With his aptly titled album 'The Recession' - reflective of recent times in the United States - dropping in the coming months, Young Jeezy sat down with The Fader and was "...as candid as we've ever seen, explaining what his album means to the state of the union, how he used to hate rappers, and even how Sade made him want to be a 'Smooth Operator'". I was just watching him and Kanye (you know the video) so it made sense to check this out after.

The world has become increasingly more cold without the presence of a strange new Irina Lazareanu and Pete Doherty Youtube video circulating on the web. The Fader must be feeling my sentiments exactly because they recently caught up with one-half of the traveling sideshow, Irina, to restore peace and justice back into my world.

She discusses festivals, her upcoming album that's been in production for what seems like years, and Agyness Deyn's budding music career. If anybody has watched Being Bobby Brown, you may since a bit of Whitney in the model. And I'm not talking about the "hell to the nawl" kind either. This attribute is much more peculiar.

One of my favorite magazines, The Fader is doing a special tribute to singer Aaliyah who unfortunately passed away in 2001. The issue features interview with Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Mark Ronson, DJ Blaqstarr, Damon Dash, Andrew WK, Beth Ditto of the Gossip, Method Man, Kid Sister, and more. She left the world before her prime and who knows what she could of have accomplish. You can grab The Fader at your favorite local bookstore or you can download it now. The Fader even put out a special mix compiled by DJ the Honorable Caps. You can grab the mixes here.

Trivia: Trent Reznor of NIN was supposed to work with Aaliyah, but had a schedule conflict. Aaliyah was a big fan of Trent.

Four Tet just released his new Ringer EP today and last week he gave the Fader this exclusive 30 minute mix, which features his latest single "Ringer" along with 11 other tracks from artists like The Field and Autechre. This is definitely recommended listening if you're in to spaced out techno and dubstep and the new Four Tet EP is pretty awesome too, so go pick that up while you're at it. What's with all these great EPs coming out this spring? Spoon, Animal Collective, Surkin, Four Tet...I don't know if this constitutes a trend, but I'll take great music in whatever form it comes in.

The FADER recently dropped it's new issue focused around contemporary African music and its surrounding culture. The issue, and its treatment of the subject, is pretty amazing because it continues to help shatter the idea that "blackness" is a singular concept.

This read about contemporary African music movements got me excited in a way I haven't been in awhile (read: not since stumbling upon the diverse Chicago music scene last year). I was already familiar with South African genres like Kwaito to an extent. But African music is still very unknown and foreign sounding within the context of international mainstream music. And the intricacies of African music culture are largely unfamiliar to me. Reading these stories gave a feel for specific artists doing their own thing in and outside of said music culture. Groups like BLK JKS and Sweat.X are undeniably South African, but don't allow themselves to be limited by the distinction.

BLK JKS sit somewhere between rock, dub, and ska; unfazed by the previous stigmas attached to any of the genres, they have a sound and attitude belonging only to them.

Sweat.X is a black/white (gasp) duo that puts hip hop rhymes over techno/house/IDM/B-more gutter/electro beats. They're reminiscent of Spank Rock, but in my opinion, they push the envelope a little further. Also, the fact that South Africa has a history of explicit racial tension makes this pairing all the more interesting to me (for reasons that aren't entirely clear yet).

What's coming out of Africa musically right now is fresh and authentic, without being too isolated or alienating. If the music progresses, and the attention continues, I really think it will help push Africa (and by default, the idea of blackness), into a new stage of cultural relevance and discussion. Because God forbid we talk about Africa in a context other than terrorists, Akon, Joseph Conrad, starving people, AIDS, Starbucks, and/or child soldiers.

Mount Vernon stand the fuck up...

Pete Rock - ‘Till I Retire (first cut off of his new solo joint NY’s Finest)

Jim Jones feat. Max B & Pete Rock - We Roll [DJ] (Produced by Pete Rock)

I was looking for that second joint last night. Thanks to eskay. Real talk, I was so mad when I heard Jimmy got laced with a PR beat, and that Max B was on it... but i'll be damned. This shit is fucking hot. I was confused the first time I heard it on Real Late with Peter Rosenberg, but when I heard it for the second time on Sunday night's show.. I wasn't mad anymore. The beat is too ill for bad vibes, and not for nothing, Jimmy did his thing on the song, and didn't compromise his song just because he was in the studio with a legend. What I will say is that Jimmy needs to lose the adlibs, shit's disgusting b.

Is it just me or does he sound a bit like Cam on the Jimmy song. Speaking of Cam...

The Fader magazine threw a party to celebrate their 45th issue last night at the National Arts Club, a pretty snazzy beaux-arts building on Gramercy Park South. Since I didn't get a chance to see Lavender Diamond there earlier this month (too jet-lagged from vacation), I thought I'd check this out.

I haven't seen Bill play in almost four years (since I worked with him), and it was refreshing to see him doing his thing, which he does oh-so-well. The trio of Bill, Joanna Newsom on piano and Jim White on drums was very subtle, but very beautiful, providing a new treatment/interpretation of Bill's older songs (favorites included "Bathysphere," "Cold Discovery," "Leave the Country" and "Rock Bottom Riser," among others). I was seated up in front, between Jim and Bill, and I gotta say just getting to watch Jim up-close was pretty amazing. Obviously I've known of his awesome drumming for years and years, but when you actually get to see him up-close and pay attention to all the thing's he's doing, it's pretty mindblowing.

Other highlights of the evening included free beer, the djing antics of Mr. Joshua Wildman, watching a bartender duct-tape a piece of paper to a Tiffany lamp in the bar, and seeing Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson look sleepy.
