I was in Sarawak for a week- 3 nights in Sibu, 2 nights in Bintulu and the final night was in Kuching. Borong kek lapis & ikan terubuk masin sampai tak ingat dunia, nasib baik MAS tak charge extra. Tikar Sarawak aku suruh tauke kedai tu poskan terus sampai depan rumah, sebab berat dia saja dah 15 kilo! Heheh...

Sempat jugak singgah Sarikin, tapi duit dalam wallet dah nyawa-nyawa ikan masa tu. Didn't expect that there will be sponsored transport to Sarikin (thanks to the people of Yayasan Sarawak :D), that was why my wallet was not prepared. Haha... Nasib baik takde ATM kat situ, kalo tak mau bankrap aku. Semua ada kat sana kecuali mak bapak je- bak kata ex-bos aku yang dah 4/5 thn bermaustatin kat sana.

Ex-bos? Nash, En. N adalah teramat sihat, dan masih single. Heheh. And still super-talkative, like dolu-dolu. Heheh.

But I still listen to music when I can, and recently I heard one of my favourite albums this year so far. Here you have it, thanks to Cam from dinodance.

A bunch of great tunes here, held up by a distinctive voice and interesting instrumentation - Rook is a very consistent album, albeit a bit on the short side. Here's 'Rooks':

I was telling you in my last music-related post that I'd discovered an amazing 80s band - well I don't feel like discussing them anymore, and you should know them anyway. For the record, they're Talk Talk, and if you haven't heard their last 2-3 albums yet, you should.

Also like I was telling you, I saw Testament and Kreator. The former were the definite highlight for me, perhaps because I'd already seen Kreator live in 2003, but also cos Testament put on a crushing show. And to top it off, I caught Alex Skolnick's pick! Fuck yeah! Some would say I got lucky, but I'm pretty sure it was my destiny to catch that pick.

I also went to see Metallica, and they thoroughly destroyed. A very balanced setlist with nothing but songs from the first 5 albums. My fave song of the night was probably '...and Justice for All', such a bone-breaking epic - and who would've guessed they would ever play it live again?

Even though they haven't released anything amazing in the past ~20 years, 'tallica have stayed at the top - maybe part of the reason is they've always been an asskicking live band.

Die Handlung ist recht einfach: Dana Halter, eine gehörlose junge Frau, wird nach dem Überfahren eines Stopschildes von der Polizei angehalten und nach der Personenkontrolle ins Gefängnis gebracht. Dort kommt heraus, daß unter ihrem Namen eine Vielzahl von Vergehen und Verbrechen begangen worden sind. Der polizeiliche Irrtum klärt sich auf, aber die in ihrem Stolz und Selbstbewusstsein tief gekränkte Dana begibt sich zusammen mit ihrem Freund Bridger, einem Spieleentwickler, auf die Suche nach dem "Dieb" ihrer Identität. Nach den ersten zwei Teilen läuft der Rest des Buches auf das Zusammentreffen der Gegner hinaus. Mehr will ich vom Inhalt jetzt aber nicht verraten.

Gottseidank widersteht Boyle der Versuchung, die Aufklärung der Personenverwechselung im Gefängnis länger hinauszuschieben. So sitzt Dana von Freitag bis Montag ein, unter Alkoholikerinnen und Prostituierten, die sie nicht versteht und gegen die sie sich nicht wehren kann. Diese wenigen Tage reichen aber völlig, um sie zutiefst zu demütigen, ihr ihre Würde zu nehmen und sie hasserfüllt in die Welt zurück zu schicken.

Boyle läßt des öfteren den Zufall spielen, wenn er seine Geschichte fortsetzen will, einiges ist für mich schlicht und einfach etwas arg weit hergeholt: der notorische Identitätsräuber will ausgerechnet an den Ort zurück, an dem er vor seiner Karriere lebte (und wo er im Grunde sicher damit rechnen muss, früher oder später erkannt zu werden). Auch das Dana und Bridger nie ernsthaft erwägen, die Polizei einzuschalten, obwohl sie wissen, wie gefährlich ihr Feind ist, ist meiner Meinung nach nicht besonders glaubhaft. Stattdessen verfolgen sie ihn über mehrere Wochen durch die gesamte USA.

Von den dargestellten Personen zeichnet Boyle den "Dieb" William Peck am plastischsten, seine beiden Verfolger sind deutlich weniger strukturiert. Warum Boyle mit Dana eine Gehörlose schildert, ist mir nicht klar, zum Gang der Handlung trägt die Taubheit Danas nichts bei und die Darstellung der Schwierigkeiten Gehörloser in der Öffentlichkeit beschränken sich im Grunde auf die Schilderung der zurückschreckenden Reaktion der Mitmenschen: "Huch, was ist denn mit der los, die ist ja komisch". Vielleicht war es sogar eher sein Anliegen, zu zeigen, daß Dana selbst ihr Leben als Gehörlose annimmt und diese Taubheit nicht als Behinderung oder Verlust sieht.

So plätschert der Roman dahin, unterbrochen von einzelnen Episoden, an denen sich die beiden Parteien mal (räumlich) nahe kommen, bis dann gegen Schluss der lang erwartete Show-Down stattfindet, der nur Verlierer zurückläßt. Am stärksten, um das auch zu sagen, fand ich persönlich den ersten Teil, der die Verhaftung Danas und ihre Zeit im Gefängnis schildert. Aber das ist ja nun auch bezeichnenderweise eine Konstellation, die gut in einer seiner Kurzgeschichten gepasst hätte...

Facit: Diesem Buch Boyles fehlen die skurrilen Einfälle, die seine Kurzgeschichten so lesenwert machen. So ist es ein "normaler" Roman (Krimi), nicht besser oder schlechter als viele andere, die zwischen Buchdeckel gepresst sind. Ein schnell zu lesendes Sommerbuch.....

All was proceding well, there was a bit of glen hansard and marketa irglova playing away, then there was the joyful bing of an e-mail to tell me that i had a fax at reception. I wondered whether to not reply, as this would have entailed them calling me about the e-mail about the fax, but decided that the exercise would be beneficial... I came back and on ITunes Mark Hollis was playing the track "Inside looking out"from his one and only album, Mark Hollis.

I am not a Mark Hollis expert, but here goes. He used to be in Talk Talk, his brother is the Eddie of Eddie and the hot rods! erm thats about as far as i go... Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden, Colour of Spring and Laughing Stock contain some of my favourite pieces of music. He released his solo album a couple of years after the demise of talk talk.  I bought it and immediately the sparse stretched melodies and instrumentation just caught something magical and unique.

I and iTunes shuffle had forgotten about this for some time and then this afternoon it came on... It is such a stunning vivid piece of work.. It shouldn't lift your spirits the way it does...Sadly i just checked up on Amazon and it is going new for £2.98!!! methinks an early christmas shop might need to be done, this album needs inflicting on others.

Anyway back to the Nokia manual ho hum.

Damia is growing fast. All her pants dah singkat2. Dislike skirts. There was this one time, during a cousin's wedding, she wore ala-ala flower girl gown, think she managed to tahan for half an hour maybe, then she asked me to change to pants. We weren't even out of the house yet, dah nak tukar baju. On makan, nowadays, susah! I've run out of ideas to make makan time interesting. Tapi kalau junk food, laju! Hmm...  all 2-year-olds are like that, kan? Ke anak aku je? Communication skills- berkembang dengan pantasnya! She can now form a complete sentence. Good at putting 2 and 2 together. Example, I called Syifa ultra-baby, she immediately pointed to herself and said 'ini pulak ultra-farhana'. :p huhu... we would be the ultra-mama and ultra-abah. We are the sepupu belah tok tiri of the Ultraman's family la. We were sometimes amazed and tickled to laughter by words or stories that came out from her. Bakat sebagai seorang drama queen pun dah ada. Satu lagi, pantang nampak kedai buku, kena singgah. Must at least buy one book or magazine. Everywhere she goes around the house, she has to be surrounded with few of her selected soft toys and books. Tiap-tiap kali nak tukar tempat, semua 'harta' dia tu kena bawak sama. Naik atas bilik, kena bawak, satgi turun bawah, kena bawak lagi. Kekadang tensi aku nak ngangkut semua. But hopefully, this interest in books will last and benefit her in the long run.

Syifa is already 6 mos+ and about to pecah gigi. Started on solids a couple of weeks ago. Menu: rice + carrot/ sweet corns/ peas with serbuk ikan bilis goreng tanpa minyak. Any ideas on menu for a 6-mo-old? No longer breastfeeding due to no supply. Aku stress, sebab tu takde susu kot. Dah pandai meniarap, baru nak pandai pusing balik. Nampak mcm ada tendency nak jadi fussy-eater. Mcm abah dia kot, haha! Friendly, likes to smile. But will mengamuk if you let her get too sleepy. Still able to wear her pantang/ new-born clothes. This one I think will be petite like her aunt (somi's younger sister). But still too early to tell actually, kan? Diaper, still size S. She can now grab and hold small stuffs such as her rattle or bottle. Drools a lot. Sebab nak tumbuh gigi baru kot? Ke sebab ngidam caramel pudding kat Tun Mahathir's The Loft? Huhu... masa pregnant dulu teringin, tapi tak sempat nak pi. She becomes excited everytime Damia sings to her. Like she can't wait to grow up so that she can play with kakak. Not much to tell about Syifa, because what she does everyday is the normal baby stuff: makan, tido, mandi, main. :)

Work: Will be going to Sarawak on 29/6 to 5/7. I don't know how am I going to survive a week away from family. Memang boleh sebenarnya, tapi sakit sikit la. Feel guilty especially to the baby. Kata mak aku, 'anak baru nak kenal mak, dah kena tinggal lak'. Hmm... what to do, 'saya yang menurut perintah'. Hmm... talking (writing?) about work, I just don't know where to begin. I joined the government with hope that I can go home on time, the workload is ok-ok, bla bla bla. Whatever that we always thought of the gov. servants-lah kan. Balik on time, keje tak banyak, kalo tak abis bole sambung esok, balik pukul 4.30... pukul 4 dah kemas meja tunggu nak clock-out, cuti banyak dan lain-lain lagi. On the 'cuti banyak' part, true. But the rest, so not TRUE! Huhu... but I'm coping. Like people said, stress is good. Keeps you on your feet. Helps you to improve and evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. I like the company that I am with now. I'm taking whatever that comes my way positively. And I hope my patience will pay. (Ayat-ayat nak sedapkan hati sendiri nih... ahaks!). Anyways, aku harap aku tabah seminggu kat Sarawak nanti.

I recently finished writing a full review of Rook for State and it is a beautiful album. So well thought-out, so meticulously produced that you get the sense that some enchanted world has been bottled up and delivered to you with eloquence and a focused restraint. Considering the vision behind it, it could have easily been excessively lavish but one of its many achievements is the way the arrangements are all kept remarkably light. This album will still be highly regarded long after the end-of-year lists have faded from memory.

เพื่อนคนหนึ่งที่เราออกจะแปลกใจเมื่อรู้ว่าเขามักจะหาเวลาว่างไปปฏิบัติธรรมอยู่เสมอ เพราะเห็นว่าเขาเล่นดนตรี เรียนศิลปะ และนิยมงานปาร์ตี้ ได้ยื่นหนังสือ "Dhamma Design : หนังสือธรรมะแนวทดลอง" และ "แดนสนทนา : A Summer Night Dialouge" ส่งให้

เป็นหนังสือธรรมที่ดูแปลกตาดีทีเดียว ชื่อคนทำที่อยู่ในเล่มก็ชวนแปลกใจ เนื้อหาจะเน้นไปทางสายวัดป่าที่เน้นการปฏิบัติธรรม การเข้าใจในความคิดตนเอง และอิงกับธรรมชาติ ไิม่หนักจนเกินความเข้าใจและ ไม่ออกแนวโฆษณาชวนเชื่อเหมือนที่เราขยาดจากหนังสือพยายามสอนธรรมะที่เคยอ่านตอนเด็กๆ แม้จะมีเนื้อหาบางจุดชวนให้รู้สึกอยากจะขัดอยากจะแย้งบ้าง แต่โดยรวมก็นับว่าน่าสนใจ รูปแบบไม่ได้นำเนื้อหาแต่มีส่วนช่วยให้หยิบมาอ่านได้ง่ายขึ้นมากกว่า ภาพประกอบข้างในหลายชุดที่เราคิดว่ามันช่วยขับเน้นบรรยากาศของความสงบในธรรมชาติและเนื้อหาธรรมะของเล่มให้ชัดเจน

ธรรมะกับธรรมชาตินั้นมันก็เป็นเรื่องเดียวกันนั่นแหละ คิดว่าความสงบที่เราพบเมื่อตอนได้ไปนั่งอยู่แถวตีนดอยเชียงดาว กับความสงบของการปฏิบัติธรรมคงไม่ได้ไกลห่างจากกันนัก

ตอนนี้กำลังเซ็งๆกับทีวีบางรายการที่สอนธรรมะแบบแปลกๆ ดูยัดเยียดๆและเหมือนกำลังล้างสมองกันมากกว่า จริงๆแล้วรูปแบบก็เป็นแค่รูปแบบ อยู่ที่ว่ามันเป็นไปในทางสร้างสรรค์หรือไม่และยังคงสาระที่แท้ของหลักธรรมไว้ได้มากกว่าหรือเปล่า รู้สึกว่าตัวเองคิดมากไปหรือเปล่าที่มานั่งสงสัยว่ารายการธรรมะพวกนั้นเป็นธรรมะจริงแค่ไหน แต่เห็นเค้าเอาเด็กๆมาท่องปาวๆในคำแปลกๆ และมุ่งหวังว่าจะต้องได้ไปสวรรค์ ก็กังวลถึงเด็กๆที่เริ่มต้นจากมุมมองทางนั้นน่ะ

Today I started my working day only to discover my BT broadband connection had entirely vanished.

I discovered Talk Talk had somehow hijacked my telephone service so I could make calls, but not receive any, and there was no broadband connection at all.

Talk Talk had stolen my phone.

It's called 'slamming' in the language of the mentally retarded wierdos of the electronic sub-culture. It is illegal and a crime.

I spent a solid five hours and came close to having a heart attack at the immense difficulty of getting anything done about it and recovering my line from the thieves.

It meant I got absolutely no work done at all. I also feel like checking in to the nearest secure psychiatric hospital after spending the entire day in the hands of 'customer advisors’ and 'call centres' of various kinds with BT and Talk Talk, OfCOM and the frequent foray around the globe to Hindustani speakers in India, a continent or so distant from here.

If this sounds mad, that's because it is. More later.

Ok to be fair from whers I live I can see between 2 and 6 wireless routers and none of them are reading over 50% so maybe it's "improvements" at the local exchange, I do live in the backside of beyond, a place called Thorne, but hey it used to be a good connection, over 90% all the time.

What else? the Nectar problem got sorted, only took 6 month :), Talktalk are still throttling torrents which combined with this slow speed in general just might make me consider a change of provider. And Kubuntu 8.04 just rocks :)

And then watched the performance at YouTube.

Fell in love with the song. Never liked that song before. But after listening to his version, I can't keep the song out of my head. Masuk toilet pun nak nyanyi jugak. Or at least hum. Huhu. The toilet cleaner caught me humming the song (Cook's version) while I was doing my business in the toilet today. Sabo jelah! :p

I don't watch the show, but have been reading Ziah's weekly update on it. Tak dan nak tgk, bila nak tgk, ada je benda lain nak kena buat. Heh... nak jadi high-performing mother/ wife la katakan. Kat opis, nak jadi high-performing employee pulak. Stress. Gila STRESS. Terencat-akal-kind-of-STRESS. Heh.

Parents were not home last weekend. Bila mak takde, faham-faham je la. Takhta ratu dapur diturunkan kat akak la. Huhu. Inilah hasilnya. Do enjoy. The pics.

Attended the celebration of KWAP's first anniversary last week. The theme was Red Roses Black Baccara. Black baccara is actually known as black rose. The black baccara rose is more blackish in color before the bloom begins to open. As it blooms, the color changes to a deep rich shade of blueberry/ blackberry/ burgundy.

Dinner was held at Nikko Hotel. The food was ok. Their wild mushroom soup was the best! Rasa macam nak minta tambah je.

The performance was ok too. VE, Noryn Aziz and a guy with a Sudirman's voice. Noryn Aziz was great. Powerful voice. Was a bit sceptical actually when I heard that she was part of the entertainment for the night. But, she really can sing. And very professional too.

The last pic, the red roses, was the table centrepiece that I took home dengan selamba badaknya.
