Hollywood parece não ter se cansado de "inspirar-se" (para alguns, simplesmente copiar) a criatividade sombria dos filmes de terror japoneses. Desde que The Ring marcou época em 2002, tirando do quase anonimato o diretor Gore Verbinski, em uma refilmagem do japonês Ringu, a lista de histórias de terror adaptadas nos Estados Unidos não parou de crescer. Até Walter Salles chegou a Hollywood em um projeto assim: Dark Water, de 2005, com Jennifer Connelly, uma refilmagem do filme Honogurai Mizu no Soko Kara de Hideo Nakata (o mesmo diretor de Ringu). Pois The Eye é mais um exemplo do quanto Hollywood anda necesitando da criatividade nipônica. O filme estrelado por Jessica Alba é uma versão repaginada do original, Jian Gui, de 2002, dirigido por Oxide Pang Chun e Danny Pang em um produção de Hong Kong e Singapura. Achei a refilmagem fraca, um bocado de "mais do mesmo". Talvez se eu não tivesse assistido mais nenhum filme do gênero... mas tendo visto vários outros, inclusive os citados anteriormente, me pareceu um esforço despropositado para ganhar uns trocados garantidos - afinal, os fãs do gênero assistem de tudo, não importa se é algo ruim ou não.

A HISTÓRIA: Sydney Wells (Jessica Alba) é uma música virtuosista que ficou cega quando tinha 5 anos de idade. Ela se acostumou a viver sem a visão, aguçando os demais sentidos. Vive sozinha e tem uma vida independente, até que recebe um transplante de córneas por iniciativa da irmã, Helen Wells (Parker Posey). Durante a sua recuperação da cirurgia, Sydney começa a ver imagens estranhas e irreais. Segundo o médico Paul Faulkner (Alessandro Nivola) ela está passando por uma fase de resistência psicológica, mas até o científico passa a duvidar deste diagnóstico quando Sydney se envolve em estranhos acontecimentos.

VOLTANDO À CRÍTICA (SPOILER - aviso aos navegantes que boa parte do texto à seguir conta momentos importantes do filme, por isso recomendo que não siga lendo quem ainda não assistiu a The Eye): Ok, o filme tem alguma ironia dispersa aqui e ali, o que me fez até dar uma relaxada. Por exemplo, na hora em que o médico pergunta a sua paciente de forma irônica se ela está vendo "pessoas mortas", em uma clara referência a frase que virou o cartão-de-visitas de The Sixth Sense. Mas fora essa "piadinha", o filme é um amontoado de situações-comum e frases mais que esperadas em filmes do gênero.

Jessica Alba está bem, ainda que me irrite um pouco a sua preocupação em estar sempre "piscando" para demonstrar um naturalismo maior da personagem que "acabou de fazer um transplante de córneas". Os demais atores também estão ok, em nenhum papel que realmente vá mais do que o estágio médio de profundidade. Ok, ninguém espera personagens mais trabalhados em filmes assim - exceto por Dark Water e alguns outros, talvez. O que se espera são sustos dos bons e efeitos idem.

Bem, os sustos também são poucos... pelo menos se você já assistiu mais de 10 filmes do gênero, não é pego de maneira tão fácil por figuras distorcidas que se jogam na frente da câmera. Também algo que me irrita um pouco em filmes do gênero: porque diabos os tais fantasmas não verbalizam o que eles querem? Ficam nesse jogo mudo de sustos até que o "perseguido" perceba o que eles querem. Ai, não tenho tanta paciência não com os fantasmas. :)

Talvez alguém ache o filme interessante como passatempo, mas eu não achei nem isso. Fraco, realmente. Fiquei curiosa para ver o original, que talvez seja mais ousado na direção, pelo menos. Aliás, a dupla David Moreau e Xavier Palud fizeram, na minha opinião, um filme bem modesto... poderiam ter se arriscado mais na direção.

No mais, sei que os fãs do terror vão me jogar pedras, mas é inevitável perguntar: (SPOILER - não leia se não viu o filme ainda) se todo o propósito de Ana Christina Martinez (Fernanda Romero) era mesmo que Sydney impedisse a morte de várias pessoas, o que teria acontecido se ela conseguisse as informações da sua doadora só um dia depois? Ou várias horas depois? Ok, ok, eu sei que os roteiros de filmes assim não devem ter lógica, necessariamente, mas sei lá... custa ter um pouco mais de sentido? Enfim... quero deixar claro que não foi nem a falta de lógica que me incomodou, mas que os sustos foram poucos e fracos. E o final... mais artificial impossível.

NOTA: 4,5.

OBS DE PÉ DE PÁGINA: Algo que o filme me incomodou um pouco: essa mensagem de que algum órgão transplantado pode carregar uma certa "memória celular" da pessoa anterior... Fiquei pensando até que ponto isso não pode afetar doações. Procurei informações a respeito (recomendo este texto e este outro para começar) e parece realmente que existiram casos de pessoas que relataram fatos que só poderiam ter vindo como "herança" da pessoa de quem elas receberam determinado órgão - normalmente coração ou pulmão. Mas existe muita divergência entre os cientistas sobre isso. E, claro está, não ocorreria algo assim como se vê no filme, com um transplante de córneas e uma série de "visões" que a pessoa passaria a ter. De qualquer forma, é um tema interessante - ainda que perigoso porque é cercado por mais dúvidas que certezas.

O filme foi bem nas bilheterias... até o dia 6 de abril ele tinha arrecadado pouco mais de US$ 31,3 milhões apenas nos Estados Unidos. Nada mal. E a cifra também comprova que Hollywood pode continuar fazendo refilmagens do tipo que sempre terá uma boa bilheteria para os filmes - especialmente se tiver alguém como Jessica Alba na frente do elenco.

Falando da atriz, além dela e das pessoas já citadas, faz parte do grupo de atores em cena Rade Serbedzija como o maestro Simon McCullough; a veterana Rachel Ticotin como Rosa Martinez, mãe de Ana Christina; e Obba Babatundé como o médico Dr. Haskins.

O filme conseguiu a nota 5,3 dos usuários do site IMDb. Os críticos que tem textos publicados no Rotten Tomatoes dedicaram 59 textos negativos e 16 positivos para o filme.

Curioso que o filme acumulou dois prêmios até agora: melhor cartaz de filme de terror no Golden Trailer Awards; e melhor atriz de filmes de terror para Jessica Alba no Teen Choice Awards.

Para não dizer que Jessica Alba não se esforçou para o papel, conta a lenda que ela se preparou com aulas de violino por seis meses, além de ter recebido aulas básicas de braile - só não vi muito o que isso fez diferença no filme, mas tudo bem. :)

O filme foi rodado em Los Angeles - sequencia inicial; em Vancouver, no Canadá; e em duas cidades do Novo México: Albuquerque e Isleta Pueblo.

CONCLUSÃO: Mais uma refilmagem de um filme de terror nipônico, esta produção acaba por não mostrar nada de novo - nem na direção e nem nos sustos. Acaba se mostrando fraco para os fãs do gênero que já estão acostumados com outras histórias similares. Ainda assim, não deixa de ser curioso o "mote" do filme, ou seja, a ainda não esclarecida questão da "memória celular" que passaria de doador para receptor de transplantes. Para quem gosta do gênero, talvez seja um passatempo. Para os que não são muito fãs, será um filme um tanto chatinho.

SUGESTÃO DE LEITORES: Mais um filme comentado anteriormente por um dos bons leitores deste blog. The Eye foi comentado por Elizeu há vários meses... aqui está o comentário, meu bom Elizeu. Finalmente assisti ao filme. Jessica Alba está bem, realmente, mas achei que ela não fez nada assim... "excepcional". Talvez para uma tarde chuvosa e sem nada melhor para ver, ele valha a pena. hehehehehehehe. Mas quero ver você aqui comentando sobre o filme também. Fiquei curiosa mesmo é para ver o original. Um abraço para ti e para os demais leitores que sugerem filmes por aqui - prometo continuar assistindo o que vocês indicam dentro do possível. :)

The fight explanation was one of the most complex things I've heard. I thought Vashj was something, but Kael'thas is a very tough fight. Took a lot of concentration.

We wiped quite a few times tonight. The first few were due to transition problems as far as I could tell--we still had the Phase 2 weapons up when Phase 3 started, and we never did get all the adds down before Phase 4 started. All in all, it was a great learning experience, but it's really intimidating looking at that guy.

Of course everyone running up and hugging him pre-fight was a great stress reliever.

Anyway, the first thing I thought when I saw him was..."Epic!" And yes, the fight was epic. Scared the piss out of me when the first add (who acts surprisingly like that guy from AQ20!) started eyeing me.

In phase 2, I found it difficult to find the staff to loot. It's a little hard to see against the floor. But I got it okay, and it certainly helped my damage. Upped my gear rating too...L175 items tend to do that. At least temporarily lol.

I got a Lionseye today, so I have officialy started socketing for Arcane! Very happy to finally get around to doing that; should be at 14k+ mana soon.

Most eventful event: I ran Mag's after over a month of trying to pug. We took a bunch of ppl from our TK raid, threw in some overgeared puggers like Annoyance (BT shadow priest) Envvy (T6 pally tank with Thunderfury!) Umbrae...and rocked that guy. Burning him down by keeping the channels on him more during Blast Wave interrupts makes that fight very fast.

I didn't get any gear from Mag's of course, but I am now:

Incidentally with that kill I have officially downed at least one boss in EVERY end-game instance in BC. (3 in ZA, 2 (the 2nd and 3rd) in BT, and 1 in Hyjal). Exciting business.

I am home again for yet another weekend and I'm starting to freak out. Since I only have access to a computer once a week - on weekends - and I only watch anime that time (not to get behind my schedule too much) I don't know anything about anything that's going on anymore. And as if that's not enough, several of the animes that I currently watch and love are ending this (or the previous week) such as To LOVE-Ru, World Destruction, Code Geass R2 (ah, the sorrow) and D.Gray-man and if that doesn't make you shed a tear than there's something wrong with you. That's all on that matter.

Under the week we have watched a few movies again, starting with the great but not scary horror flick The Eye (yes, they finally let us rent it after four weeks); we also saw Stardust and I later on came to the point where I finally watched the whole The Bourne Identity (I would like to add another , but that's a secret between you and me.), now I just have to see The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Or maybe "have" it a wrong choice of word? Anyway, you know what I mean so keep yourself from exploding (or imploding) and hopefully we'll see eachother again next week. ^^

Just after a meeting when everything was still fine, I suddenly realized that I couldn't read my Excelsheet anymore; there were zickzack lines and stuff. I told J to please immediately drive me to the ER of the eye clinic. During that drive I was shaking and so so scared. I can't even describe it, but the zickzack lines worsened because of the sun I guess and I really was almost numb. When we arrived at the only too familiar hospital I took out my contact lens (and let if fall on the ground because of nervosity) and realized that the symptoms had gone immediately. I then took out my right lens and put it into the left eye: everything seemed still fine. I guess it was the fresh new contact lens that must have been damaged. What a relief I tell you! What a scary experience!

• Protagonist (often a cute girl) gets into a new situation or tries out a new thing (like, technology).
• Triggered by this, visually scary stuff starts to happen, involving ghosts/dead people/creepy children with big eyes/whatever. Although the protagonist always comes out ok, (s)he gets repeatedly really freaked out, yet is believed by few.
• Starts to investigate, generally with a cute member of the opposite sex (who does believe).
• It turns out to all trace back to some trauma suffered by someone now dead (perhaps this is the main ghost). The movie's drama culminates with the trauma being fully revealed in flashback.
• Uncovering the trauma in and of itself is basically what kills the ghosts and makes everything ok.
• The movie ends with the opposite-sex couple paired off and implicitly together (it's understood they'll now be regularly having sex, etc.) indefinitely.

In other words, the modern ghost story is a thinly-veiled metaphor for a psychotherapy hero-fantasy, from the point of view of an immature, lonely, libidinous psychotherapist.

I noticed this pattern most obviously when watching The Eye (the original, not the Jessica Alba remake, which I haven't seen), since it is so utterly pedestrian and fulfills every standard cliche and pattern of this subgenre I'm describing in every way imaginable. Its plot is literally what is above. (Mini-review: it's not bad.)

I'm thinking maybe this is why I appreciated The Ring so much more, because although for most of the film it seemed to be playing out the standard 'psychotherapy fantasy' arc, it really did a 180 at the end. And the creepy-kid stuff was really, really creepy. Dark Water, meanwhile, obeyed every cliche & was totally predictable, yet it had no romantic arc and ended on a real down note, so it was like the worst of both worlds: cliche and unenjoyable.

As you know, I have been gone for two weeks, and even though I had to go without anime and stuff I still had a good time. You already know that I got my hands of lots more manga, so you know that I have had stuff to read and do while I were away, but most of the time I watched TV (a few more weeks and MTV will have succesfully brainwashed me) and spent time with my several new friends, especially with the 'Cutest Girl' I told you about in an earlier post.

On Monday nights we have movie night and we rent a movie and eat some snacks and so, and since I moved in we have rented a new movie almost every night ...
We've seen movies like Superhero Movie , Forgetting Sarah Marshall , Knocked Up , Meet the Spartans (I just LOVE this movie, no matter how ridiculous it is! XD), Ping-pongkingen (as I always say about Swedish movies, worst crap ever - I hate Swedish movies except maybe one or two) and probably a few more that I can't remember right now. We also tried, me and the Cutest Girl, to get The Eye with Jessica Alba, not that it matters, and some other horror flicks, but they won't rent that ... the bastards. ;_;

I have done a few more things but they aren't stuff I see fit or interesting to talk about, but maybe some other time. Until then, pick up an issue of the new YEN PLUS magazine if you haven't already and have a great time!

P.S. I still haven't cought up with the anime I've missed these two weeks (almost 40 eps) and I will have to save up as I'm going back for at least another week in probably less than an hour, but I did get to watch Code Geass R2 episodes 22 and 23 and also episodes 100 and 101 of D.Gray-man (is it true D.Gray-man is going to end with 103 or a 104 episodes? :O) and I feel a little more at ease after the two week anime hiatus. I wonder if this eight week period is going to end with me hanging myself ... なんちゃって

Hmm- nach dem ganzen RL muss ich mal wieder etwas Strom sparen und den Rechner aus lassen. War heute Abend mit ein paar Freunden unterwegs in Wien - Austria City. Da steht "The Eye" - eine der größten Classic-Bühnen in SL. Es gab ein Live-Konzert von Reis Alter. Spannendes Konzert, tolle Kulisse, gut besucht und eine Handvoll Freunde waren auch noch dabei. Was will man mehr. Wie ich von Esmayeeli Delphin erfahren habe, ist Reis Alter auch viel in RL unterwegs - und tritt da vor 5.000 (!) Avataren auf den unterschiedlichsten SIMs auf. Wahnsinn!

CARACTERISTICAS

- Tipo: Mecanico (Atracador Vil)
- Salud aprox.: 4.700.000
- Duración de la batalla: 10 minutos o menos, boss contrarreloj, a los 10 minutos whipe inminente.
- Requisito minimo: Tener 8.000 de vida como minimo. Resistencia Arcana ayudaria un poco, pero no es extrictamente necesario.
- Es un jefe relativamente facil que requiere mucho DPS y no es muy necesario ser una lumbrera para hacer bien la tactica.

HABILIDADES

- Melee Basico: 3.000 ~ 4.000 en tankes

- Pounding: El pounding es un ataque ?Posed Based AoE? canalizado (PBAoEC) que revienta 1.350 ~ 2.250 a todos los personajes en un rango de 18 yardas (15 metros) cada segundo del channeling de daño arcano. Resistible. De 4050 a 6.750 de daño total cada vez que lo lanza. 12s Cooldown.

- Arcane Orb: Ataque de area limitada que lanza a la posicion donde un jugador se encuentra. Causa de 4.000 a 6.000 puntos de daño Arcano (Resistible) en un radio de 20 yardas. También silencia la zona por 6s. No ataca a melee. 3s de Cooldown. No ataca a jugadores si no a la zona donde se encuentran, asi que si los jugadores esa zona son el objetivo, deben moverse.

- Knock Away: Lanza al personaje al que se lo lanza, lo tumba y le reduce el agro en 25%, dejandolo al 75% del total. 30s de Cooldown. Solo golpea al primero en la tabla de agro (al tanke??).

- Enrage Countdown 10 minutes: A los 10 minutos explota y nos parte a todos en dos.

Puleando a Void Reaver

Void reaver se encuentra en la zona oeste del circulo central de la sala en la que se libra el encuentro, justo en frente de la entrada que se encuentra al este de la sala. Hay que mantenerlo todo el combate en el riguroso centro de la sala, lo pulea un hunter hasta el tanke principal y mientras que Void Reaver camina hacia el, toda la raid se coloca en un circulo perfecto marcado en el suelo con un dibujo, la melee, se coloca en un circulo a melee alrededor del jefe y cerca de su healer pq toda la melee recibirá el 60% de daño del encuentro y necesitará healing constante.

Desde el parche 2.1.2 NO es posible atacar a Void Reaver sin limpiar toda la sala en la que se encuentra y el pasillo que accede a el porque supondria un pull para el combate.

Posiciones de Batalla y Estrategia

El posicionamiento para Void Reaver es bastante Básico, los tankes mantendrán a Void Reaver siempre en el centro exacto de la sala (no admite errores de calculo) mientras que, como he explicado antes, los otros 5 grupos se colocan alrededor del circulo marcado en el suelo de la sala en las direcciones Norte, Sur, Este y Oeste, dejando a los melees y tankes en el grupo del centro. Todo el mundo debe estar al rango máximo de sus habilidades para poder maximizar el espacio disponible para esquivar la Orbe Arcana.

El encuentro no contiene diferentes fases por lo que es bastante lineal y es totalmente igual durante el flameo a Void Reaver, desde el 100% hasta el 0% de vida del jefe. Todos los personajes deben estar al 100% de vida o al menos muy cerca del 100% de vida para poder resistir una Orbe Arcana de 6.300 de daño maximo si eres ranged, o un Pounding acumulado de 6.300 de daño arcano maximo. El máximo objetivo de este encuentro es minimizar al máximo el daño recibido por estas dos habilidades que son las mas jodidas de Void Reaver.

Tanqueando a Void Reaver

Se necesitan 2-3 Tanques preferiblemente. Cada vez que Void Reaver hace un nockback lanza al tanque principal a tomar por tabacos la llanta y le quita el agro, por lo que pasaria a reventar al 2º de la tabla de agro. En ese momento, todo el healing cambia del MT al OT y el MT sigue cogiendo agro, repentinamente volverá a lanzar al tanque por los aires, por lo que el tercer tanque deberia entrar en juego y vuelta a cambiar el objetivo principal del focus-healing.Es aconsejable que los tanques secundarios estén dentro del pounding para sumar mucha mas ira y luego poder levantar el agro de Void Reaver rapidamente, mientras que la melee deberia alejarse cuando avise el BW o el Vendetta (Recomiendo usar los dos)Notas de Interés

- Void Reaver es un jefe Mecánico, por tanto no se le puede drenar vida con habilidades tales como Syphon Life, Drain Life o Death Coil. Que esperabais ? Besos Volaos ? /Call Pakito

- Los Melee (non-tanks) deberian usar una resistencia al Arcano, al menos de 110 puntos si piensan estar haciendo DPS durante el Pounding, lo cual seria demasiado sensato si falta DPS para completar el encuentro en menos de 10 minutos (Son 5.000.000 de vida). De todas maneras no es extrictamente necesario, ya que, pueden esquivar el pounding situandose a mas de 15 metros sin problema. A parte, la sanacion que requiere el pounding para 2-3 melees no es mucha.

- Como la batalla tiene un timer de 10 minutos, es preferible para las clases DPS: Warlocks, Shadow Priest, Rogues, Hunters, Mages acumular un agro en el KTM por un total del 85% del tercer tanke y luego hacer soulshatter, fade, vanish, feign death, invis? y despues volver a empezar a reventar a saco sin miedo.

- Todo el mundo piensa que Void Reaver es el boss mas facil de The Eye, y muchisima gente también piensa que Void Reaver es el jefe de raid mas facil de todo el wow en cuanto a tactica, por eso muchos le llaman ?The Loot Reaver? en modo de mofa. Todo el que va, lo revienta y le pilla el loot y le hace un /moon Razz

- Para los cazadores es considerable tener a la pet con buena resistencia arcana para poder tenerla en melee todo el tiempo, asi durante el combate tendrán facil curarla con el ?mend pet?

- hay un addon llamado voidalarm. Avisa si estás en rango para que te alcance o no la bola. Cuando lo acutivas la pantalla aparece en azul, si estas fuera de alcance de la bola la pantalla vuelve la normalidad.

Sydney Wells (Jessica Alba) ist schön, aber seit früher Kindheit an blind. Was sie nicht sieht, nimmt sie mit anderen Sinnen wahr. Eigentlich kommt sie mit ihrer Blindheit auch sehr gut zu recht, es ist mehr ihre Schwester, die um Vergangenes "gut" zu machen, auf eine Hornhaut-OP drängt. Irgendwann ist es dann auch so weit, die moderne Medizin verschafft ihr "neue" Augen. Um Wahrnehmung geht es in dem rund 100 Minuten dauernden Remake eines Hong Kong Klassikers dann auch. Im typischen Stil eines Horrorfilms geht es um diese magische Grenze zwischen Realität und Übersinnlichem, zwischen Genialität und Wahnsinn der Hauptdarstellerin. Natürlich glaubt ihr auch der attraktive Doktor (Alessandro Nivola) nicht, der sich doch so gut als männlicher Held eigenen würde.
The Eye ist zwar an sich gut gemeint, aber leider seicht geraten. Wer auf kreischende Frauen im Kino steht, der ist richtig. Wer einen Abend voller Popcorn und Zerstreuung sucht, der ist mit The Eye gut aufgehoben. Am Ende steckt ja dann doch ein bisschen durchdachte Geschichte hinter dem Plot, einzig der Weg zur Auflösung am Schluss setzt eben nur auf Schock und Thrill und ist somit kein Meisterwerk des Genres. Sondern ein Verhau.

This week I saw a great Japanese horror film: Bûsu or The Booth (2005)

At first I was a bit skeptical of a haunted radio booth.. but I put my trust in Tartan Asia Extreme because they have yet to dissapoint me and I am pleased to say that they delivered once again.  This film was great and extremely captivating.  The concept and plot is simple and extremely well done. I loved the use of flashbacks and Ryuta Sato's perforamce is brilliant. I don't want to give too much away so... check out this film!

Some other less great films I saw this week were the remakes of Prom Night (2008) and The Eye (2008)

Prom Night: I really wanted to like this movie because I'm such a huge sucker for slasher films, but I feel like what could've been a great film was sort of ruined by the heavy handed effort to keep it at a PG-13 rating. I wouldn't say this film is horrible because if I was a middle schooler I would probably love the fact there is a slasher movie for my age group. I have not seen the original film with Jamie Lee Curtis, but I have heard the remake is just loosely based on it. Another sad thing about this film is that I actually did prefer the alternate ending (although it's just one added line of dialogue) but adds much more complexity to this straightforward film. Overall I'm still looking for good PG-13 horror films, but this film and Shutter have left me disappointed.

The Eye: I loved the original Hong Kong movie so I was pretty sure that I would be disappointed by the American remake. Once again I hate how the American remake has to be so blunt and treats the audience like idiots while the original is really successful because of its mysteriousness.  Okay we get it, she sees ghosts, we don't need a whole drawn out/over dramatic silent scene of Jessica Alba walking through a girl and then seeing that the girl was in an accident and now she's dead. Although I did appreciate its accuracy to the original, I just wasn't diggin it. The original scared the pants off of me while this film was just sort of boring and too long. Overall review.. meh.

Nicolas Cage's last film, “National Treasure 2” grossed more than every single film that David Spade has ever taken a lead role in – combined. Think about that. Spade, who has almost a dozen pictures to his name, could tally up the grosses of his leading-role films (not including cartoons, of course) for his past decade in movies and they don't scratch one of Cage's lesser films.

I do not bring this up to pick on that sawed-off star of such fims as “Joe Dirt” and “The Benchwarmers.” There is a specific reason I am using the diminutive daddy-to-be as a measuring stick for Cage. It is because it's been five years since a film has had such low opening-weekend numbers and still retained the number-one spot at the box office. Cage's latest “Bangkok Dangerous” took in a total of $7 million.

The last time a film posted such a weak debut and still landed atop the cinematic heap? That crown goes to Spade, whose “Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star,” grossed a paltry $6.7 million in 2003 while still being able to brag “We're Number One!” Adjust that tally for ticket price inflation (about one dollar and change per ticket) and little “Dickie” would have been more dangerous than “Bangkok” at the box office.

It's not that “Bangkok” is a bad film, either. Rather, it's a terrible film. There are only faint glimmers of promise that directors The Pang Brothers demonstrated in their earlier work from their native Hong Kong home, and Cage has never looked more bored with being an action star.

Remember when there was a reason to hire Cage for a film beyond bankability? It was the promise that no matter how bland the character or the film, Cage could be counted on to inject an off-kilter credibility that would at least elevate the product ever-so-slightly.

Otherwise-generic offerings like “Con Air,” “Guarding Tess” and “National Treasure” were deemed watchable if only for the tangential takes Cage would inject in his role.

But from the first line of voiceover dialogue (“My name is Joe...This is what I do.”) to the final frame, “Dangerous” does not contain a single scene of originality. In fact, Cage is perhaps the only reason this entire film did not wind up making its debut at a local Blockbuster (Steven Seagal is somewhere shedding a silent ninja tear he did not get this).

Joe is an assassin. In Bangkok. And he's dangerous. There's a deaf girl love interest (Why is she deaf? Perhaps to save money by giving the actress a non-speaking role. Other than that, I've got no idea.) and a peppy sidekick. Everything (and everyone) else in the film is basically as irrelevant as the title. (Honestly, this film could be called “Vietnam Perilous,” or “Cambodia Mildly Inconvenient” with little difference.)

Cage shuffles through the cliches as though he's embarrassed by the hideous hair extensions he must wear for the role (apparently on loan from Tom Hanks in “The DaVinci Code”). Scene after scene cribs from better films as Cage provides invaluable assassin training tips: (“Time is very important”... and “Don't pull the trigger, squeeze it.” are just two of the pearls of wisdom he shares with his young protegee).

The directors, Danny and Oxide Pang, are mildly celebrated in Hong Kong. Arguably their best work was “The Eye,” which managed to out-creep “The Ring” and all other long-haired-ghost-girl horror films that were cranked out of J-horror genre. Then, they were handed a satchel of cash to remake (read: dumb down and homogenize) it for American audiences last year with Jessica Alba. Their original “Bangkok Dangerous” was released in 1999 and earned points for style, but was a rather empty-calorie crime drama at best. But even their visual flair is muted and neutered to the genre's most generic trappings here.

Perhaps Cage used this film as an excuse to take a vacation in Thailand (maybe why he looks to tired and ticked off is that filming disrupted his leisure time), as I can think of no other discernible reason he saw appeal in this film.

Audiences certainly did not, as witnessed by the anemic opening weekend numbers.

Maybe he should consider teaming up with that cinematic powerhouse known as David Spade in a buddy action comedy. I hear his schedule is fairly open.

She gets eye transplants and sees what the previous owner did prior to committing suicide: death and dead people. Just hard to believe that a chic like Alba is blind, what with all the hot clothes and perfect hair. My own mother can't comb her hair properly and she can see.

1 poop stick. I wasn't scared in the least bit. This warrants no further discussion. That's it. And why is it called "The Eye" when clearly she has two? Argh. Okay that's it.

In case you didn't know, several projects are currently being developed to capitalize on commemorate the Chanel brand's 100 years of existence. The most legitimate one would be Coco Before Chanel, which will start shooting in France on September 15th. Why the most legitimate? Well, it's a French movie (original title Coco Avant Chanel) and Coco Chanel was French. The 22 million dollar movie, which Warner Bros will distribute in the States, will be directed by Anne Fontaine (Nathalie...) and star the cute but ever-so-annoying Audrey Tautou (The Da Vinci Code) as the legendary fashion designer and Alessandro Nivola (The Eye) as her lover Boy Capel. Of course, everyone is unnecessarily wondering how the film will compare to last year's big French biopic La Vie En Rose (original title La Môme) which chronicled the life of singer Edith Piaf.

Los directores franceses David Moreau y Xavier Palud son los autores de esta película, la cual abrió el Festival de Cine Fantástico de Sitges del 2006, en la cual se intenta dar un nuevo enfoque a las historias de terror “de casas encantadas” en el que la pareja de protagonistas formada por la profesora Clementine (la sexy Olivia Bonamy) y el escritor Lucas (Michael Cohen) se ven acosados en su hogar (el cual, como es sabido en este tipo de producciones, está muy lejos de todo núcleo civilizado, en este caso, las afueras de Bucarest) por una “presencia” inidentificable (aunque muy real) que habita en la misma, y que… bueno, no les hará la vida fácil… y hasta ahí puedo leer.

Los directores franceses, antaño procedentes del mundo de la publicidad y que debutaron en el cine con “Ellos”, pretenden durante el metraje hacer hincapié en la “sugestión” e imaginación del espectador, para que todo aquello que no se vea pase a ser pasto de la elucubración. Formalmente, el film es notable. La fotografía, aunque oscura (muy oscura), muestra unos escenarios sórdidos, el ritmo es frenético y cabe destacar en su metraje elaborados planos de cámara muy originales.

Como curiosidad, David Moreau aseguró que la idea de la película se la proporcionó un taxista mientras estaban rodando un anuncio publicitario aludiendo a un caso real que le sucedió a una pareja austriaca. Los directores decidieron adaptarlo a una pareja francesa y mostrar una historia "alejada del terror de monstruos o violento" más tópica.

Fruto del éxito de “Ellos”, los directores dirigieron en el 2008 el remake americano de la película “The Eye”, protagonizada por Jessica Alba y que, desgraciadamente, defenestró vilmente el film original de los tailandeses Pang Brothers.

Ésta es mi escena favorita de Der himmel über Berlin, o Las alas del deseo, de Win Wenders: cuando Damiel, el ángel caído (caído a consciencia y no por designio divino, en pleno uso de su voluntad) se encuentra frente a frente con la mujer que ama, Marion, aquella que lo hizo desear caer. En este caso la caída no contiene un valor negativo, no se trata de perdición sino de encuentro. Lo dice Marion en su monólogo: Esta vez tiene que ser en serio, esta vez tiene que ser real. Al encontrarse con Damiel, Marion se encuentra como nunca ha podido encontrarse en ningún momento, en ningún espacio, con ninguna persona. Con Damiel obtiene precisamente soledad. Esa soledad tal como la define Pedro Garfias y como aparece inscrito en su tumba: "La soledad que uno busca no se llama soledad". No se llama así pero no hay otro modo de nombrarla. Lo único posible es detectar el instante en que no es espejismo ni engaño.
