Ron Perlman returns to the title role as Hellboy, a humanoid creature born in the flames of Hell and brought to Earth as an infant. Raised in secret, the adolescent "HB" becomes an agent for the secret Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development (BPRD), a covert government agency which serves as the planet's line of defense against otherworldly evil. Selma Blair will also reprise the role of Liz Sherman, a pyrokinetic human who is HB's colleague and love interest. "Hellboy 2" will expand the world of Hellboy and surround him with characters both new and familiar as he confronts a deadly threat to mankind.

Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight" conquered the North American box office for a third straight weekend and was close to smashing the record for the fastest film to gross 400 million dollars, estimates showed Sunday.

Director Christopher Nolan's follow-up to 2005's "Batman Begins" grabbed another 43.8 million dollars over the weekend, pushing its three-week take to 394.9 million dollars, according to box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

The Warner Bros. film already seized the record for best opening and second weekends -- 158.4 million dollars and 75.2 million dollars -- and became the fastest film to reach the 200 million and 300 million dollar marks.

DreamWorks' animated film "Shrek 2" holds the record for quickest to 400 million dollars, reaching the figure in 43 days.

"The Dark Knight," which stars Christian Bale as Batman and the late Heath Ledger in a widely acclaimed turn as the villainous Joker, has been in US theaters for just 16 days.

The Caped Crusader fell short of the record for a third weekend, however, with "Spider-Man" hanging on to the 45 million dollar mark.

Batman's continuing dominance left another potential summer blockbuster, "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," with just a modest 42.5 million dollars take in its opening weekend.

The third installment of the adventure series stars Brendan Fraser as an explorer fighting in China to save the world from a resurrected emperor, played by Jet Li.

"Step Brothers," starring Will Farrel and John C. Reilly as two middle-aged men still living at home when their respective widowed parents meet and get married, was in third place with 16.3 million dollars in its second weekend.

The ABBA musical "Mamma Mia!" took the fourth spot with 13.1 million dollars, followed by another Fraser-starring adventure, "Journey to the Center of the Earth," which raked in 6.9 million dollars.

The political comedy "Swing Vote," starring Kevin Costner an apathetic American who somehow ends up having to cast the deciding vote in the US presidential election, opened in sixth place with 6.3 million dollars.

The Will Smith superhero flick "Hancock" dropped one spot to seventh place with 5.2 million dollars, while the animated hit "Wall-E" took 4.7 million dollars and the eighth spot.

"The X-Files: I Want to Believe" was in ninth place with 3.4 million dollars, ahead of the animated comedy "Space Chimps" with 2.8 million dollars.

"Hellboy II: The Golden Army" and "Wanted" rounded up the top 12 with 2.5 million and 1.3 million dollars, respectively.

Once upon a time, there was a war between humans and some sort of mythical creatures. An unstoppable

Once upon a time, there was a war between humans and some sort of mythical creatures. An unstoppable Golden Army of mechanical soldiers was created to destroy the humans. However, before this decimation occurs, a truce is formed and the army is sent to cold storage. Humans live in the cities and the creatures roam the forests. But the humans forget their duties and piss off Prince Nuada. He comes out of exile to destroy mankind by invoking the Golden Army. His twin sister disagrees and runs away with a part of the crown needed to take control of the army. Since Nuada surfaces somewhere around present day New York, Hellboy and his friends are laced with the task of stopping him and his Golden Army.

The premise isn't particularly interesting (not to mentioned the flawed culmination) and the script isn't a gem either but what pulls this film through is the vision of writer-director Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth). He picks out a story that allows him to stay true to the Hellboy mythology but also provides him with the scope to fill the film with wondrous visuals.

The strongpoint of both Hellboy movies is the exploration of the characters and their conflicts with an undercurrent of humor. The scenes depicting the humanlike aspects of these paranormal crime fighting creatures works really well in both films. Hellboy, Liz, Abe and even the newly introduced Klaus kept me happy. The conflict for these supercreatures is still the same. They are trying to fit into the world they inhabit and help but despite their efforts humans continue to reject them.

If you are put off by weird creatures, crazy insects and a lot of gunk, you might not like the Hellboy universe. Otherwise, I believe this is a worthy successor (in fact, it is a bit better) to Hellboy and will be liked by most of those who enjoyed the original.

P.S. Some critics have pointed out that the plot of this film is quite similar to that of the third film in the Mummy series that released this weekend. Judging by the savage reviews of that film, this would be a much better watch.

You give this a bad review...and I'll break out mah BIG GUN...

Usually if I don't see a movie a week or two after it's release, I don't make a point to see it...especially in the summertime, when the glut of movies can be overwhelming. But for Guillermo Del Toro, who directed and produced one of my favorite movies ever, "Pan's Labyrinth", I figured I would make an exception. So I drove all the way to Zanesville, OH to see it with my brother, the OTHER half of "Popcorn and a Soda" and once again, we were witness to another average film.

For whatever reason, a majority of the films we see together usually are disappointments. I don't know if I would call this movie a disappointment per se, but it definately didn't live up to the expectations that I had for it. Although I enjoyed the first "Hellboy", I wouldn't call it a classic. So this one kinda falls right in line with the original...but I thought the original was better.

Here's MY take on "Hellboy II: The Golden Army". Guillermo has a vision. And usually it has a lot of creatures in it. And unfortunately he spends maybe a little too much time working on the monsters and not enough time developing the script. Although no "X-Files", I have a hard time with the overall theme of this movie and that is "love". Yes..."love". A love between Hellboy and Liz. A love between Abe (the fish guy) and a princess. The love of mankind. The love of the fable world of fairies and trolls and mythical creatures. Lots of love everywhere. And it gets a little old after awhile. Plus...when the highlight of a comic book action hero movie is a fight between the main character and a giant plant, you know ya got some issues. And that is what happens here.

And once again, I'm all for special effects, but they can't carry a movie (the first couple of "Harry Potter" films proved that theory. They got MUCH better once the effects became more in the background) and the creatures of this film almost overwhelm every scene that they are in. Character development of this film is somewhat stagnant, even with a surprise in the storyline about Hellboy's future and an addition character that I found to be interesting (he's made of a "mist" that can leave his suit at anytime). And an additional disappointment was "The Golden Army" of the title. Basically a bunch of giant robots that get very little screentime and didn't justify their name in the title. Also the main villain, who looks like he could have come from any of the "Blade" films, was very weak.

Overall I think this movie will do just as well on DVD. Nothing to rush out and plunk down $10 for...

Overall Raiting: C

It was a terrible movie, in my opinion. It was just too weird for my taste. I'm sure some people like it though. The only reason I saw it was because my friend wanted to see it and I just said "what the hell". The characters looked like they were created by someone on LSD and ironically they all looked similar to one another. The story line (or lack there-of) was pretty bad too. To describe the characters, it looked like a scary mix of Lord of the Rings, Sesame Street, and Harry Potter. I guess they were creative, but that's what people say about things made out of Popsicle sticks. I wasn't sure whether Hellboy was supposed to be the devil, or just some red guy with cut off horns who was ironically called Hellboy. I cannot tell everything about the movie because I zoned out many times. But I can tell you it was a total waste of $9.75. And what's the deal with the Golden Army? I won't go into detail, but when they were explaining it during the movie, my ears started bleeding. The best part of the whole movie was some upcoming movie preview about some movie where everyone goes blind. Dear God, please don't let them make a 3rd one.

The Mrs. and I had a much needed date night yesterday.

We grabbed some food at this fancy mexican restaurant called Chipotle. :)

Went to Half Price Books to find some baby books for fathers-to-be (me!). I bought Scott Mactavish's The New Dad's Survival Guide. To my surprise, HPB had three brand new copies of The Prisoner: Volume 4, on DVD, of which I was missing (yay!), but decided not to buy (boo!). I also passed up the chance to buy a used copy of Norwegian black metal band, Dimmu Borgir's, World Misanthropy DVD for only $15 clams (double boo!). My frugality can be disgusting sometimes.

Finally, we cruised over to the multiplex and watched Hellboy II: The Golden Army. We both loved the first one and were excited to see the latest installment. There wasn't another single soul in the theater when we walked in and I was able to sit exactly were I wanted to; bit of an A/V snob. It appears that everyone else on the planet was too busy watching that other movie, The Dark Knight.

In a nutshell, I thought Hellboy II was visually stunning (in the vein of Pan's Labyrinth), had some great dialogue, but the seemingly never ending action sequences began to grate on my eyes and ears. The fantastic musical composer, Danny Elfman, provides an amazing sounding score. Go check it out!

I'm completely enthralled by the visionary genius of Guillermo del Toro, and to say that I was looking forward to "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" as much as most people were looking forward to "The Dark Knight" would not be an exaggeration. When I finally got to see the movie, the only disappointment I felt afterwards was that I couldn't stop the camera here and there and jut linger on some of the gorgeous imagery. Thanks to this lovely book, I can now experience the next best thing. I've already spent hours poring over every page.

It's just stuffed full of beautiful images: stills from the film, conceptual drawings for gadgets, monsters and characters, storyboards, early mock-ups for some of the character prostheses. There's also copious notes from the people involved in the production, an informative introduction from Guillermo del Toro himself and a complete copy of the final shooting script.

So, with that out of the way, let's take a look at some photos I took from the book. If they look funny, blurry or oddly lit, it's from me and not the book itself. It's really hard to get well-lit photos of glossy pages.

Oh, and if you haven't seen the movie yet, then I suggest you don't look at any of the photos after the jump because they could be considered major spoilers.

Release: 11th July, 2008 (US) / 22 August, 2008 (UK)
Dir: Guillermo del Toro
Starring: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, Seth MacFarlane, Luke Goss, Anna Walton, Jeffrey Tambor,	John Hurt

Improving on the original Hellboy was never going to be difficult (and I was a fan of the original), but The Golden Army has done well.

I found it to be just as endearing, brutish and crude as the lead character and it definately had a certain charm to it. Not for the most serious of people, I can understand it's short comings in both plot and dialogue but as long as it's viewed with an open mind and a good sense of humour, this film will not disappoint.

del Toro has brought in some fantastic visualisation and character design, similar to those of his celebrated Pan's Labyrinth as well as the inspired choice to cast Family Guy and American Dad creator Seth McFarlane as the voice of Hellboy's new boss Johann Kraus - "a disembodied ectoplasmic spirit with psychic abilities who maintains a tangible form via a containment suit".

In a sense, it's a shame that the character and comics aren't as established as the likes of Superman/Batman/Spiderman et al, and that people are going to expect the same kind of epic special effects and budget as that is what's expected now with the comic > film genre.

It was great to see more involvement from the character Abe and also a higher standard of acting from Selma Blair whom I'm non-too impressed with for the most part of her acting career.

It's set up for a trilogy, and I can only hope that for the comic's sake that it fulfills where both this and the original fall short and finally does the franchise justice.

No spoils, not my style, but worth a read none the less.

I went to go see Hancock while in Tennessee on July 5th. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting and while it wasn't a super awesome blockbuster it was enjoyable. With that being said if I knew then what I know now I'm petty sure I would have waited for it to come out on video. Another great idea for a movie where they rely more on the special effects than the story itself. BUT, still good, just not as good as I was hoping for. Not disappointed, just not thoroughly pleased. They left it wide open for a sequel, but I'm not sure if they will. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If they do decide to make a Hancock 2 I'll be waiting for it to come out on DVD. ;)

I got to see Hellboy II: The Golden Army while at home in Arizona on opening day, July 11th. I wasn't the biggest fan of the first Hellboy movie, but I liked it. I found it to be theater worthy, but just barely. Well guess what folks... it turns out that Hellboy II is even better than the first. This is such an amazing trend as of late (sequels being better than the originals). Hellboy still hasn't attained the comic book movie quality of a Marvel (Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men...) movie, but it seems to be gaining momentum. Hellboy II was also left wide open for another installment, and I see no reason for them not to do this one. I'll be standing in line of opening day for Hellboy III when the time comes.

Sorry guys, no rage reviews this time around. Two good movies, but only one good enough for the price of admission, and that's only if such movies are your cup of tea. If you're thinking of going to see one of them, I suggest Hellboy II be the one. ;)

Directed by Guillermo del Toro, I was expecting greatness, especially because I was a marginal fan of the first film. Hellboy 2 wasn't bad and it wasn't great. I'd say it had more potential to be great than it did to be bad, but fell short.

There is a strange level of attempted comedy, most of it actually succeeded. The attempts at dramatic romance were painful. An example of this would be a horrible fight/lovers' tiff, which left me thinking "why the hell am I watching this?" Then, shortly after, Hellboy and Abraham are drunk and singing their woes - that was funny.

I think the previous juxtaposition of scenes serves as a pretty accurate metaphor for the film: the good was always followed by the bad and then followed by the good.

At moments I would be thinking film was awful and then I would think it was great - it's a roller coaster of despair and enjoyment.

The one thing this film really has going for it was that it set-up, very well, sequels and I mean that in the best way possible.

B-

NOTE: I am not a Hellboy graphic novel reader, so I was looking at this film solely as a film.

and then... I saw The Dark Knight and I felt like I had been baptized anew in a fire fueled by angel hair. It is honestly one of the best films I have EVER seen. Only twice in my life have I left an entertainment event with the feeling I left Batman with last night.

User Rating: 8.2/10 (5,585 votes)

The Golden Army begins when an ancient truce existing between humankind and the invisible realm of the fantastic is broken; Hell on earth is ready to erupt. Hellboy 2 tells the tale of a ruthless leader who treads the world above and the one below, defies his bloodline and awakens an unstoppable army of creatures. Its up to the planets toughest, roughest superhero to battle the merciless dictator and his marauders. He may be red, he may be horned, he may be misunderstood, but when you need the job done right, its time to call in Hellboy (Ron Perlman), and the B.P.R.D.

The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) will travel between the surface world and the unseen magical one, where creatures of fantasy become corporeal, along with his expanding team pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), aquatic empath Abe (Doug Jones), and protoplasmic mystic Johann Krauss (James Dodd), the newest member of the BPRD. Hellboy, a creature of two worlds who is accepted by neither, must choose between the life he knows and an unknown destiny that beckons him.

A slip-up results in the F.B.I. being forced to reveal the existence of BPRD to the general public. Brash old Hellboy doesn't play well with the public, which only increases the instability of his already-turning-rough relationship with Liz. However, fellow paranormal Johann (who is a sort of ectoplasmic spirit held within a very special containment suit) is far better with the public -- and with Liz, apparently. But in the end they've all got to come together to fight Prince Luke Goss (son of the Woodland King), who, with his army of ghouls, faerie, and the like, is attempting to resurrect a golden army once controlled by his father. .

Thanks to Hellboy II (or so I would imagine), I’ve been getting lots of hits in spite of a lac

Thanks to Hellboy II (or so I would imagine), I've been getting lots of hits in spite of a lack of regular updates. Messrs Mignola, Del Toro and Perlman, thank you very much! The film does look quite gorgeous, as do most of Del Toro's films - obviously they give the Latin American version of Peter Jackson full reign, and his wild imagination thanked them accordingly.

But that's not what I wanted to blog about. Instead, I've come to praise Yorick Brown, not to bury him.

Remember what I wrote a couple of days ago about Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men? Well, Joss is not the only sadistic bastard out there writing comics. Enter Mr Brian K Vaughan, who recently finished his long tale of a man, his helper monkey and a world full of women.

While I enjoyed all ten volumes of Y: The Last Man (the final volume just came out), the series isn't perfect. There are moments when Vaughan missteps. The plot could do with some tightening. And the hook and setup are so breathtakingly big that it's almost impossible for the ending to satisfy fully.

Warning: Here be spoilers!

The story strand that perhaps worked least for me was Alter's trajectory. She's intriguing to begin with, but Vaughan didn't seem to know where to take her. She ends up as someone who cannot cope and, as an alternative to suicide, tries to get someone else to pull the trigger by being an all-round homicidal bitch. We've had similar motifs with Hero, with 355 (although more subtly, perhaps) and even with Yorick. It doesn't help that there are entire issues that seem to forget completely about her.

Regardless of that, though, issues 58-60 are heartbreaking. 355's death (apart from a flashback to Yorick's intervention in an earlier volume (Safeword) that didn't work as well as it should have) is done beautifully and practically wordlessly, to devastating effect. Pia Guerra's simple yet effective art is at its best in the facial expressions: 355's final look at Yorick, his silent exchange with Alter, and his face as he looks up at Hero, unable even to begin to express what has happened.

Issue 60 is a tricky one: with its "60 years later" conceit, it could easily have fallen flat. And there is something alienating about seeing a world where most of the familiar characters are absent and Yorick appears to be an old, white-haired loon in a straightjacket. My first reaction to the final issue was one of feeling at a distance from the guy we'd just accompanied for several years through a post-gendercidal world, where before he'd always been the ideal screen for all us white, somewhat nerdy male Lit majors to project ourselves onto. But with every flashback filling in glimpses of what happens during the 60 years in between the last two issues, Vaughan hooked me more and more.

At first I would have said that the best, worst moment of the issue is Ampersand's death, euthanised by an old Yorick wanting to spare his friend the pain. It's a simple, touching farewell to a character who, with his Eeps and Cheeps has become as much of a person as any of the human characters. This was topped, though, by the silent, moving last three pages, as our escape artist Yorick gets out of his last fix. Vaughan and Guerra handle it perfectly, giving us and the characters just the right note to end on.

So, on that note: Thank you, Brian K Vaughan. Thank you, Pia Guerra. Thank you, Yorick, 355, Dr Mann, Beth, other Beth, Natalya and, of course, Ampersand. It's been a terrific journey.

And if you break my heart again, Mr Vaughan, I will do real damage to you with the Absolute Sandman vol. 3.

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411477/

This review contains minor spoilers

I wouldn't call the first Hellboy a great film, but I thought it was decent and I enjoyed watching it. I also love Guillermo Del Toros visual style so I thought that this sequel would be at least good for an above average time. Unfortunately I was mistaken and ended up with a film that was pretty dissapointing and not really worth seeing in theaters. It had the occasional redeeming moment but all in all it was not the most enjoyable film. It's so hard to understand though, Del Toro is a phenomenal director and the actors are talented as well. I think where the film failed was the writing, it had an amazing premise and some cool ideas but it was bogged down by needless and annoying attempts at drama and awkward character development.

I'm going to talk about the good parts, since only pointing out flaws is never as much fun and the few things I liked may be enough for some people to warrant spending the ticket price. The best part of the entire film was the character of Prince Nuada, played by Luke Gross. He looked cool, Gross' acting was perfect for the role, and his fight scenes were some of the best I've seen this year. I enjoyed almost every single scene with him in it, and they actually held my attention extremely well - especially the fights which as I sort of said already, were amazing.

I also enjoyed Selma Blair, both her acting and the character itself - except perhaps when she was chanting to herself about fire. I'm going to take a short break from the good bits just to say that the rest of the cast was not very enjoyable, but it may just be my opinion - but then again this entire blog is mostly my opinion.

The art direction and cinematography were all amazing - but that's to be expected from Del Toro. There were some very interesting shots and angles in this film, which provided somewhat of a relief from the story itself. The film just looked really cool; Del Toro has a knack for creating amazing worlds and awesome looking creatures so this film was great to look at - even if it lacked somewhat in substance.

So the film had its moments, it wasn't all bad and I did enjoy parts of it, but overall it was dissapointing and I wouldn't recommend seeing it in theaters. I think if you really liked the first film, or just want to see more of Del Toros visual style than it may be worth renting, but otherwise it's probably better just to avoid it.

Ron Perlman returns in the title role in "Hellboy II: The Golden Army."

(CNN) -- Will Smith's Hancock wasn't the first superhero with bad habits and a bad attitude. Hellboy, the protagonist of "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," has a bit of the devil in him: His skin is red; he has two shorn-off horns on his head, a gargantuan club fist and a long, slippery tail.

He also has a down-to-earth side: a fondness for Cuban cigars, Mexican beer, TV and candy. He has a short fuse and he'd like a little appreciation for his efforts, please.

He deserves it, too.

This rank outsider isn't a billionaire like Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark. He's not even a scientist like Bruce Banner. He's more of a working stiff, a slugger with a gruff manner and a stogie in the side of his mouth -- but he wants to bat for the right team. (According to writer-artist Mike Mignola, the character was inspired by his father, a cabinetmaker.)

Hellboy -- or "Red" to his friends -- has switched studios since his 2004 big-screen debut, from Columbia to Universal. Not that it shows. Writer-director Guillermo del Toro is still pulling the strings, and the key creative personnel are all back, including Ron Perlman in the title role, Selma Blair as the pyrokinetic Liz (now Mrs. Hellboy), Doug Jones as the piscine Abe Sapien (the brains to Red's brawn), and -- behind the scenes -- cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, and art whizzes Stephen Scott and Peter Francis.

Between them, they conjure up one hell of a creature feature.

"Hellboy II" boasts a dazzling multitude of imaginary beings: the deceptively delicate tooth fairies (so called because they eat bone, with a fondness for teeth in particular); the elfin king whose antlers grow out of his head to form a crown; the plantlike forest god that collapses into a strangely beautiful floral mulch right under the Brooklyn Bridge; the magnificent Angel of Death, an old crone who unfurls her wings to reveal a sparkling set of eyes (an avian variation on the creepiest creation in the acclaimed "Pan's Labyrinth," del Toro's last movie).

Then there's the redoubtable Johann Kraus, an officious but in many ways admirable German who only exists as a vapor trail -- except when he's bottled up in an ingeniously modified, but still splendidly archaic, deep-sea diving suit.

When a filmmaker can invest even a puff of smoke with so much chutzpah you know he's on to something. It's wonderful to see del Toro let his imagination run rampant like this. iReport.com: Did you see "Hellboy II"? Share your review

The plot concerns an ancient race that's determined to wage war on humanity, but it's secondary to del Toro's amazing characters.

The Mexican director's first Hollywood movies ("Mimic" and "Blade II") were far less distinctive than his Spanish-language films: "Cronos," "The Devil's Backbone" and "Pan's Labyrinth." You couldn't really call "Hellboy II" an advance on the latter -- "Pan's" was nominated for six Oscars and won three -- but it's obvious he relishes this material. It's pulpy and hammy and unashamedly lowbrow, and del Toro has the confidence and power to make it his own. The film feels very free, loose and (unusually for a special-effects picture) improvisational.

An outsize personality such as Perlman is in his element here. Even when the wisecracks fall short -- there are an awful lot of "ass" gags -- they are closer to the grubby, subversive impulses of the comic books than the over-hyped, market-tested, industrial-strength blockbuster adaptations Hollywood churns out.

It's not for nothing that the central tension running through this movie is Red's anarchic streak, his sometimes irresponsible need to be his own man in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (the "X-Men"-like institution where he works) and in his marriage. Scratch the surface, and this is a film about love and loyalty, figuring out where your deepest bonds lie.

Highbrows may damn "Hellboy II" as a "comic book movie," though even they would have to grant that its wonderful idiosyncrasies indicate brilliance. But it's more than that. Hellboy does so much growing up over the course of these 110 minutes, we may have to call him "Hellman" from now on.

Let's hope Universal stays the course and gives us that opportunity. People as creative as del Toro and his gang need all the support we can give them.
