(Cornell Campbell - My Country)

kicking off this weeks selection with a mighty cut from one of Jamaica's finest, Cornell Campbell who has been dropping musical bombs like this for almost 50, (count 'em), years. the man has laid down so many top ranking pieces it beggers belief that he is not an international star.

there at the birth of Jamaican musicology Cornell Cambell began his career at the tender age of 11, (according to the man himself), for none other than Coxsone 'Downbeat the ruler' Dodd. after a financial dispute he moved on to King Edwards, then formed vocal group 'The Sensations' with Jimmy Riley.

back to Dodd as a solo artist and lead singer of 'The Eternals' before hooking up with Bunny Lee in the early 70's...the cat has worked with all of the great Jamaican producers throughout his long career, (which is still going strong), covering almost all of the styles from R&B through to Dancehall so I'm not going to bore you with the 'information' .... i'm just going to throw this one down and leave it to you to decide.

day two of the vocalgroup selection finds us tuning into some 'sufferers' courtesy of Jamaican vocal group The Royals with a mid 70's piece on Roy Cousins' Wambesi Label.

Roy Cousins was not only the producer and Wambesi label owner he was also the Royals lead singer. forming his first vocal group in 1962, (pivotol year for musicology), he went on to form the Royals, (originally called the Tempests), in 1965...recording for, (among others), Coxsone Dodd's Studio 1.

sick of being 'skanked' by producers and label bosses he set up his own in 1971 and this one (Wambesi), in 1974 which attracted many a fine singer, vocal group and deejay evolving into a major force in the 70's and 80's.

the cat at the 'controls' on the dub is none other than Lloyd James. better known as..Prince Jammy...

L’équipe de Footgoal.net tient à présenter ses excuses à ses lecteurs à propos de la coquille qui s’est glissée dans l’article paru sur Johan Boskamp. La rédaction du site essaye d’informer du mieux possible les internautes concernant l’actualité du football belge mais elle reconnaît également que l’erreur est humaine.

Mais qui n'a jamais commis d'erreur(s) Monsieur Charlier? Vous qui y êtes confronté toutes les semaines dans vos analyses avant tout subjectives de la presse sportive belge. Un exercice qui s'avère parfois périlleux. De plus, si l'on y regarde bien, les journaux de référence sont eux aussi sujets aux erreurs humaines.

Et depuis le lancement de son blog (quasiment identique au mien dans sa forme) très amateur pour une chaîne de ce calibre, la RTBF semble vouloir écarter ses concurrents potentiels dans le petit monde virtuel belge. Un coup bien bas mais surtout très mal ajusté étant donné que les deux "sites" ne concourent pas dans la même catégorie. Le blog de la RTBF ne suit d'ailleurs aucun fil conducteur (on boit les affirmations des "sages") alors que footgoal.net s'efforce de renseigner les internautes francophones avides d'informations sur le ballon rond.

[WaterWoman, Portrait II]

Alexandria and I both came down hard with the flu, so we had to cancel our Studio 1 opening reception for Donald Talarico – we will reschedule for early in March and let everybody know – hope to see you then!!!

Disc-jockey, maître-nageur, GO au Club Med’, démarcheur publicitaire, cet Hurlu déluré ne tient décidément pas en place. Après avoir dynamisé le service des fêtes de la commune d’Estaimpuis, le voilà invité à booster le « commercial » de l’Excelsior Mouscron. Jean-Pierre Detremmerie se félicite de son transfert régional. Son tempérament « Speedy » et efficace ne passe pas inaperçu au LOSC où il devient de fil en aiguille l’homme de confiance de Vahid Halilhodzic avant d’accomplir un bout de chemin avec Claude Puel. Adieu les Dogues de la Métropole nordiste, bonjour les Fennecs d’Algérie. Tour à tour compagnon de route de Georges Leekens et de Robert Waseige, Stéphane Pauwels en profite pour parfaire son bagage de team manager en bourlinguant à travers l’Afrique profonde. Mais ses proches lui manquent et il décide alors de rentrer au pays. Avec Albert Cartier, il parvient à former un tandem redoutable à La Louvière, ce qui ne plaît pas à tout le monde. Car au Tivoli, on préfère désormais le fric aux résultats et il en fait le premier les frais. Commence alors une longue traversée du désert pour ce Loup devenu solitaire. Un désert parsemé de chausse-trappes et de traquenards. Toutes les portes ou presque se ferment bizarrement à lui et l’émission Panorama de la VRT ajoute un peu plus à son désarroi. Mais le Steph’ ne va pas tarder à ressusciter. Au grand dam de tous ceux qui lui cherchèrent ses poux, il rebondit sur le Rocher monégasque et ses opinions tranchées font les délices des médias. Une fois pour toutes, il lui tardait de rétablir la vérité. La sienne. La seule.

Je n'ai pas encore eu l'occasion de lire le bouquin mais dès que c'est fait, je vous en touche un mot sur ce blog. A ce sujet, je regrette d'ailleurs qu'ils n'en aient pas parlé davantage hier soir dans Studio1. Je pensais qu'ils aillaient parler des "vérités" de Stéphane. Dire si le bouquin en valait la peine... ou non... Pour l'instant la réponse reste donc en suspend. Dommage...

Bonus :

Juste pour le fun, voici un des grands moments de Pauwels dans Studio 1. Un extrait assez révélateur du gaillard, qui dit tout haut ce que beaucoup pensent tout bas... mais qui a aussi une légère tendance à tout exagérer... au moins un chouillat ;) .

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the "Studio One sound" was virtually synonymous with the sound of ska and rocksteady, and Dodd attracted some of the best of Jamaican talent to his studio and jumpstarted the careers of Bob Marley and the Wailers, The Skatalites, Winston "Burning Spear" Rodney, Lee "Scratch" Perry, The Heptones, Delroy Wilson, Horace Andy, Dennis Brown and Sugar Minott, just to name a few.

In the 1970s, when dub became popular, Dodd tried his hand at it, but couldn't match his competitors. However, he continued successfully to produce artists such as Dennis Alcapone, Johnny Osbourne and Freddie McGregor, who continued to embrace the roots reggae style. He also worked with artists on a style that would become known as dancehall. Beginning in 1979, Studio One had hits with artists including Sugar Minott, Willie Williams, The Lone Ranger, and Michigan & Smiley. In 1979 Dodd left for the United States, resuming the operation of Studio One in Brooklyn, New York, and opening a retail music store, which remained open until his death at age 72 in 2004.

Although major recordings and productions at Studio One slowed drastically towards the end of the 1970's, the riddims originating at Studio One would continue to have a profound influence on reggae. Riddims such as "Real Rock", "Mr Bassie", "Hot Milk", and Satta-A-Masagana among many many others all originated in the house of Studio One, and new roots reggae tunes are still being made over these same riddims. Pick up any Studio One anthology, especially on the fabulous Souljazz Record label, and you are sure to hear 5 or 6 riddims that you thought originated with Sizzla, Capleton, Luciano, or Berres Hammond. His studio equipment consisted of a basic 4 track board so the sound suffers a bit on most of his earlier stuff, but it's still great enough to put a chill up my back every time time I hear one. Hell, Alton Ellis' "I'm still in Love" was even the "first dance" song at our wedding.

Coxsone Dodd was born this week in 1932. I honestly never go a single day without listening to a song he produced.

Jamaican music has been pressed on vinyl 45s (pictured for you youngsters) from its beginning on up to the present day. No respected dancehall dj would be seen spinning anything but a 45, even Phillys own Solomonic Sound crew. If you wanted the freshest riddims straight from Jamaica, vinyl was the only way to get them. I've got crates of them in my basement now. But according to this great article from London's Guardian, those days are over.

A quote from UK DJ David Rodigan:

In a nutshell, vinyl has been eliminated by the people who play the music to the public. The key players - and by that I mean the sound system selectors that people go to see every weekend, who can make or break a song - are no longer dealing with it in any shape or form and have all switched to CD. Now if someone wants to send me a song, they just email it to me as an MP3. This process has been gradual, but it's now absolute.

this weeks selection is yet another from the Studio1 stable, Jamaica's premier production house. progressive and innovative it reflected owner and musicologist Coxsone Dodd's love of 'the new' in every sense.

for themusicologist this piece feels like hope and, (synchronistically), has a 'better must come' flavour. driving, determined and focused .... 2008 in a nutshell !!!

so for all the 2007 sufferers, (and I know there's many), consign last year to history, mark it down to experience and Move On Up with this slice of musical connection and communication.

Wishing all of you the very best for the coming year and thanking you for your support in 2007. BIG things a gwaan in 2008, keep it locked, loaded and musical.
