Japonya'dan başlayarak tüm dünyada büyük yankı uyandıran Tamagotchi, yeni versiyonu ile bir çığır açtı.

Some people are just simply stupid. The uncomplicatedness of some people frustrates me, then again, we can’t all be walking basket cases with chips on our shoulders about some dark and mysterious past, but wouldn’t that be interesting if we were?

Example.

There is this girl that I went to school with during my freshman year of high school. She is blonde, thin enough, with wide bright eyes, a natural non-orange tan, and a pretty smile. She was on the dance team, had a lot of friends, and always had some sort of boyfriend. Recently, as in sometime not too long ago this summer, she got married to some guy that she had been dating for a year or two. Because I am a faithful facebook user, I can tell you with great certainty that she had a beautiful wedding. The bridesmaid dresses were a bit odd in my opinion, a creamy aqua with baby pink belts made out of thick ribbon material, but her dress was beautiful, perfect, something that if I marry, I’ll probably venture to get. She had a fantastic photographer and even went to Jamaica for her honeymoon. All of her friends were there –her family, everyone important to her.

Part of me won’t hide the fact that sometimes when I think about all of the damn people getting married –particularly girls, I grow slightly envious. Then I realize that perhaps it’s not even really envy, more like restless and self-doubt, wondering if I’ll ever do the same, worrying that if I do, maybe I won’t be making the best decision but instead, marrying someone who will make me regret the decision two minutes after cutting into the white cake.

This girl is one of many examples inside my head –that I won’t waste my time in telling you, simply because all of them are the same. These people are all simple. The aforementioned beauty queen gone (what do you know) bride and all of the wedding attendees, smiling wide and joyously at the occasion with beer bottles in their hands wearing fancy clothes that you, as a mere passerby, would never assume that they owned, are all very uncomplicated people. They relish in their lives of dropping out of school, beauty school students, struggling to keep themselves in that endeavor, cell phone reps, and just plain rednecks that live from weekend and beer keg to beer keg. They like to fish. They like to hunt. They take lots of pictures drunk and by the pool, keeping up their tans because that’s the only thing that makes them attractive, because without all of their eyeliner, hard-earned tans, and bleached hair streaked with highlights, they are so incredibly dull, it’s rather sad. I am far from envious of that, I assure you. Despite the fact that most days I look into the mirror and think of how ugly my “foreign” features are here in such a small Mayberry-like town, I do not wish to be white either.

Am I saying that white people automatically entail dullness and stupidity? No, I am not. However, in my experience thus far, and living where I do, it sure does weigh heavily upon such a conclusion.

As a therapist and as a reader, I’m sure you want to sit back in your big armchair with your thick-rimmed glasses, a pen in between your fingers and a bad resting on your crossed knees and say with annoyance, “You think that you are too complicated for everyone else. How foolish.”

Perhaps it is. But I just can’t get over the fact that nobody in my area can grasp anything other than the silly little relationships that they’re in and the simplicity in such small victories like maintaining a 9-5 so that they can contribute to the big party this coming weekend. Even some of the KAD’s that I’ve met in this area, I can’t talk to. It just doesn’t work. Not that they’re supposed to be better at the whole being complicated business, but their ignorance and shallowness regarding adoption –something that has a great deal to do with them, annoys me to no end. This is why I try to be a very open minded person when it comes to approaching their problems or questions, making sure to be more than friendly and helpful when it comes to listening to them and trying to make an effort. Why is it that I can find nobody like that to run with? I am tired of being the only weed in the midst of flowers. I’d rather just scorch the entire field and start over than be alone.

And I am going to publish this unedited because I really just can’t give a crap about it right now. I am once again under the parasol, staring out into the acreage of our backyard with a melted iced grande non-fat stirred caramel macchiato, making sure that my dog isn’t running into the field and bringing back all sorts of ticks to crawl over me at night, and waiting for something in my life to happen. Something messy, because that’s the only thing exciting these days.

I love coffee. Always have. I love the smell better than the taste, and I really love the tast

I love coffee. Always have. I love the smell better than the taste, and I really love the taste, even though it is strong and bitter and strange. I can't help it. It was love at first sniff. I have also never liked tea. My gran used to give me hot, sweet tea with lashings of milk when I was poorly or angry, or miserable. It was supposed to make me feel better. It didn't. It mostly made me feel rather sick. Even the thought of drinking a cup of tea makes me feel all heavesome and nauseous now. I love the smell of Earl Grey tea. My ex husband used to drink pots of Earl Grey as a cure for a hangover. I don't know whether it worked, but it used to smell divine. I believe it has bergamot in it. Bergamot smells faintly of oranges and spices. It's lovely. I always associate the smell with Sunday afternoons sprawled on the sofa watching films and being very quiet. I wouldn't want to drink it though. It looks like cat wee.

Coffee on the other hand has always been a huge pleasure. When we were kids my mum used to make us milky coffee as a bed time treat. I know this sounds ludicrous now, but this was the seventies. The time of Angel Delight and Findus Crispy Pancakes. The time when your parents would let you go to parties with a two litre bottle of Woodpecker Cider, because after all, it's just like fizzy fruit juice isn't it? The time when my mum still used to eat bread and dripping as a treat, rather than to bring on an early heart attack.

She would make the coffee with lots of sugar and lots of hot milk. The only thing I didn't like about it was the thick and gruesome milky skin that used to form on the top of the mug, which I would take off with a spoon and leave draped on a plate looking like a melting puddle of American Tan tights. Urgh! The worst thing was if you thought it hadn't cooled enough yet for the skin to form and you took a swig only to find that the skin was just lurking in an evil manner in the middle of the mug. It would assault your top lip and dry immediately in a kind of wrinkly horrible cocoon of vileness. That always made me feel a bit sick.

As I got older my coffee tastes became more sophisticated and I discovered the joys of capuccinos. I also went to France and discovered real coffee. My parents had a coffee machine, one of those kinds that they still use in America, with the big glass jugs underneath, but it didn't taste anything like as good as the fabulous coffee you would get served in a French cafe in one of those little neat cups with the creamy head of coffee foam on the top and that gorgeous, rich smell. It was coffee that had texture as well as taste. I loved it. As long as I could ask for a 'cafe creme s'il vous plait' and 'ou est les toilettes?' I was set for French holiday heaven.

I moved away from milky, sweet coffee right through the scale to a time when I would drink espressos and double espressos with no sugar. I drew the line at Greek and Turkish coffee because it was too gritty and too sweet, but a double espresso was the epitome of coffee perfection at one time of my life. A time when it didn't matter if my guts dissolved and I had no sleep.

Now I have three children to look after and spending the day with the jitters from too much caffeine and the nights more awake than normal, is not an attractive option. Sometimes when I'm feeling frivolous I will have a single espresso, but never in the afternoon, no matter how tired I am. I am now a fan of the rather boring Americano with room for milk. I like milk in my coffee, not much. Hardly any in fact. My dream coffee looks like a mud pie when the milk has been added, but I find that just a tiny drop of milk takes any bitterness away and makes the coffee slip down that bit more smoothly. If it's good coffee and I'm having a second cup I might well have it black, just to be daring.

I actually like Starbucks' coffee. As a confirmed coffee drinker you will have no idea of the agonies a woman goes through in a country of tea drinkers where real coffee is considered too posh and expensive. Coffee in cafe's until Starbucks came along was a minefield. Instant coffee is only bearable if it is a good make and made well, and bearable is about the best word to describe it, even at its best. Cafes rarely do this in my opinion. They go for the cheapest option and charge you double because it's coffee. Invariably tea drinkers used to get a huge mug full of tea based joy and sometimes even a pot of hot water and more tea to go with it. A coffee drinker would pay way more and usually get a tiny cup of sub standard crap that tastes like sewage.

My particular hate was those places where they made all coffee with hot milk. Milky coffee was fabulous when I was eight. Now I hate boiled milk. I will drink it every now and again, if I have to, for the sake of politeness, but I just don't like it. It smells funny and it coats your tongue in that weird way. No, no, no. The places that make coffee with boiled milk nearly always use the worst instant coffee in the world, Mellow Birds, and make it very, very weak indeed. It has that peculiar metallic taste which reminds me of institutions such as hospitals and bingo halls and is very wrong indeed.

Second to those were the places that thought they were posh. They would either make real coffee with those glass jug devices. This would sit, stewing on the side for several hours until the coffee was burnt, bitter and carcinogenic and would peel the enamel from your teeth with the first sip. Or they would have those weird plastic cup devices with filter paper and 'coffee' trapped in the bottom. They would bring it to your table with the plastic cup resting on your real cup and the whole thing awash with boiling water. It would drip through into your pathetic cup and take about half an hour to brew. It would always be weak and disgusting and cold. Rambouts I think this particular coffee based torture was called.

So, when I first visited a Starbucks in Vancouver about twelve years ago I thought I had died and gone to heaven. This ecstasy was only bettered when they started opening in the UK. I admit that their coffee isn't always the finest, but the atmosphere is great. I love the sofas. I love the chilled atmosphere. I love the fact that they're open in Borders. All the other ones that sprang up afterwards are o.k. but I still get excited about Starbucks even if they are an evil megabrand bent on mass destruction. At least I can have a decent coffee while they're doing it.

At home I drink Illy coffee and use a cafetiere, because it's convenient. I have a Gaggia machine which I inherited in my divorce. It is complicated and seems to be full of sand. One day, when I have several hours to spare I will work out how to use it and probably never look back. In the meantime the cafetiere does the trick nicely. I will also drink Lavazza coffee, which is rather nice. My parents like Lazy Sunday by The Harrogate Coffee people I think. My friend Andrea swears by Whittards beans. It's all a question of personal taste. I saw some green coffee beans the other day. I have yet to try them but they look very intriguing.

The world of coffee is rich and fascinating and thankfully getting more tasty and accessible by the day. The UK is now a place where a decent cup of coffee can be purchased on every high street and they serve mugs instead of piffling little cups and saucers. A decent brew is within reach of us all. At last. This is real progress. Sod the invention of the microchip when you can have a decent coffee and the dessert of your choice after a hard day at the coal face of consumer therapy. Hoorah.

Poor Starbucks! Apparently, closing for 3 hours to retrain employees a few months ago didn’t

Poor Starbucks! Apparently, closing for 3 hours to retrain employees a few months ago didn't help.

Starbucks Corp. has announced it's closing 600 underperforming stores in the United States.

The Seattle-based premium coffee company also announced it expects to open fewer than 200 new company-operated stores in the United States in fiscal 2009.

The company says it will try to place workers from those stores in other existing stores, but it's just coffee and tips. We know most of those people will lose their jobs.

I have to laugh at Starbucks as a whole. You saturated the market, serving poor quality products and tricking everyone into thinking they were heaven. You also made us think that $7.00 for a latte is not a bad price although I can get two gallons of gas for the same price. You fought the morning rush hour with bad service and topped off our drinks with more foam and less drink.

In 2000, I worked in a B&N that had a cafe "serving Starbucks coffee." I'm sure you've seen their logo in the window of you local B&N/cafe. Well, the cafe did so good that Starbucks actually came in and built a free standing store of their own next door, less than 20 feet across the road. B&N had never put it in their contracts that Starbucks couldn't open up a store within so many feet of their own cafes, so how embarrassing for both companies!

I say good riddance! Now maybe the independent coffee sellers with good service, good products, and better prices can get back to business!

Founder and CEO Howard Schultz had a great concept, and it worked for a while. But too many new stor

Founder and CEO Howard Schultz had a great concept, and it worked for a while. But too many new stores and diverse products changed the experience

Starbucks announcement that it will close 600 stores in the U.S. is a long-overdue admission that there are limits to growth.

In February 2007, a leaked internal memo written by founder Howard Schultz showed that he recognized the problem that his own growth strategy had created: "Stores no longer have the soul of the past and reflect a chain of stores vs. the warm feeling of a neighborhood store." Starbucks tried to add value through innovation, offering wi-fi service, creating and selling its own music. More recently, Starbucks attempted to put the focus back on coffee, revitalizing the quality of its standard beverages. But none of these moves addressed the fundamental problem: Starbucks is a mass brand attempting to command a premium price for an experience that is no longer special. Either you have to cut price (and that implies a commensurate cut in the cost structure) or you have to cut distribution to restore the exclusivity of the brand. Expect the 600 store closings to be the first of a series of downsizing announcements. Sometimes, in the world of marketing, less is more.

Schultz sought, admirably, to bring good coffee and the Italian coffee house experience to the American mass market. Wall Street bought into the vision of Starbucks as the "third place" after home and work. New store openings and new product launches fueled the stock price. But sooner or later chasing quarterly earnings growth targets undermined the Starbucks brand in three ways.

First, the early adopters who valued the club-like atmosphere of relaxing over a quality cup of coffee found themselves in a minority. To grow, Starbucks increasingly appealed to grab and go customers for whom service meant speed of order delivery rather than recognition by and conversation with a barista. Starbucks introduced new store formats like Express to try to cater to this second segment without undermining the first. But many Starbucks veterans have now switched to Peets, Caribou and other more exclusive brands.

Second, Starbucks introduced many new products to broaden its appeal. These new products undercut the integrity of the Starbucks brand for coffee purists. They also challenged the baristas who had to wrestle with an ever-more-complicated menu of drinks. With over half of customers customizing their drinks, baristas hired for their social skills and passion for coffee, no longer had time to dialogue with customers. The brand experience declined as waiting times increased. Moreover, the price premium for a Starbucks coffee seemed less justifiable for grab and go customers as McDonald's and Dunkin Donuts improved their coffee offerings at much lower prices.

Third, opening new stores and launching a blizzard of new products create only superficial growth. Such strategies take top management's eye off of improving same store sales year-on-year. This is the heavy lifting of retailing, where a local store manager has to earn brand loyalty and increase purchase frequency in his neighborhood one customer at a time. That store manager's efforts are undercut when additional stores are opened nearby. Eventually, the point of saturation is reached and cannibalization of existing store sales undermines not just brand health but also manager morale.

None of this need have happened if Starbucks had stayed private and grown at a more controlled pace. To continue to be a premium-priced brand while trading as a public company is very challenging. Tiffany faces a similar problem. That's why many luxury brands like Prada remain family businesses or are controlled by private investors. They can stay small, exclusive and premium-priced by limiting their distribution to selected stores in the major international cities.

Here's proof that we're in a recession: Starbucks is closing 600 stores.

According to the New York Times, "Starbucks said Tuesday that it planned to close another 500 underperforming stores and eliminate as many as 12,000 full- and part-time positions. The company, which now plans to close a total of 600 underperforming stores, will take related charges totaling more than $325 million. Most of the stores, which are company owned, will be closed by the end of the first half of its fiscal year, which ends September 2009, the company said. Starbucks estimated that total pretax charges associated with the closures, including costs associated with severance, would be $328 million to $348 million. The nation’s largest coffee chain said 70 percent of the stores targeted for closure have been open since the beginning of fiscal 2006. The job losses would represent about 7 percent of the company’s global work force."

These closings are clearly fallout from the housing bust. As the Times noted, Starbucks had "aggressively opened stores in areas like California and Florida, which have been hardest hit by the housing downturn. "

The next time economists get together to discuss whether we're really in a recession, they may have to meet somewhere other than the local Starbucks.

It might be closed.

My brother introduced me to Guatemala Antigua coffee from Starbucks while we camped at the cottage the past 2 days. It was obviously so yummy to me that when I got home I headed right to Starbucks to buy a bag and can't wait until morning to brew a cup.

My brother and Janine drove all the way from British Columbia last week and now are at the cottage 2-1/2 hours north of me. Geoff, Robyn, Madeline and I drove there together yesterday and spent the night. It was absolutely wonderful. We had a terrific time... We swam ......... and sat by the lake and fished ....we watched and fed the chipmunk............ served up a yummy bbq dinner. This is my brother and me . We all worked hard together and built a firepit and roasted marshmallows and made Smores......and laughed and told stories and watched the sunset and gazed at the stars. We didn't want to go home!! On the drive we were fascinated by all the Inuckshucks which are stone figurines made high up on the rocks along the way. How special it was to spend this time together...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O: Quote, Profile, Research) is boosting its European presence with plans to license 150 new locations in Britain, France and Germany over the next three years in a deal with UK group SSP, Starbucks said on Thursday.

The coffee shops are to be opened at airports and railway stations and come as the chain looks to offset a slumping U.S. market with overseas growth.

Earlier this month Starbucks opened its first coffee shop in Argentina through a Mexican partnership.

The European deal is Starbucks' largest licensing agreement outside the United States, according to The Wall Street Journal, and could test Europeans' appetite for yet more take-out coffee.

"This collaboration aligns with our strategy to accelerate growth in our international business," Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said in a statement.

"It provides us with a strong platform to further expand the Starbucks brand across Europe."

SSP is a food-retail operator that already runs three airport Starbucks and also operates Burger King and Pizza Hut outlets.

In November Starbucks reported its first quarterly drop in U.S. customer traffic to established stores and the trend has continued.

A couple of times a week I meet with some friends in the morning for coffee. It gives us a chance

A couple of times a week I meet with some friends in the morning for coffee. It gives us a chance to shoot the bull and solve all the world's problems. Earlier this week we decided to break our normal routine and go to Starbucks for our session.

To me coffee is coffee. I have never tried Frapacinno or Cappacino and I don't think I even have them spelled correctly. Just give me some regular ole coffee and I'm content. Don't need anything with stuff on top, or anything that has to be mixed in a blender, and for sure don't put ice in it.

When I got in line at Starbucks a young man was in front of me and he ordered something like a "Starbucks moccha latte iced with a double shot with cream whipped shaken not stirred." He said it so fast I didn't quite make out exactly what he wanted but the smiling woman taking his order didn't miss a beat. She put the concoction together in no time.

My turn - "Good morning!!!! Welcome to Starbucks!!!! How can I help you???"

"I want coffee," I replied.

She paused and with a confused look on her face asked me if I wanted a "tall."

Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure there is a good reason they don't call them small, medium and large, but that is my gauge for drinks. Asking me about tall and short and whatever comes in between is like talking to me about liters and kilometers. I'm just guessing at some sort of conversion into measurements I understand. It was too early. "I want a small coffee."

"What kind of coffee do you want?" She said, the smile now absent.

"Just regular coffee," I said.

"We have a "Wild West Jamaican Dark Roasted Morning Wakeup Call or the Costa Rican Spring Break Restful Medium Blend," she said.

"Just give me the medium thing. A small one."

"OK, I need a short Costa Rican Spring Break Restful Medium," she said to no one in particular but a blond college age girl sprang into action. "That will be $6,359 and 23 cents. Do you want that on your credit card?"

They need to have special classes for ordering at Starbucks. How do all these people know what this stuff is? I'll I know is that you drink coffee and some people put sugar and/or cream in it. I'm Starbucks challenged. I think I'm past learning how to order at Starbucks. So its back to the old hang out where you just ask for coffee. They don't give you options about the size of the thing. You just get a cup and the waitress comes around occasionally and asks if you want it warmed up. They put a chrome mini-pitcher on the table with cream in it and a glass sugar jar with the flappy lid from which it comes out. Its pretty simple and it only costs about a buck.

Incidentally, I notice that Starbucks ends with a buck in the plural form - "BUCKS." Aptly named I say.
