つい先日トロントのToskala が、なんと相手ゴールラインからのクリアシュートをトンネル（？）してしまう。NHL史上最長のゴール？

Toskala is a great goalie and will be always remembered as JFJ's best moves. He will also always be remembered for a short-handed goal from 174 feet out. Joe Bowen is right, he was on all sports shows and most channels all morning and this should continue all week.

Rangers left wing Ryan Hollweg had an assist yesterday. That puts him in the upper echelon of NHL players. As evidence, here is a comparison of his numbers (0 G, 1 A) and salary ($500,000) with some other well-known NHLers.

Luongo, VAN: 0 G, 2 A, $6.5 million

Turco, DAL: 0 G, 2 A, $5.7 million

Osgood, DET: 0 G, 2 A, $800,000

Vokoun, FLA: 0 G, 1 A, $5.3 million

Brodeur, NJ: 0 G, 1 A, $5.2 million

Nabokov, SJ: 0 G, 1 A, $5 million

DiPietro, NY: 0 G, 1 A, $4.5 million

Kiprusoff, CGY: 0 G, 1 A, $3.6 million

Hasek, DET, 0 G, 1 A, $2.05 million

Fleury, PIT: 0 G, 1 A, $1.6 million

Toskala, TOR: 0 G, 1 A, $1.375 million

You see clearly that Hollweg is providing equal, or almost equal, production to all these well-known players for only a fraction of the price.

It was two years before the Toronto Maple Leafs won their last Stanley cup when the Mamas and the Papas released their hit song California Dreamin' in 1965. Little did they know, that song would be about those Leafs for the next forty years.

The first lyric in the song relates to the fall in Toronto, metaphorically and literally. "All the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey."

Yes, those Leafs are experiencing some grey skys and are watching a middle-aged team grow old, just as leaves go brown in the fall.

Leafs fans were rejoicing in the summer. They finally had a starting goaltender in Vesa Toskala. Nothing could go wrong there. If Toskala were to fail, former Calder winner Andrew Raycroft was waiting on the bench to create a goaltending controversy.

The only problem is that goaltending controversy has arrived in the worst way possible.

Instead of Paul Maurice choosing the goalie that will give him the best chance to win, he has to put in the goalie that will give him the least chance to lose. It sounds the same, it probably is the same, but it's not the right mindset.

This controversy in goal is overshadowing the lone bright spot in the Leafs' organization this year, is that Mats Sundin is finally living up to and surpassing expectations with 19 points amounted already.

That's all fine and dandy, until Toskala starts a game and lets in four goals, gets pulled, and Raycroft lets in three leading to a 7-1 thrashing by the hands of the mediocre-at-best Washington Capitals.

The problems don't end on the ice, though. General Manager John Ferguson Jr. knows that Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment isn't going to offer him an extension. So what kind of a reason does that give to improve the team?

Although he was basically a lame duck GM in the off season anyways.

So this brings the question of whether the Leafs should keep trying to be mediocre and make the playoffs or rebuild?

They can make the playoffs, where they will have an early exit because it's obvious this isn't a championship calibre team, or they can miss the playoffs by a few points and try and get better in the summer.

But what the Pittsburgh Penguins proved to be the perfect plan on a few occasions, is that if you're going to miss the playoffs, miss them in last place. Unload at the deadline, pick up draft picks, keep your own high draft pick, and build your team through young players.

Either that or they keep California Dreamin' every April when the playoffs come around, and watch the real contenders from their hammocks.

Well it is autumn, so the following can only be expected at this time of year. The Toronto Maple Le

Well it is autumn, so the following can only be expected at this time of year. The Toronto Maple Leafs are falling off the tree, and when the winter and snow comes in a short time, they will be covered under eight feet of the white stuff without anyway of getting out until the spring, and by then it will be too late.

Canada's most beloved NHL team (okay, maybe not) is off to a rocky start this season and if something isn't done within the next week to 10 days, this team can kiss the playoffs goodbye for the third straight season.

The problem with the Leafs is, well, everything. Their offense is nothing compared to the powerhouses like their hated Ontario rivals from Ottawa and other teams like Carolina or even Philadelphia. Mats Sundin is producing, but that's the part where it ends.

Darcy Tucker, after getting a raise this summer - which he deserved after racking up 24 goals and 43 points in 56 games last year - has put up no points in four games so far this season. He also has a plus/minus of -5. Jason Blake, for the time being, gets spared a little scrutiny because he is battling something far more important than a scoring slump.

Defensively, this team needs to go right back to the drawing board. The best defenceman this year for the blue and white has been Ian White, and one defenceman isn't going to solve all your problems. Forget about Bryan McCabe, Tomas Kaberle and Hal Gill. One plays too soft, the other doesn't know how to play in his own end (he's a great offensive defenceman) and the other is slow and in the new NHL is a liability rather than an asset.

Last night the Leafs were dealt a 7-1 loss on home ice at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes, who have come out of the gate with a renewed enthusiasm. A lot of people looked at the score and automatically believed that goaltending was the big problem in last night's disaster. Vesa Toskala was, believe it or not, undeserving of the blame in this loss. If it wasn't for the Leafs new goalie making some huge saves on breakaways and odd-man rushes, then the Hurricanes may have racked up 10, 11 or 12 goals. Yes, the Leafs played that bad.

The Leafs general manager John Ferguson Jr. is on the hot seat and will be fired sooner than you can snap a finger if this team doesn't turn it around. Judging by the lack of dynamic players on this team, a firing of the general manager just might be the only way to turn this team around.
