Our friends in Japan will soon be able to free their USB ports from the tyranny of charging SIXAXISes (SIXAXES?), as Sony has announced they'll soon be releasing an AC adapter that can charge two PS3 peripherals. It's coming to Japan on Dec. 18 for 2,800 yen (about $28 USD). No, we don't have a date on a U.S. release yet, but, our knowledgable friends at PS3 Fanboy hypothesize it will be cheaper when it reaches our shores.

Have you backed up your files lately? If not, you risk losing them forever.

No one should rely on any one storage device for their data. Always keep your files in multiple locations, including usb thumbdrives, CD or DVD, external hard drives, and other mediums.

Lethbridge College students have access to their internal college “Z” drives, which offer 750MB of space, but students should save their data on portable drives as well, to minimize the risk of data loss, says Dean Johnson, manager of network services at Lethbridge College.

“Don’t rely on any one thing,” says Johnson. “Use online storage services such as Google or Windows Skydrive.”

Online storage services, including Box.net, allow students to access their files from anywhere with an internet connection. The storage services double as a back-up location for those irreplaceable files.

There are online services dedicated to automatically backing up your files via a small program you install on your computer. Two examples are Carbonite.com, $40 per year, and Mozy.com, $4.95 per month. Either provides incredible peace of mind, and are automatic, so you don’t have to think about it.

With Carbonite and Mozy, they backup all the files you have selected the first time, which takes a while, but only backup the files that have been changed or updated after that.

Another benefit of storing your data online is you can access it from anywhere, as opposed to “Z” drives, which are only accessible on college campus.

Keep data in multiple places in case something happens to one of the sources, so in the case of a hard drive failure, loss of a usb thumbdrive, or a fire, you’re not at a loss, or forced to recreate a report or essay you spent hours or days on.

The college does not keep back-ups of the student “Z” drive, so it’s important not to rely on it as the only storage source, Johnson says.

Information Technology Services doesn’t monitor the data either, though it does monitor quotas automatically.

Student receive an automated email if they go over the allotted 750MB to alert them they need to reduce the number of files they have stored.

However, for Communication Arts and Multimedia in particular, that space fills up very fast, which is why students are encouraged to use external hard drives for their recorded video and graphics work.

“Keep your data on your person,” says Johnson, referring to portable storage.

How do I boot from USB?
It’s not possible as far as I know. Not with the A09 bios version anyw

How do I boot from USB?
It's not possible as far as I know. Not with the A09 bios version anyway (latest). Because of this, the only way I know to install any operating system is to use the dell cd/dvd-unit. I do not at this writing moment know if you can a non-Dell slim cd drive in the dell housing, I'll try to get back to you on that. A network installation may be possible, never had a reason to research it though.

Can I improve the CPU cooling?
It is possible to fit a 40mm fan into the case, which would make less noise and perhaps move more air. However: DO NOT REMOVE THE STOCK CPU COOLING SINK, unless it's somehow completely broken of course. In most systems poor cooling is the unfortunate standard and at best the cooling will be as poor as before a "remove and reseat" but perhaps even worse due to loosened surface connections etc.

What causes random shut downs?
A common problem on the L400. The cooling is just not good enough. Due to the small space it's also close to impossible to fit anything else in there instead of the stock cooling. If you are experiencing sudden shut downs you are most likely suffering from overheating. What you can do is set the processor to work on a lower setting (500Mhz instead of 700MHz) in the bios. On this setting you can even use the L400 without a fan, although it is not recommended in the long run. XP runs quite happily on this lower cpu speed.

The fan is so noisy, what can I do?
Stock fan sounds like a huge, tormented bumblebee? That's also standard... I went so far as to buy a new fan directly from Dell but this only changed the pitch of the whine/noise and left me stranded with the same problem. I advise against buying a new fan from Dell for this reason. If your computer is still under warranty you can of course let Dell try and replace it since you won't pay anything for it. If your warranty has run out you have two options: 1. Leave it alone and try to ignore the noise. 2. Replace or remove the fan yourself and hope for the best. (3. Sell the computer to some hobby modder with nothing better to do!)

Does Linux work on it?
There are a few Linux distributions that work right away, for example Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux. One potential issue that could cause you to not be able to install Linux at all is that the cd drive that comes with the L400 seems to be a bit rare and sometimes may require custom boot options to start your Linux installation. See this link for examples using Puppy Linux.

And on a more general note:

Is it worth the effort?
The L400 is, in spite of some flaws, definetly a very useful and handy machine. Size and weight are two of the biggest advantages. If you can get your hands on one of these machines for a low price and you're ready to put some effort into adapting it to your needs you should be more than happy after the tweaking.

What else could theoretically be modified?
If someone had a motherboard specification or just high technical knowledge it should be possible to find ways to power internally placed w-lan, bluetooth etc. This would be a big step forward, but would also require soldering which lessens the number of people that can actually perform these upgrades. Areas of interest: rerouting the 1 internal usb 1.1 port to usb 2 speed (via cardbus somehow?), adding wlan & bluetooth modules (via ide/docking?), making universal access to the proprietary ide-port on the back possible.

Written on a silent (!), CF-based L400 running an nLited XP SP3. It's alive!

More at Akihabara News

I don't mix very well with technology. I currently find the specs of my laptop to be somewhat overkill since all I use it for is internet and word processor for leisure stuff (I don't have any courses that expect me to write stuff, I prefer to handwrite my notes). I do carry carry two USBs with me, a leatherbound 512MB one and a 4GB one that I bought at Future Shop for 10 bucks. Well...I haven't use any of them since school started, they've been hanging around my neck just because my desk is cluttered with too much junk.

The Rei USB key can be bought for 57 USD. If you've got money then by all means go for it. But as far as weird USB devices go, I prefer to stick to my USB Gouf Custom (Which is still incomplete, I still need to apply pastels for weathering).

Just got back my calculus quiz and found out I made a retarded mistake. You probably could tell that I'm pretty demoralized, sorry about this useless piece of entry.

The dimensions of the new Honda city are - 4,395mm long, 1,695mm wide and 1,470mm tall. Honda designers have taken some design cues from civic especially for the front look. Regarding production of the new CITY, HATC will support the startup of production in developing countries including ASEAN markets, India and China.

The front is definitely inspired by the likes of the European Honda Civic and the Honda FCX Clarity. The headlamps feature reflector lense instead of the more expensive projector type, which is expected at this price range. The Rear of new city looks like a mini-ish BMW 3-series with aggresive looking bumper and tail lights.

The interiors of new Honda City are light. Some markets may get a dark interior, hopefully. Our current City model come with either a dark interior for the VTEC & a light interior for the i-DSI. It features a clean and simple interior with integrated audio and the new design Honda steering wheel.

The City has grown in every dimension. Everything is laid out nicely, and there is a quality feel to all the controls. The plastics are hard, but in a solid and chunky sort of way. The steering wheel is now adjustable for reach as well as height, which is a really excellent feature for this segment of the market.

Another nice touch is the iPod compatible USB connector. Although the Jazz already has this, the City has a very nicely integrated system. The display section of the audio system is hinged, opening to reveal a short USB cable which will accept your iPod cable.

There is a little felt-lined compartment for your iPod. Once installed, you can control your iPod via the car's audio system. The City doesn't have a CD player, so you need an iPod, or other compatible MP3 player to take your songs with you. Still, it's nicely done.

The New City’s i-VTEC 118bhp engine is developed for all-round performance. It delivers high output, fuel efficiency and environmental-friendly performance.

In the automatic model of city the unique Paddle Shift gear option allows you to switch gears without using the clutch pedal. The 5 gear automatic trasmission allows you to change gear ratios automatically-freeing you from having to shift gears manually.

The right paddle is for shifting up while the left paddle is for shifting down, which is the same as for an F1 machine. In D-range mode, the driver can shift up and down by using the paddles, while automatically returning to normal AT driving mode when a sensor determines the car is cruising.

On the other hand, in S-range, the mode does not revert automatically to AT driving mode, which allows the driver to enjoy a manual transmission-like driving feel.
Intake valve timing and valve lift settings switch to meet both low- and high-speed driving requirements. Optimized valve overlap in the low-, mid- and high-speed ranges enhances intake and exhaust efficiency for excellent performance with plenty of torque throughout all speed ranges.

The new Honda City comes fully loaded with all active and passive safety features including ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) with , Dual SRS airbags, pre-tensioner seat belts andG-Force Control Technology body with a crush-proof survival zone.

The front body structure of the new Honda City ensures advanced pedestrian safety features. With the new City, these safety features are now a standard offering across the entire range of Honda in the Indian market.

We know that the pen is mightier than the sword, but is the pen drive mightier that the hard drive?

We know that the pen is mightier than the sword, but is the pen drive mightier that the hard drive? A USB flash, jump, or pen drive is something that most people own and use to store files. While these drives are useful for backups and file transfers, they can do much more. As a solid state drive they are not as fragile as your computer's hard drive. One way to get more out of your USB drive is to run applications from it. Many applications have been created or adapted to run completely from your USB drive. That means that you can use your programs, bookmarks, and files from any computer. This empowers you to leave your computer at home and carry your USB drive instead as it is smaller, lighter, more rugged, and less likely to be stolen that your laptop. Many of the portable apps, as they are called, are free. There are two main "platforms" or launchers - U3 and PortableApps. U3 comes on certain USB drives, but is not worth paying extra for since PortableApps is a free equivalent. You can many other individual programs. Here is a list of my favorite portable apps.
