But I was only trying to retrieve the gerbil," Eric Tomaszewski told bemused doctors in the Severe Burns Unit of Salt Lake City Hospital.

Tomaszewski, and his homosexual partner Andrew "Kiki" Farnum, had been admitted for emergency treatment after a felching session had gone seriously wrong. "I pushed a cardboard tube up his rectum and slipped Raggot, our gerbil, in," he explained. "As usual, Kiki shouted out "Armageddon", my cue that he'd had enough. I tried to retrieve Raggot but he wouldn't come out again, so I peered into the tube and struck a match, thinking the light might attract him."At a hushed press conference, a hospital spokesman described what happened next. "The match ignited a pocket of intestinal gas and a flame shot out the tube, igniting Mr. Tomaszewski's hair and severely burning his face. It also set fire to the gerbil's fur and whiskers which in turn ignited a larger pocket of gas further up the intestine, propelling the rodent out like a cannonball."Tomaszewski suffered second degree burns and a broken nose from the impact of the gerbil, while Farnum suffered first and second degree burns to his anus and lower intestinal tract.

The displayed body of a three year old female dog was discovered today, hanging from the branch of a willow tree along Willow Cale Road in this quiet, generally-peaceful - accept for certain individuals - little city. The area of the city in question is a frequently travelled route within the confines of the city limits, subject to frequent suspicious individuals and their subsequent behaviour, as these nefarious individuals go about their daily activities, many of which they would not want the public or world at large to be aware of.

According to SPCA Special Constable Debbie Goodine the poor animal died a slow, agonizing, death at the hands of unknown human individuals or individual, who left her to slowly strangle, as evidenced by the indications the animal attempted to bite and thrash her way clear of the willow while she bravely fought for her life. She stated that the area in question is strewn with debris, garbage, and the remains of several other dead animals, but that this scene was particularly grisly and ugly to the extreme. She couldn't determine accurately the amount of time the animal had been displayed hanging from the willow because of the frozen state of the body when reported to her.

Prince George is nestled in one of the prettiest valley systems in the world, the Frasier Valley, a vast ecological system that spans the south to north length of the province and provides the lucky humans residing here with everything we need to live a peaceful and productive life style. Picturesque and soul-capturing the city is home to around 75,000 cold northern human souls, use to a slow, meandering life style that leaves most people shocked at the sight of an animal many of them cherish enough to keep around their own households, hanging from a local willow tree for an extended amount of time, no one is sure just how long, but obviously it was at least a few days before anyone reported it. Mornings are excursions before work with pets or loved ones, people are friendly and outgoing, spending time to help neighbours, friends and even strangers, but are intolerant of individuals perpetrating deeds upon innocent animals, such as the individual or individuals who carried out this detestable act of depravity.

Why would people ignore a dead dog hanging in a willow tree for days on end? The answer is most people around here wouldn't, it has mostly to do with the type of individuals frequenting the area in question, who are often use to incessant violence against the innocent and those unable to defend themselves, having been the victim many times themselves at the hands of family, friends and yes strangers and therefore have learned to take care of number one first, to mind your own business, unless they want to be the next victim.

The individuals or individual responsible for this cowardly, sick and detestable act of unneeded and unwarranted torture against a living soul unable to protect itself from individuals of a species it has grown to see as a friend and saviour, have probably been the victim of such violent acts themselves in the past. They may have been born with a curiosity without a conscience, which may mean their not actually evil per say, be bio-chemically imbalanced due to dietary, genetic, or unknown factor or factors, or even caught up in the emotional hurricane of fear tearing up the fabric of culture and societies that have existed for millennium.

What does the current state of the world have to do with an individual choosing to take out their anger, fear, frustration, curiosity, stress, or anxiety on an innocent animal in this remote little corner of the planet? I'm glad you asked!

The world today breeds fear in humans subject to the uncontrollable forces we see and feel controlling our lives around us, a fear inherited from our ancestors' successful battle with nature, in which fear was a necessary element in our being able to survive the claw and tooth battle by avoiding confrontation with stronger, faster and fiercer competitors. One only needs to take a stark look at events occurring in all geographical locations of the planet to understand the stress, anxiety, and fear growing due to the changing world around us that we appear powerless to alter or change affectively; it's not surprising that many humans would respond to the current situation with fear. None of us were born with the inherent intelligence, understanding and comprehension to truly perceive the complicated events occurring in the wide world around us and respond without fear, or given the ability to stand outside the emotional fears we've inherited, this is something humans need to learn, to accomplish and we will get better down our evolutionary road, if were to survive ourselves.

The way the individual or individuals decide to express the fears were all feeling in these undetermined times often leads individuals alone, or unwilling to ask for help or advice about their feelings, into dark areas of the human soul that the individual or individuals perpetrating crimes against life, such as the killing of this animal, have travelled into. They may feel that it's only a ‘dirty animal', that their lack of feeling for the animal is normal, but even if this were true, there is something sick about the way they choose to express their feelings, they should find new ways to express their feelings, if they have any, a condition that should have a sane individual questioning their sanity and hopefully reaching out for help.

The dark hole they look out of appears as an inescapable prison before them with no ladder upon which to escape their own fears. The strength to pull themselves by the moral bootstraps out of their bottomless hole is beyond the reach of most humans once they have fallen in, for the human ego is a stubborn foe, one who would often rather burn the house down then come face to face with the truth within themselves. They should reach out to the people in their lives for help in understanding why they do the things they do and how to change their choices, something that takes a lot more strength then choosing to hurt a living thing that has no way of protecting itself from their fears.

Certainly, shock, anger, and disbelief were the first reactions of Prince Georges' citizens when they learned that someone in their community had strung up an innocent animal by the neck and left it displayed in a public place. Now that the emotion has died down, maybe we need to reach out gently through the community to the perpetrators of this unfortunate decision. To let them know that understanding, not judgement, is available to help them accept responsibility for their decision. To step forward bravely, so they can head down a different road hand in hand with fellow humans who also feel these pent up angers, fears, and frustrations, but have developed the strength and fortitude to effectively say no to these impulses to lash back at life. That their feelings are not their fault and they do not need to travel in the dark alone and they have the strength to make their decisions without letting their fears, make the choices. While it's not likely they will step forward, it would be the right decision to reach out, just in case they want to change their ways, or even for other individuals in the community who might be struggling with coping with their feelings.

The fearful should remember that the truly fearless see themselves as normal, that to torment and suffering their is a limit; to fearing none, that no passion so effectively robs the human mind of all its powers of acting correctly and reasoning rationally as fear, that their fears have many eyes and ears and can see things which could exist, but often don't, that hopes are dupes as fears are liars and that many of us do understand what their going through and stand ready to provide whatever help we can and their willing to accept.

I was swinging today and I saw two cars drive past each other and stop. "Drug Deal", I thought. A few minutes later when both cars had left I started walking home and saw some animal in the middle of the sidewalk, and naturally I ran towards it to make it run away. I came within 10 feet and it still didn't move. This was getting weird. I knew not to get too close lest it bite me, so I circled it and started mewing to it. Things like "Hey baby, are you ok? I won't bite if you won't either. " The sort. I threw a pinecone at it to see if it would run away. The thing landed within a foot and the cute wittle hedgehog stayed stalk still. I thought it might be dead, frozen in a position of fright. Then an SPCA van pulled up and started to remove the animal. The cars had stopped not for drugs or illicit activity, they just wanted to help a scared hedgehog! I always complain that my father is jaded and assumes the worst in people. Maybe I'm starting to do the same. I'm starting to undermine human dignity in my mind, not even giving people a chance. Its disgusting. It took that event to make me realize it. Startling, I'll admit. I must mind my thoughts, I don't want to turn into a pessimist.
