It’s early morning, I walk David as far as the bankomat (ATM) so I can get cash to pay for my hostel and he continues on his way to the bus station and Riga. It’s really a shame, too. I kept joking with him during our crazy day that I was going to be completely stranded when he left since I didn’t speak ANY of the local languages. I had no idea how right I was.

So anyway, near Vilnius is a little resort town called Trakai. It’s in the middle of several lakes and there’s a castle on an island.

[caption id="attachment_393" align="alignleft" width="128" caption="Castle and boat..."][/caption]

The Lithuanians go there for summer holiday and it’s fairly inexpensive to get to from Vilnius, so off I go. I catch a bus and plan on just wandering by myself, seeing the castle, then heading back, where I’ve got my own 18:30 bus to Riga to catch. I should know better by now.

I get to Trakai, head into the Tourist Information office and grab a walking tour map and head in the direction of the castle. At one point I stop to read what my guide says and I notice a girl, who had been taking pictures, is leaning over my shoulder and looking at my map. Of course, I shift slightly so she can have a better view and we start talking about the route to the castle. Well… we sort of start talking. She’s Russian, from Moscow, and only speaks Russian. Then I meet her two

[caption id="attachment_399" align="alignright" width="128" caption="Natasha, Dimitri and Svetlana"][/caption]

friends, who also only speak Russian. This is the first time of the day I wish David had stuck around. Figure that every time I say something like “we tried to communicate” or “I wasn’t quite sure what she said” I was wishing David were with me. The reason for this day long wistfulness was that I ended up spending the whole day with Svetlana, Natasha and Dimitri, who were all on a day break from acrobatic school! We did a lot of gesturing and pointing and talking slowly and going back and forth and somehow we managed to communicate all day long. Svetlana and I were the photographers in the group (not that the other two didn’t have cameras, but we were the ones

[caption id="attachment_394" align="alignleft" width="72" caption="Almost falling in"][/caption]

who always had them out – especially Svetlana) and we were trying to find all sorts of interesting angles and different looks for things. She and I kept looking at each other’s screens, seeing how the shots had come out.

As we approached the castle, they got stopped by a guy who led sailing boat tours around the island. It was obviously more than I could afford by myself, but with the four of us pitching in, it wasn’t that bad so we went on a boat ride and got even more cool shots.

[caption id="attachment_396" align="alignright" width="128" caption="Me on the boat"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_395" align="alignleft" width="128" caption="Me and Svetlana"][/caption]

Then, inside the castle itself, they had mock-ups of cages and stocks and various other tortures. Naturally, we got pictures.

Back in Vilnius, we all decided to have dinner before they took off in their train and I went to Riga. Originally, we were going to go to a crepe place but for reasons unknown to me, we ended up at McDonald’s. While sitting outside eating

[caption id="attachment_397" align="alignleft" width="128" caption="Me in the stocks"][/caption]

(Svetlana refused and got bananas) Natasha got very angry about America’s incursion into all things foreign, specifically McDonald’s (which, I found out from Imbi, is called Mackers in Australia). She was quite irate, which was actually kinda fun. Natasha had decided early on that she couldn’t be bothered trying to work it out, so she taught me a few Russian words and spoke to me in rapid fire Russian. I’m sure if I had stayed with them for two more days, I would be fluent – out of necessity if nothing else!

[caption id="attachment_398" align="alignright" width="72" caption="The McDonald's controversy"][/caption]

Afterwards, goodbyes were said, emails exchanged and I got on my bus for Riga. The bus driver was on a bit of a power trip and decided unlocking the bathroom was just something he couldn’t be bothered to do, so I spent 4 ½ hours needing to pee! The one stop we had, I didn’t have the money for the pay toilet. I finally went in Riga, before I left the bus station, and headed off to find my hostel.

So I took a train to Warsaw, then I had an hour or so layover until my bus to Vilnius. I must have l

So I took a train to Warsaw, then I had an hour or so layover until my bus to Vilnius. I must have looked incredibly helpless because when I asked for directions, the woman at the information desk actually CAME OUT of her little glass box and walked me to the stop. So I was good to go. Of course, I was hungry and set out to find food, which wasn’t an easy task at 22:30. I did find a McDonald’s but I was feeling rebellious (I was in Warsaw after all) and thought they were price gouging so I didn’t eat there. My bad. I ended up having potato chips and Coca Cola Zero for dinner. Yum!

The Bus finally arrived and I sat next to a guy named David. David was cool, from Canada by way of Prague (where he’d been working for the past month as a waiter) but his lineage was all over Europe – which meant he could speak like 146 different language (okay, maybe only three or four, but still) including Russian (This will come back later).

David has no Hostel booked for the night (he only needs one night since he’s leaving for Riga early the next morning and from there, St. Petersburg), so he decides to see of my place has an extra bed. I have directions, which involve a bus, but after waiting for a bit, we decide to walk. (This is after we get the wrong bus to drive us to where the right bus is supposed to come – thanks to David being able to speak Russian to the driver.) So we have a really poor map in my “Let’s Go” guidebook which we follow (Again, for those of you who have been following along, you know my map reading skills leave much to be desired – and this time, just to make matters worse, the Hostel is off the grid of my in book map) to finally get to the place. It’s a hike, let me tell you, but we do see a good part of town (and a pet hospital when we overshoot the Hostel itself and I insist on walking further).

Of course, when we get there, they have no extra beds for the night, but they do say they’ll hold David’s name for a cancellation just in case. They also hold his pack. So now, unburdened, we head out to explore Vilnius. We know a couple of things we want to see (we have been staring at a guide book all morning plus we’d gotten some recommendations) so we immediately head out for The Museum of Genocide. I know, fun way to start the day, huh? Again, we get lost trying to find the place, which is in the former Soviet headquarters, and end up double backing a couple of times but finally, we find it! And, lucky us, there is no

[caption id="attachment_377" align="alignright" width="72" caption="Secrets in the Museum of Genocide"][/caption]

entrance fee! So we go in and it mostly covers the soviet occupation and the resistance movements. There’s some rather interesting things inside but the most fascinating is the Holomodor, the systematic starvation of millions of Ukrainians by Stalin. Estimates put deaths anywhere from 9 to 30 million people over the course of a dozen years or so. It was like a man-made dust bowl. Just terrifying.

Down in the basement, though, they have the prison and torture areas left mostly how they were. The Russians were almost as good as the Germans when it came to torture. So good,

[caption id="attachment_380" align="alignleft" width="72" caption="Torture room"][/caption]

in fact, David and I started devising Survivor: Russian Prison. Our favorite was the room which would fill with water and the small metal island on which the prisoner could stand. In the winter, the water would freeze and of course, the prisoner would have no shoes.

[caption id="attachment_381" align="alignright" width="128" caption="I'm in prison..."][/caption]

And just to show it wasn’t all evil, check out this sign for the exit! I swear I thought it was leading towards the Ministry of Silly Walks!

Upon leaving the Museum, we walked down the main street,

[caption id="attachment_378" align="alignleft" width="128" caption="Ministry of Silly Walks"][/caption]

passing by the national theatre for the second time. This time, though, I had to snap a picture of the sculpture which over looked the entrance. Just amazing in its power and majesty. Further on and we made it to the remaining tower of the castle on the hill in the middle of town. Again with the stairs to get up,

[caption id="attachment_376" align="alignleft" width="128" caption="National Theatre"][/caption]

but it was okay. The view was spectacular! So there we were, looking over the city, and checking the guidebook. We decided we wanted to find Frank Zappa’s head. What’s that you say? What is Frank Zappa’s head doing in the capitol of Lithuania? No one is really sure. All we know is that someone in Vilnius is a fan and created a 4 meter high metal pole upon which rests a bust of the leader of the Mothers of Invention. So we’re on top of the tower,

[caption id="attachment_382" align="alignright" width="128" caption="David and Me"][/caption]

looking out and trying to figure out where this bust might be when we get to talking with another tourist. Turns out, he speaks Lithuanian and when he hears about Zappa’s head, immediately calls his friend to ask where it is. He gives us directions, takes a double picture for us, and heads out. We follow shortly and our quest for Zappa’s head begins in earnest.

Now, if this was a Hollywood movie, there would be lots of subplots, an act 3 complication all leading up to success in the last 10 minutes, where we would find the sculpture and get there at the same as Harold and Kumar and the ghost of Neil

[caption id="attachment_385" align="alignleft" width="72" caption="This way to the monument?"][/caption]

Patrick Harris. Thankfully, though, this isn’t a movie and the guy’s directions were pretty spot on. We found the head with no problems and then spent a good twenty minutes pondering its existence, which may in fact be why it was built there. What better tribute to

Zappa than to have people coming from all over the world to stare up at something and think “Why in the world is this here?” Personally, I believe it would have appealed to his sense of humor and general moral philosophy.

From there, we were both a bit tired so we thought we’d head back towards the Hostel, grab a beverage along the way, and maybe check out UZ, the independent republic in the middle of the city which broke off in the late 90s and declared itself an independent nation, complete with constitution and military (twelve guys – enough for a minion). Ahhhh… if only plans worked the way you intend them to.

Just before we crossed the bridge over the stream (which was covered in Padlocks, which are put there by couples, engraved with both their names – a cool tradition I think) we see a troupe of performance artists, about a dozen or so, singing and dancing around a man on a gurney. Before we can ask what’s going on (or get out of harm’s way) the guy on the gurney is replaced by, you guessed it, me. There are people singing, throwing chicken feathers,

[caption id="attachment_387" align="alignleft" width="128" caption="performance art"][/caption]

taking pictures and video and one guy drawing a caricature. There’s someone rubbing my head and someone else feeding me grapes. This goes on for about ten minutes, after which I’m helped up and told that now I will have a beautiful day. I

[caption id="attachment_388" align="alignright" width="72" caption="cariqature (with a q)"][/caption]

thank them, take my caricature, and David and I go looking for a bar. Now it’s definitely time for a drink.

Just on the other side of the water is a great looking little bar which would be perfect for our needs. Great scenery, not too crowded and on the way home. Unfortunately, there are no seats available and the wait staff can’t be bothered to help. So we walk by a couple of times and nothing. We start to walk home. We stop and decide to try again. Still nothing so we walk past the bar and end up in an artist enclave where we get pressed into adding our own color to a painting in progress by a Lithuanian girl who was all set to move in with artists right then. But still, no drinks so we walk back past our bar. Do you think there were any seats available?

You’re right. There were none. Again we start for home. We get about 10 meters, maybe, and David says “What about asking someone if we can share their table?” can you tell we REALLY wanted to enjoy this place? There was a reason , I’m sure. So we go back and see the back of a dark haired girl, sitting by herself. We approach cautiously and I ask if she’d mind if we joined her. “Not at all,” she said. So we sat. While we were waiting for another ice age…I mean for our waitress, we started talking. The girl’s name was Tiina and then we were joined by her boyfriend Antti. They were from a city in Finland called Vassa and before you could

say Teemu Selanne, we were fast friends, talking and jabbering away. A few beers later and we all decided to check out the independent republic. Much laughter ensued and by this point, we were all hungry. Antti’s guide book mentioned a view spot up the street which was attached to a restaurant. So we went looking. The outside wasn’t much, but inside, the place was fantastic! We got a table near the edge and watched the sunset over Vilnius. Then we ate and drank and moved inside when it got cold. At some point, I promised to go to Vassa (I’m gonna head there on the 19th or so, where a party is being organized to meet the American). In the

midst of all this, Antti handed over postcards to me and David, asking us to write them out to his friends and family. So we did. Imagine writing a postcard to the sister of someone you’ve only just met. In fact, don’t imagine it, I encourage you to do it next time you’re traveling. If you meet someone, and you’re hanging out, ask them to write a postcard for you, especially if they speak a foreign language. It’s completely random but just crazy enough that no one’s going to think you’re completely off your rocker.

We closed the place down (they actually had to ask us to leave, silently, pleading with their eyes – very different than the rude guy in Prague), said goodnight and David and finally headed back to the hostel, where we still weren’t sure if he had a bed. Turns out he did, in the bunk above mine, and we went to sleep, knowing we were both getting up early.

And by the way, my nephew is SO cool they put his initials on the grates around all the trees!

In sfirsit am ajuns si noi in Kernave.

WRONG!!!

Am decis sa mergem acum cind aveau loc manifestatii dedicate zilei incoronarii unicului Rege Lituanian, Mindaugas.

Iata doar citeva:

You know you’ve been in Lithuania too long, when …
you only eat in restaurant-chains, which start with Čili

you put ketchup on your pizza and think that’s the way Italians do it

half of your friends disappear to work in the British Isles or Scandinavia or the United States and you think that’s normal

you have become tired of explaining to your friends and relatives at home, that you are a.) not in Latvia b.) not in Russia and c.) Riga isn’t the capital of the Baltic

with a meal you drink either beer or tea

basketball has become the most important thing in your life

there is only one beer for you: Švyturys Extra

half of the population working as “managers” seems reasonable to you

tall blonde beauties in short skirts are nothing special for you anymore

during winter, instead of looking for a thermostat to adjust the temperature in your room, you just open the window

you learned everything about the glorious Lithuanian language, and now you get angry about ignorant people denying the existence of a Lithuanian language or, worse, consider it some branch of Slavic languages

you’ve learned the hard way that a triangle means women’s toilet and a triangle upside down means men’s

during a long night of partying you went out pissing in the cold streets because there was only one unisex toilet in the whole pub

you think drunkards shouting at you in Russian are a normal part of life

when you enter a bus and there is no strange smell you think there’s something wrong

buses without antennae seem awkward to you

anything goes wrong you blame the Russians, or the Polish or the rest of the world

you think hot chocolate means melted chocolate and you love it

you see someone smiling in public, you think: well, a bloody foreigner

a meal for you must contain either potato or meat, but usually both

you start leaving out the articles, even in English and your native language

you become scared meeting big old babushkas in furs, because they trample down everything in their way

you are afraid crossing a street, especially at zebra crossings or traffic lights

you feel guilty entering a flat wearing your shoes

you consider cranberry the best flavour for water, juice and vodka

you think beer is a soft drink not an alcoholic beverage, only vodka is

going to the opera, the concert hall or the theatre is just a usual thing to do in the evenings

forenames like Christmas’ tree, mermaid, amber or wind seem normal to you

everything 50m above sea-level seems like a mountain

you start counting the ground floor as first floor

someone, you haven’t known for more than three years, talks to you, you try to get rid of him as soon as possible

you got a one centimetre haircut, bought a fake leather jacket and a black cap (if you are male) OR: you bought a skirt at the size of a belt and don’t leave the house without tons of make-up (if you are female)

you consider smoked pig’s ears a tasty beer snack

you love the Baltic Sea and go swimming there at nearly any temperature

you love going to the Sauna, but always leave your trunks/bikini on

for you, garlic has become an ingredient just like salt or pepper

you consider Lithuania the best and worst place on earth – at the same time

you teach everybody that in medieval times the Lithuanian Duchy ranged from the Baltic to the Black Sea

you put an “as”, “a” or “is” at the end of foreign names, so you can conjugate them

you carry around five cell phones and several cards from eight different phone-companies, so that you always get the best price.

You consider fastening your seatbelt a sign of weakness and are not surprised if a car hasn’t seatbelts at all.

In your eyes Coca Cola is the unhealthiest drink in the world and that drinking lots of beer, sugary juice and bread drink prolongs your life

you haven't seen a bright sky for months and you don't miss it anymore

you consider rain the normality and sunshine a special weather phenomenon

Mul igatahes on ka sel korral pakkuda kahe Oskarile nomineerinud režissööri animatsioonid - Mark Osborne-i "More" (6:23) ja Chris Landreth-i "Bingo" (4:22).

2004 aastal õnnestus Mark Osbornel sellise tunnustuse osaliseks saada.

Mark Osborne sai stipendiumi John Simon Guggenheim Memoriaalfondilt.

Simon Guggenheim oli Solomon R. Guggenheimi noorem vend, kelle asutatud Solomon R. Guggenheimi Fond on ehitanud mitmeid muuseume üle terve maailma. Tuntumad neist on Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New Yorkis, USA-s ja Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Bilbaos, Hispaanias.

H O T Ă R Î R E A

Sovietului Suprem al R.S.S. Moldoveneşti

Despre recunoaşterea Republicii independente Lituaniene

La 11 martie a.c. noul Consiliu Suprem al Republicii Lituaniene a adoptat Actul despre restabilirea Statului independent Lituanian.

Sovietul Suprem al R.S.S. Moldoveneşti:

recunoaşte necondiţionat dreptul poporului lituanian, ca şi al oricărui alt popor, la autodeterminare şi la crearea statului său independent;

recunoaşte Consiliul Suprem al Republicii Lituaniene ca parlament ales în mod democratic de către popor, precum şi guvernul Republicii Lituaniene;

declară că R.S.S. Moldovenească nu are pretenţii economice, financiare sau de alt ordin faţă de Republica Lituaniană. În cazul apariţiei unor astfel de probleme, ele urmează să fie soluţionate prin negocieri;

confirmăm dorinţa R.S.S. Moldoveneşti de a întreţine relaţii diplomatice, politice, economice şi culturale directe cu Republica Lituaniană şi propune Consiliului Suprem al Republicii Lituaniene să se facă un schimb de reprezentanţe permanente;

Or. Chişinău,

31 mai 1990.

Nr. 63-XII.

8 reasons why you should visit Lithuania and Vilnius

Vyto Paukščio parašytas 8 priežastis kodėl turėtumėte aplankyti Vilnių, keturiomis priežastimis papildė mano (lietuviškos kilmės) maispejsinė draugė Marytė iš Kanados.

By Vytas Paukstys on Sep 9, 2007 in Places to visit, About the city

1. Architecture. There are a lot of different architecture to see. The ones that like travelling to see the cities, old buildings, churches and hear some history behind it - Vilnius is the best place to be. Lithuanian history is very rich in stories, dating a thousand years back.

2. Nightlife. Vilnius is a new Prague or Paris. I read this in one of the blogs on internet, from the prople that came to Vilnius. There are a lot of clubs and pubs to have fun. You can choose from beer pubs with Lithuanian style, Irish pubs (Dubliner), strip clubs, dancing places and a lot more. Kaunas, a city 100km from Vilnius is more a clubbing city, there are parties with well-known Djs every weekend.

3. Celebrate your party in Vilnius: birthday or bachelor. Clubs and bars are already mentioned. But go fishing, skydiving, paragliding, drive 4×4 in the woods (if you find a normal team of off-roadsters, you will definitely never forget the experience, as they will let you do anything you want), have some incredible acrobatic flights, rent a sports car in the Rally track. And I can continue the list. Sure, you can do it in your own country, but then follow the post…

4. Prices. All of the above you can do very cheap. E.g. 15 minute flight with an acrobatic plane with all the programme will cost you something like 500 LT. 10 minutes with a European champion on a Rally track will cost you 350 LTL. 10 minutes go-karting will cost you only 50 LTL. Beer in an expensive pub will cost you 7 LTL (2 EUros).

5. Vilnius is changing and getting more expensive. After 5 years it will be different. See the change.

6. Visit all the nicest places in the country. Visit seashore. Visit Palanga, Nida, Juodkrante. These are the nicest places in Lithuania. See the dunes, one of the most amazing sights near the sea. Or just stay in a calm appartment just near the see. Palanga can be crowded during summer, but such places like Preila, Pervalka or Nida are very calm if you want to rest. Anyway, rent a car and see all those places. This would be the best way to travel, if you want to see more.

7. Come to Vilnius for business reason. Now is the best time to do business in Lithuania. The economy is booming, every business in Lithuania welcomes partnership and is really interested in expanding the borders to other countries. There are a lot of smart people in Lithuania. A lot of people are moving outsite the country, but these are mainly workers, people that work in construction. Intelligent business part stays, because there are plenty of things to do.

8. Continue your trip to other Baltic states. They all have places to see and parties to attend.

Marytė sako:

9. Try the food. Fabulous authentic Lithuanian meals and new cuisine. Something for everyone's taste and wash it down with --vyturys beer, the best you'll ever taste.
10. Visit the forests, go mushroom picking.
11. Visit the Bee Museum. One of the most fascinating places to see. The Amber Museum.
12. Drive through the rural areas to get a flavour of quaint villages, dotted farms throughout the land.

Dimineata incepe la 6. Cu ochii intredeschisi ajung la statie. Statia plina de muncitori. In troleibus se mai aude cineva discutind, in lituaniana evident.
OK. Taip, Je sais, bet I forgot how to say автомобиль en francais.

Interesanta discutie s-a primit :)

Dimineata, racoare, soare, liniste, aer curat. O dimineata caracteristica Vilniusului.
Adormita in admiratie aud vorba romaneasca. Imi venea sa-i cuprind pe fiecare si sa le multumesc ca vorbesc aici, in Vilnius, romaneste!!!!

While it's situated happily on the Baltic coast, Lithuania has a hot side. Like their Argentinian cousins, the Lithuanians have been known to tear up a dance floor with their smoldering and sexy tangoes. They've evn gone so far as to proclaim their capital city of Vilnius the Eastern European capital of the dance form the way Paris is to Western Europe or Buenos Aires is to South America. And what better time to toast the colder reaches of Europe than the summer solstice-- when days get longer and temperatures perk up?

The third annual Baltic Tango Festival will be held in Vilnius, a fitting contrast of old world romance to the tango's Latin passion, from June 26-28. Several genres of the dance will be incorporated into the weekend programming, including the orchestral sweeps of the milonga, the ardor of the romanza, and the vocalizations of the cancion. There'll be a touch of the modern as well with some electric instruments mingling with standbys such as the flamenco guitar. If you can only put your 50 Lt (a little over $20 USD) to one show, make it Irmantas Bačelis' "The Last Caligula's Tango."

Many performances will also be stationed in restaurants which kills two birds with one stone. However, if you want to get in on the action (and who doesn't?) you can also sign up for 90-minute lessons with some of the greats for 40 Lt (a little over $15 USD).
