I have witnessed something… something quite…

A librarian suggested a word for it—ineffable. Not many people knew this word, she said, probably Shakespeare did not know it either, seeing that he used ‘beggar description’ instead.

I confess that I too have only just learnt about the word ‘ineffable’. I am not sure whether it is the right one for what I have witnessed. Although I know exactly what the thing is, I am sorry to say, I cannot pinpoint it in a word. But I can show it to you. I can tell you the story about it, so that you may see it for yourself and find out whether ‘ineffable’ is the right word for it.

NONI GIA

Noni GIA is an exciting new product from bHIP Global that is a blend of powdered Tahitian noni juice, pineapple juice and grape juice. The word GIA comes from the word "Energía", which means "Energy" in Spanish. Noni GIA supports your immune system by delivering a remarkable supply of antioxidants to help rid the body of harmful free radicals. It increases both energy and physical performance.

Noni GIA is an organic powdered product that is conveniently available in sachet format.

Temperatures in Tahiti range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius year round, guaranteeing good harvests. Tahiti is far from the corrupting influences of global pollution. The water is fresh and pure, the winds blow clean air, and the soil is rich from tropical vegetation and the minerals of volcanic activity. This pristine land provides an ideal environment to grow the perfect noni fruit.

NONI FRUIT

Pacific Islanders have enjoyed the health benefits of noni fruit for over two thousand years. Without any sophisticated or advanced technologies, they have relied on the noni plant for many medicinal uses. The modern medical world has taken note of the many benefits of the noni plant.

Through centuries of use as a folk medicine, the noni plant has been linked but not limited to the following:

IMMUNE SYSTEM
Strengthens the immune system and builds resistance against disease.

BLOOD CIRCULATION, TISSUES, AND CELLS
Delivers powerful antioxidants, which help to rid the body of harmful free radicals and to increase energy.

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Supports the natural function of the digestive system, improving nutrient absorption.

ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTIFUNGAL
The presence of active compounds such as anthraquinones and terpenes helps the body to fight harmful bacteria and fungus.

Agora chove torrencialmente no Guarujá!

Achei o filme no mínimo louco.

So I was just googling images. Cause I was trying to put album covers on all of my songs on itunes and i came across the image above. I clicked on it to find out my teachers from when I danced Tahitian were interviewed by a magazine. I danced with the group for a good 5 years, but I had danced since I was about 8. Polynesian dancing became and essential part of my life, which I miss so much. The practices, the people, culture, competitions I miss it all. The rush of going out and dancing like you have never danced before its great (for lack of better words). Right about when I had to stop dancing they started up this new concept, theme and show called Amerikanesia. It was about our story. The story of our group, the dancers, who we were. I was apart of the first original show before it got reformed and made it big. With the improved form of the show they were asked to perform in Vegas at Planet Hollywood. The group is doing big things, not that it wasn't before. I am so proud of them. We faced adversity with this show because it was so different. I am glad they are getting recognition for being bold and going beyond the traditional norm.

GOOD LUCK NONOSINA!!! I love and miss you all.

I'm operating under a very strict personal rule that I cannot possibly buy any more books until I finish all the novels I have in waiting -- and Frangipani has been sitting in my room for more than a year.

Vaite's story follows Materena, a Tahitian woman who struggles in her relationships with her daughters and two sons. The novel is set on the island and is sprinkled with French sayings and cultural references, but I didn't have much trouble grappling with them. And I didn't have much trouble grappling with the book's "larger meaning," either -- it's all about mothers and daughters. Materena's daughter Leilani is free-spirited and strong-willed, usually pretty unwilling to take her mother's opinions seriously. While Materena is constantly struggling to bestow her womanly wisdom upon Leilani, her daughter is resisting as hard as she can.

In the end, of course, Materena and Leilani reach an understanding of what it means to grow up and let go -- of each other, of the past, of their troubles. If this all sounds a bit and overdramatic, it actually isn't. The story is light and airy as an island breeze, weaved as it is with Vaite's tender voice. The book is told mostly as a string of anecdotes with an underlying plot tying them all together, and this was mostly successful.

That being said, I struggled a bit to submerge myself in the story. While I liked Materena and felt for her as she struggled to be a good mother to her children, a good wife to her husband and a good listener for her friends and family, I felt a little out-of-place as I viewed the setting as a whole. The Tahiti that Vaite describes in her novel (and probably in real life?) is very matriarchal -- and the absence of men plays more of a role in the book than the presence of any man, save Leilani's father Pito and boyfriend Hotu. And while I was enchanted with Materena and her aunties, cousins and mamas and felt the deep bond between them, it was still hard for me to really . . . feel something for them. I did tear up at the ending, but overall I felt the book lacked a certain emotional spark to connect me as a reader.

Two additional books by Vaite follow Materena Mahi and her family, though I don't think I'll be rushing out to grab them. Decent as a stand-alone novel, but not really sure how Materena's tale will stand up as a series. Perhaps we'll see.

[caption id="attachment_934" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Abraham Lincoln's Letter of 15 February 1864"][/caption]

I came across this interesting letter of Abraham Lincoln's, which is currently being auctioned off at Sotheby's. It is currently valued at between U.S. $250,000 and $350,000. I really enjoyed seeing it!

Since I teach cursive writing, I'm always interested in looking at handwriting samples. I showed this lettter to my daughter to see if she could read it. She could read some of it. However, some certain specific flaws, paticularly with proportion of letters, make certain bit hard to read (especially if you're not used to deciphering handwriting, as most teachers are used to doing).

Here are some examples of problems in Lincoln's cursive writing. Most d''s are missing their tall stems (for example, look at the words understand and husband's, both in the second line of the body of the letter). His y's at the end of words look almost like u's with a scratchy tail (see the word enemy in the fourth line of the body). Most of his l's are no taller than his other small letters (see the word helped at the end of the third line of the body, where the l should be as tall as the h, but intead, barely surpasses the e in height).

Lincoln's slant, however, is good (correct amount of forward slant).

This particular sample of cursive writing would not pass my third-grade class. However, it might not be his "best" writing--few of us use our "best" writing on a daily basis, as it's too time-consuming.

The reason I'm so particular in teaching handwriting (I'm sure some of you are wondering) is that in our American school, the teachers often change from year-to-year. Sometimes we never know who we'll get until almost the last minute, or even what country they will be from. (We've had teachers from English-speaking counries all around the world.) Often the teachers from other countries don't even know cursive (much less American cursive), and sometimes the younger teachers now arriving from America don't know cursive either! So of course they don't give their classes any instruction in it, nor do they use it on the board. So whatever cursive my kids get in Grade 3 is often all they will get, ever. That's why I teach them well in Grade 3, and get them to a standard that will serve them the rest of their lives before they leave my class.

William Shakespeare

[caption id="attachment_929" align="alignnone" width="224" caption="William Shakespeare"][/caption]

Much of the Arab World seems to me (an American) to be obsessed with Shakespeare! Yes, I do think there is a place for Shakespeare in the literature curriculum, but I think it is being entirely overdone. I think one or (certainly not more than three) Shakespeare plays should be included in the curriculum, but other time should be spent on more interesting and valuable literature.

I spoke with some British friends I have who told me that British children are started on reading Shakespeare at age 11! When I asked what for, one of them finally told me that knowledge of Shakespeare is used as an adult mainly to impress other adults. OK, I'm American, and I find much of the language terribly hard to understand. I really can't see it being useful to most people to learn much of this sort of antiquidated language. Yet, throughout the Arab World, so many university programs seem to focus on extensive reading of Shakespeare!

About fifteen years ago, I had a friend from Libya. He went on and on about how when he was in school, they had performed Shakespeare's plays in Arabic, using all the correct classical Arabic endings for words (as opposed to using the local dialet of Arabic). People in my present country have told me similar things.

Where I live now, I often have country nationals who have earned university degrees in English (as a second or third language) talk to me about how they read a lot of Shakespeare in university. At the same time, their command of ordinary English vocabulary is often lacking. Some of them cannot write clear English sentences. Wouldn't the time spend studying Shakespeare be better spent in English composition classes, and/or reading literature that uses language currently used, particularly when they are subsequently in jobs requiring a good command of English?

Much of the Arab World seems to me (an American) to be obsessed with Shakespeare! Yes, I do think there is a place for Shakespeare in the literature curriculum, but I think it is being entirely overdone. I think one or (certainly not more than three) Shakespeare plays should be included in the curriculum, but other time should be spent on more interesting and valuable literature.
