Weaving through the packed Middle East upstairs Friday night was not quite like gallivanting, IRL, through the “Most Viewed” page on YouTube — neither the Evolution of Dance dude nor the laughing baby was in attendance — but it was a surreal gathering of Internet video celebrities nonetheless. It was “The Music Show of the Memes,” the concert to celebrate the opening of ROFLCon (a conference of experts on Internet stardom and I Can Has Cheezburger). The memes were indeed out in full force.

One moment, Denny Blaze, who achieved meme-dom with his goofy, grainy “Average Homeboy” video demos in 2006, is handing me his business card and explaining (in ironic sotto voce for a rapper) that he made most of the videos in the ’80s, “before YouTube and before CDs,” with a hint of awe that such a time ever existed. Next, I’m hovering near “Tron Guy,” a mustachio’d man bedecked in glowing blue lights that are affixed to knee pads, a helmet, and a Frisbee — providing excellent illumination for mid-show note taking, along with the camera flashes beaming from every corner of the room.

Indeed, it seems everyone has brought along a camera or an iPhone and is incessantly snapping photos, especially when Leslie Hall (the queen of parodic white-girl rap) strides on stage like Internet royalty, reigning over the fawning crowd in gold spandex and thick glasses, with her ladies-in-waiting the LY’s flanking her in bedazzled sweaters.

ROFLcon was a lot of fun. Learned a lot of cool stuff at the conference and saw some great stuff too. There was a lot of stuff about gender and the web, and why panels were mostly male-dominated and why there are "no women on the internet." I have my own theories about this, the most valid (in my opinion) being that women aren't as accepted if they suscribe to "low comedy." Women are ostracized if they participate in low humor... It's not as easy for women to get away with fart jokes, and although bodily humor is becoming more prevalent among women, it is still not the forefront. A lot of men suscribe to low humor on the internet, and therefore, a large part of readers/etc are men.

The other thing I thought was really interesting about ROFLcon was the presence of Anonymous. It was unannounced on the website (it was slotted as "mystery" on the schedule) and I was excited about going when I heard. They recently protested in Boston at the scientology center.

So as they started showing their video about fighting scientology and whatnot, I felt really good about it, thinking that this is an organization I could wholeheartedly support. I'm not against religion or believing in whatever you want to believe in (sure, Aliens. Believe in it. I don't have a problem with that.) But I am truly against an organization that bases itself entirely around money. Because they are a "religion" they are tax exempt. To learn more within the church, you have to "donate" thousands of dollars. Why do we mostly hear about celebrities being scientologists? Because they can afford it.

So as Anonymous got on with their presentation (it was 5 people in the Guy Faukes mask - thats their thing) I quickly discovered that this wasn't about exposing the truths about a "religion" or changing the recognition of Scientology, it was about making mischief and having "fun." Most of the answers the Anons gave were about them "having fun" making trouble for scientology.

And thats where I found my issue. I certianly couldn't support a "Project Mayhem" sort of organization that wasn't there to make a difference, but to have "fun". They talk about morality and exposing the truths (they use the term "Moral Fags" on their website and within their own community) but trying to expose an organization "for fun" and not to make a difference sounded like it had no morality behind it at all.

I'm not saying what Anonymous is doing is wrong, or that everyone within Anonymous feels like they're just doing this for fun, but having those 5 represent an organization full of thousands of people was a poor decision in my opinion, and it really rubbed me the wrong way.

This guy signed the lunchbox (which I bought) he designed for the conference. He was realllllly nice and very humble.

That's another thing. Out of all of the "internet celebrities" that were at the conference, The Brothers Chapman of Homestar Runner were probably the cockiest people there. I was really turned off by that. Everyone else was incredibly humble and flattered by the amount of people that showed up to see them.

Leeroy Jenkins was the MC. Only my little brother knew who he was. And the WOW people in the audience. Holy God. Hahaha.

Maybe I'll talk a bit more about it later. I haven't even talked about the "Sleeper Hits of the Internet" yet. It was awesome.

Here are some verbal highlights:

- MET THE BROTHERS CHAPS. One of them used to live around the corner from me in Brooklyn. His wife loved LOLSecretz. Holy shit, you guys, the guys that make Strongbad emails fucking KNOW WHO I AM.

- Signed autographs. SIGNED AUTOGRAPHS.

- Interviewed for Current TV's segment on "Internet fame" (though this is mostly owing to the fact that I was friends with Conor Knighton in college.)

- Ryan became BFFs with the guys from JibJab.com which contributed to an increasingly mustachioed experience (see photos below).

- Got to flex my "former literary agent" muscles with Joe Peacock of Mentally Incontinent.

- Was hit on awkwardly by tons of awkward nerds.

- Drunkenly allowed my boyfriend to affix seven temporary tattoos of a pole-dancing dog across my chest. That's right, I put the "ass" back in "classy."

P.S. As a closing note, I'm sorry for any of my readers who live there, but Boston is literally the worst city in the world. My reasons for reaching this true conclusion are as follows: a) How about some street signs, guys? Ryan and I got lost multiple times in Somerville because we couldn't figure out what street we were on, due to the fact that street signs only indicated the crossing streets, not the one we were currently on. b) Your public transportation system closes at midnight? Is everyone who lives in Boston under the age of 18? c) Last call is at 1:30? Last call is at 1:30 where I live... IN SUBURBAN CONNECTICUT. d) Every time I got in my car and tried to drive in a straight line along one street, there was at least one jerkface doing a three-point turn in an intersection. e) Your Chinese food is awful (I realize this is an n=1 sample size, but given the rest of the terrible evidence against you, you don't get the benefit of the doubt). f) You all have a chip on your shoulder and are extremely rude. How did New Yorkers get the reputation of being the assholes? We stopped a pedestrian on the corner of Vassar St. and Mass Ave to ask for a recommendation on where to eat. He stared at us like we were peons and then said, "Uh, I don't know, I live in a different neighborhood. But I saw some white kids carrying sushi coming from that direction, so maybe there's sushi over there." Oh, he was also white. Riding a bike. If you ever stopped a New Yorker and asked them for a food/drink recommendation, they would talk your ear off with suggestions while you slowly starved to death. g) Everything else.

I recommend watching the South Park clips first, then the others but do what suits you. One note, I left off the "Leave Britney Alone" guy because I find that one creepy and don't enjoy watching it. Not just one to take things at face value, I have to say that as we watched all these last night, I was really struck by the whole phenomenon of Youtube celebrity. It's easy to brush it off and laugh at them but ,on another level, I think it's amazing that these little videos have been seen by so many people. Look at the view counts when you watch the clips... the numbers are ridiculous. It really is a paradigm shift. It turns out that democratically chosen entertainment is far more eclectic and even offbeat than what I ever would have imagined ten years ago. Hollywood would love to be able to bottle whatever magic has drawn 18,000,000 people to watch "Chocolate Rain" but they simply can't, because that's not how this medium works. I like that very much. Besides that, how fun is it to have celebrities with names like Afro Ninja, Laughing Baby and Star Wars Kid!? What a wonderful subversion of the whole concept of celebrity!
