If you are looking for a gentle bathroom with a sense of harmony, then classical theme will be the best option for you. In case of classical appearance:  simple colors and least accessories utilization give your bathroom a glimpse of illumination and spacious look.

 Decorating your bathroom with artistic themes is a great idea and you will find a huge choice for artistic expressions. Water themes are very well accepted and fashionable with endless choices such as: Dolphins, sea sells, Fish, under water scenery and more. In light soothing shades you can start your bathroom redecoration with basic aquatic color for instance blue and green.  The natural and relaxing colors can set the mood.

 If you are not interested in theme based bathroom decoration then you can think of the bathroom color, lighting and ventilation and changing of few bathroom accessories, But all these things should be done properly. Few of the decorating points are as follows:

 Paint: Think of the paint of the bathroom. You can use both washable paint and wall paper. Use the washable paint where water contact is more and use the wall paper where the water contact is less. If you are using the wall paper on the certain area of the wall which often comes into the water contact then the wall paper may be separated from the wall.

 Flooring:

 You bathroom floor should be easy to clean, water resistant and safe to use. For easy and quick bathroom do it your self project you should choose to use ant-static, anti-bacterial   floor tiles which you can peel and stick over the existing floor easily without taking any help. Non-slip floor is always recommended to protect your family from injury due to fall. If you family is associated with small children and aging people then you should be very careful towards the safety of your family members.

 Allow natural light to your bathroom:

 Allow natural light to your bathroom. The natural light is very essential for your bathroom to make it more inviting as well as to give it an impression of a spacious bathroom. For allowing natural lights you should always keep an option for a window or a sky light or better to have both.

 Use mirrors:

 Mirrors are very stylish and essential bathroom decoration accessory. Mirrors are very effective at reflecting the bathroom space. Place the mirror in front of the bathroom sink which will help to reflect all the light in the bathroom.

 Use extractor fans:

 Extractor fans are very lucrative in making your bathroom fresh and odor free. The extractor fan draws out all the stored air that helps the bathroom to fresh and ventilated.

 Changing few bathroom accessories:

 After changing the color, floor and lighting: you should change few things such as shower curtain and windows curtain to give your bathroom a perfect look and feel as this the most utilitarian room in the home.

The downstairs resident could hear water dripping inside the wall. We checked the plumbing in both units, the upstairs unit had a problem.

The plastic drain pipe (ABS) had cracked just below the tee. Water was leaking down the wall when the upstairs unit ran the kitchen plumbing. I've included a video discribing how we fixed the problem. It may be helpful to you. The wall was dried out before closing the wall. No dry rot was found.

You may remember many moons ago the reason I gave why I didn’t want to have bars for the first few weeks of the programme? If not, let me refresh your memory. It was mainly because I’d heard and read via a variety of sources of the dreaded ‘7 week wall’. Let me tell you, they were right. I think wall is putting it mildly cos boy oh boy have I struggled this week. I don’t really know why, it’s just been one of those weeks. I haven’t had any more temptation than normal, I haven’t had a bad week weight loss wise but I’m just really fed up with it. I was cynical at first thinking how could week 7 be any different to week 6? It certainly is though that’s for sure. Never fear! For there is light at the end of this tunnel. I’ve now well and truly broken the back of week 7 now as it’s Monday afternoon and I have my weigh in on Wednesday. I’m already feeling better. Last weekend was definitely the hardest so far but I got through it and I’ve still remained 100% abstinent since I started Lighterlife. I feel like that’s a decent achievement considering I’ve spend the last 4 days wanting to chuck the towel in all together. As I’ve said before, what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger! (Will)power to the people! I’m certainly glad I’ve come through this latest test because I’m heading straight into some more over the next few weeks. I’ll be missing my week 8 weigh in as I’m travelling with work next week, then I’m back for week 9 and away again (with work) for week 10. These conferences seemed like a good idea at the time cos they’re an eating and drinking fest but they’re going to be a very different experience this year. I’m mostly hoping that I don’t have any travel problems when if comes to taking my packs on the plane. I travel light so they’ll be in my hand Luggage. I wonder if I should just buck the trend and check a bag in anyway but then there’s the possibility that they’ll lose it! I wonder if Lighterlife do an emergency FedEx service!? Avoiding the meals will be interesting but I’m hoping they’ll mainly be Buffett type affairs. I’ll be interested to see how I get on without the support of my Lighterlife group (and the official weight measurements) as I’m essentially only going to be there once between the 16th October and the 11th November. I’ll also miss having my end of foundation photos done next week too. Hmmm, guess they’ll just have to be taken in week 9.

 

Talking of photo’s……. I mentioned in one of my first posts before I started that the wife took some pics of me. I had a look at them for the first time yesterday and I can now see the difference that everyone has been mentioning. I don’t think it’s as dramatic as some people are saying but it’s certainly noticeable. You never know, after my work commitments are out of the way, I may even surprise you and post the before and afters. Maybe I should leave it until I’m really finished. Should make it more dramatic at least.  

 

I’m also pleased to report that the scales are still moving. For some reason I get no movement whatsoever between Thursday and Sunday but I’m currently showing a 3lb loss this week. With a bit of luck that may even be 4 or 5 by weigh in on Wednesday. If I can average between 4 & 5 pounds a week for the next few weeks I’ll be over the moon. It does seem though that you just never know until you step on those scales at weigh in. I’m happy with my morning weight too as it said 18st 5lbs this morning (from 21st 6lbs 7 weeks ago). The good news about this weight is that my BMI is 34.9! Still obese but now closer to overweight and morbidly obese! Now I need to set the sights on 29.9! I’m also looking forward to my scales saying 17 stone something in the next week or two. It’s been quite some time since that last happened…….

The world is on the brink of financial meltdown, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said last night. His bleak warning came as finance ministers tried to calm the frenzy in markets that saw share prices crash by more than 20% last week.

Separately, the IMF’s chief economist predicted that shares could slump by another 20% before stabilising. G7 finance ministers pledged to take all necessary steps to support the banking system and stave off an economic slump.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the IMF, warned that the measures so far “have not yet achieved the goal of stabilising markets and bolstering confidence”.

He said: “Intensifying solvency concerns about a number of the largest US-based and European financial institutions have pushed the global financial system to the brink of systemic meltdown.” Countries would need to take further measures, including interest rate cuts and steps to bolster the banks.

Olivier Blanchard, his chief economist, said stock markets had further to fall. “At the worst, the governments will need another few weeks to make the right assessment and the stock exchanges could fall by another 20%; then there will be a turnaround,” he said.

The warnings came as G7 finance ministers, including Alistair Darling, met George Bush at the White House. “We are in this together,” the president said. “We will come through it together.” Other experts warned that the instability was likely to continue.

Mario Draghi, governor of the Bank of Italy and chairman of the Financial Stability Forum, which advises the leading economies, said he was “amazed” by what was happening and that it was “very difficult” to see the end of the crisis.

“I don’t have my crystal ball here,” he said. The panic in the stock markets was partly due to the “root psychology of major investors all over the world. You are not going to change that in a day”.

Simon Johnson, until this year the IMF’s chief economist, said he was disappointed the G7 had not produced a fully worked-out plan to fight a slump. “The financial system just got nuked and they don’t understand the full extent of it,” he said.

George Magnus, senior economic adviser at UBS, said stabilising the system was still possible but that countries had to act fast: “The most charitable response is that they have set out a framework and we will see countries filling in the details over the next three to four days. If that happens we could still be okay.”

Gordon Brown will travel to Paris today to urge European leaders to copy the British bailout programme and agree a Europe-wide plan to “recapitalise” struggling banks by taking equity stakes in them. America said this weekend it plans to do that.

In an unusual move, President Nicolas Sarkozy has invited Brown to join a meeting of eurozone heads of government to explain the merits of the UK model. A source close to the French presidency said eurozone leaders would take Britain’s initiative as a reference. “There are two competing models,” he said. “The American model, which no one wishes to draw inspiration from, and the British model. This is what everyone is talking about.”

The prime minister will first meet Sarkozy, Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European commission, and Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank. Brown will then make his pitch to the leaders of the 15 countries in the euro currency area.

A spokesman for No 10 said: “This is clearly an important moment. It is very important that Europe acts together and works together. What we have set out is a comprehensive plan which tackles the three issues of liquidity, funding and capital. Any action must now be taken internationally.”

Today’s meeting is the last opportunity for European leaders to show they are taking the necessary steps to support the banks before the markets open tomorrow. Germany has indicated that it is prepared to adopt elements of the British plan by putting capital into its banks. One sticking point may be the lack of a comprehensive guarantee for the banks.

Tomorrow the first of the British banks to be bailed out by the government’s £400 billion rescue plan will reveal how much money they want. Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), which has seen its market value fall to under £12 billion, is to ask the government to underwrite a £15 billion cash call. HBOS, Britain’s biggest provider of mortgages, is demanding up to £10 billion, while Lloyds TSB and Barclays require £7 billion and £3 billion respectively.

Although existing investors will have the right to put up the new capital, and some may do so, the rescue could leave the government owning 70% of HBOS and 50% of RBS. Crisis talks were taking place this weekend between the Treasury, the Financial Services Authority, the Bank of England and the heads of the four retail banks to decide final details.

A YouGov poll for The Sunday Times suggests the crisis has boosted Brown’s popularity. Support for Labour has risen by seven points in the past month to 33%, its highest since January. The Tories are on 43%, down three points.

The prime minister’s rating is at its highest since March, while he and Darling are regarded by voters as more trusted to deal with the crisis than David Cameron and George Osborne.

Allies of Brown have suggested this could be his “Falklands moment”, a reference to Margaret Thatcher’s rise from huge unpopularity in the early 1980s as a result of the successful war with Argentina.

El Sur exige al Norte resolver la crisis financiera mundial

Los países en desarrollo que forman parte del G-20, en el que también participa Argentina, exigieron a las principales potencias del mundo que más allá de anunciar un plan conjunto y hablar de coordinación, "es hora de pasar a la acción". Eso requiere dejar de lado la retórica y comenzar a instrumentar las medidas anunciadas conjuntamente por el G-7.

Puntualmente, los países en desarrollo solicitaron al presidente George Bush, quien participó también del encuentro del G-20 junto a Ben Bernanke y Henry Paulson, que es prioritario empezar a dar liquidez, comprar las acciones de los bancos en riesgo y garantizar a los inversores minoristas que no perderán sus depósitos. Durante toda la reunión sobrevoló la idea de que en el futuro será necesario un nuevo sistema financiero global.

"Estamos viviendo un punto de inflexión", señalaron varios ministros a la salida del encuentro. Más allá de estos señalamientos y de las necesidades de un cambio a futuro, los ministros de Economía de todo el mundo que integran el Comité Monetario y Financiero Internacional dieron su apoyo "enérgico" al plan de salvataje anunciado por el G-7 y Estados Unidos, con el objetivo de calmar la ansiedad de los inversores. Más allá de estas declaraciones, lo que sobrevoló durante todo el encuentro es que en el mediano plazo será necesario estructurar un nuevo sistema financiero internacional.

El G-7 hizo ayer un acto de humildad al reconocer ante los delegados de los países que forman parte del G-20 que ellos "fueron los que comenzaron esta crisis". Incluso el propio Dominique Strauss-Kahn, titular del FMI, reconoció el fracaso por parte de los países industrializados en la regulación del sistema financiero. Frente a esos mea culpa que sobrevuelan en todas las declaraciones pronunciadas por los funcionarios del Fondo, los países en desarrollo que integran el G-20 comenzaron a preguntarse y a exigir una respuesta más concreta. Países como Argentina, Perú y Chile le plantearon al titular del Tesoro, Henry Paulson –durante una reunión que mantuvieron ayer antes del encuentro del G-20–, que sus economías, si bien están más sólidas para enfrentar el vendaval financiero, también requieren de las acciones coordinadas para evitar una caída en la actividad económica.

Los países de todo el mundo que están reunidos en la capital de los Estados Unidos saben que luego de que pase la crisis financiera internacional, el ordenamiento geopolítico que hoy tiene en el centro al G-7 será diferente. Ya sea porque se agregarán más países dentro de ese selecto grupo o porque Norteamérica dejará de ser el centro de poder. Es un reordenamiento que se verá en el largo plazo, pero es lo que manifiestan –por fuera de las declaraciones protocolares– muchos de los funcionarios que asisten por estos días a la reunión anual del FMI. Países como Nigeria, Rusia, Brasil, India y China se encargaron de decirle al titular del Fondo que las cosas tienen que ser diferentes.

"El presidente Lula dijo en varias oportunidades que es momento de cambiar las cosas. Por el momento, el apoyo al plan de salvataje de los Estados Unidos es para ser flexibles y solucionar un tema de corto plazo. Por eso es necesario un cambio en la representación dentro del G-7. Hoy el G-20 no tiene capacidad numérica ni el mandato para llevar adelante la coordinación que piden los países desarrollados. Por eso Brasil está pidiendo que se llame a una reunión para hablar del cambio de representatividad", señaló a este diario un funcionario brasileño con despacho en el Banco Mundial.

En las reuniones preparatorias para lo que fue el encuentro de ayer del G-20 con las principales autoridades del gobierno norteamericano en materia económica, otros países alzaron su voz, algo que no se vio reflejado en las declaraciones formales. Nigeria fue muy duro con Strauss-Kahn durante un encuentro realizado el viernes, en el que también participaron funcionarios argentinos. Básicamente, el país africano solicitó una reestructuración del régimen creado en Bretton Woods, ya que "el FMI demostró no poder controlar una crisis que nunca tendría que haber ocurrido".

China también fue muy dura con las autoridades del Fondo. En concreto señalaron que si bien crecerán este año un poco menos que otros períodos (alrededor del 9 por ciento para 2008 y un 7 por ciento para el año siguiente) tienen la liquidez suficiente para enfrentar esta crisis. Un funcionario de la delegación argentina señaló a PáginaI12 que está en los planes de China reducir su nivel de exportaciones para concentrarse en el desarrollo de su mercado interno. Por ende, interpretaron desde la cartera que conduce Carlos Fernández, eso significará un mayor nivel de importaciones que podrían ser cubiertas con productos primarios de la Argentina.

Mientras se llevaban adelante estas discusiones, el titular del Foro de Estabilidad Financiera, Mario Draghi, elevó sus recomendaciones para sortear los desafíos de la crisis. En una conferencia realizada en un salón del edificio central del FMI, el funcionario adelantó que de ser necesario, se podría llegar a plantear una modificación de las normativas elaboradas en Basilea, que regulan la actividad de los bancos. "Pero por ahora, estamos abocados a que estas regulaciones funcionen en todos sus aspectos", graficó Draghi.

–¿Por qué no funcionó el rescate anunciado por Bush? –preguntó PáginaI12.

–No estoy seguro de que no haya funcionado. Este es un proceso muy complejo que afecta incluso la psicología de los inversionistas. No es algo que se pueda cambiar de un día para el otro –respondió el funcionario.

A veinte cuadras del edificio del FMI se desarrolló un seminario para analizar el mercado de los seguros de riesgos. Participaron directivos del Deutsche Bank, Zurcí Financial Services y el Crédit Suisse. De alguna manera, uno podría inferir que sus comentarios y aseveraciones forman parte de eso que se llama "el pulso del mercado". Jim Schiro, director de la compañía de seguros Zurich, indicó que "la intervención del gobierno no es la única solución y que el sector privado tiene que tomar medidas". ¿Cuáles serán esas medidas? Schiro indicó que "como el riesgo viene de muchos lados, hay que hacer más eficiente el mercado. No porque lo diga Bush sino porque es nuestro rol en la sociedad", se respondió a sí mismo.

Para los bancos y entidades financieras que participaron de ese seminario, la solución a esta crisis financiera llegará con "más mercado". De alguna manera, eso es lo que "sienten" los popes del establishment que contribuyeron a la gran burbuja financiera que hoy está estallando, muy cerca de sus narices.

–Si la solución al problema está en el mercado, ¿por qué no solucionan primero todo lo que está mal en las Bolsas del mundo, por ejemplo cerrando los mercados por un mes? –se animó a preguntar una investigadora de la Universidad de Washington.

–Primero hay que estabilizar los mercados y eso no se hace cerrándolos. Luego, hay que restablecer la confianza, que es lo más difícil de lograr. Pero esto hay que solucionarlo dentro del mercado –respondió Schiro.

Cuando vuelvan a abrir los mercados el próximo lunes, el mundo presenciará cuán efectivas fueron las palabras y declaraciones de apoyo que se dieron mutuamente los representantes del G-7 y el G-20, aunque por lo bajo se criticaron duramente. Lo cierto es que luego de este encuentro en el FMI, Estados Unidos, la Unión Europea, Rusia, los países emergentes y el sudeste asiático moverán sus fichas para quedar mejor parados en el contexto geopolítico internacional. "Y los que jugarán más fuerte, son los que hoy tienen liquidez", señaló a este diario un analista internacional.

Ahora la presión fue del Sur al Norte

"Nuestra situación fiscal es mejor que la de otros países y contamos con variables macroeconómicas sólidas, lo que nos hace estar mejor parados frente a esta crisis internacional. Esto no quita que les pidamos a las principales potencias, como miembros del G-20, que se debe pasar a la acción inmediatamente". Con estas palabras, el ministro de Economía de Argentina Carlos Fernández describió a PáginaI12 el clima que se vivió dentro del encuentro del Grupo de los 20 con las autoridades norteamericanas. Más temprano, durante la reunión del Comité Monetario y Financiero del FMI, Fernández señaló que "esta crisis fue producto de las debilidades de las políticas monetarias y los marcos regulatorios de las potencias económicas".

Antes del encuentro del G-20, la delegación argentina participó de una reunión con el secretario del Tesoro, Henry Paulson, junto a funcionarios de Chile, Perú, México y Colombia, y de Luis Alberto Moreno, presidente del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo. La delegación argentina también participó del Comité Monetario y Financiero del FMI. En ese encuentro, el ministro Fernández planteó la necesidad de implementar acciones coordinadas por parte de los países avanzados para contener la crisis de confianza y solvencia que afecta a sus mercados financieros. "Para Argentina, esta crisis es el producto de las debilidades de las políticas monetarias y los marcos regulatorios de las potencias económicas, que generaron excesivos riesgos sistémicos y burbujas de activos en sus propios mercados", señaló Fernández, con dureza, durante su presentación.

Al mismo tiempo, Argentina destacó la importancia de avanzar en la concertación de políticas entre los países industrializados y las naciones en desarrollo, para permitir que se sostenga la demanda agregada mundial y el crecimiento. "Resulta prioritario evitar una recesión mundial y el círculo vicioso asociado, lo que implica incrementar la demanda doméstica de los países con superávit externo. De esta manera, se podría compensar la fuerte desaceleración esperada en los países avanzados y se promovería un ajuste gradual y ordenado de las paridades cambiarias en el contexto de los desequilibrios externos mundiales", indicó el ministro durante su presentación ante el Comité.

Los países de Latinoamérica están haciendo por estas horas evaluaciones similares sobre el contexto internacional. Por ejemplo, el ministro de Economía de Perú, Luis Valdivieso, señaló que lo importante en este momento es mantener el crecimiento económico local y de la región. "Nosotros tenemos un buen nivel de superávit fiscal (2,7 por ciento del PBI para este año) y un buen nivel de reservas, de 35.000 millones de dólares. Somos los afectados de esta crisis que comenzó en los países centrales y luego rebotó en los países en desarrollo", indicó Valdivieso.

Siguiendo esta línea, Fernández argumentó que "el principio de responsabilidades diferenciadas será vital para reconducir este proceso, una posición bien diferente a la que ocupan las economías en vías de desarrollo, las cuales se verían perjudicadas indirectamente por la desaceleración mundial".

La crisis financiera dejó al descubierto la incapacidad del FMI para garantizar la estabilidad mundial y su falta de supervisión efectiva a los países avanzados. Básicamente, los países del G-20 criticaron la estructura de gobierno del FMI. En este sentido, el ministro de Economía señaló durante su presentación ante el Comité Monetario y Financiero del Fondo que "hacen falta cambios sustantivos en la forma de implementar las funciones de supervisión y financiera de la institución. El FMI debe concentrar su atención en el seguimiento de los países avanzados e identificar sus vulnerabilidades y, al mismo tiempo, ampliar significativamente el acceso al financiamiento bajo un esquema sin las actuales condicionalidades que no se ajustan a la realidad económica y política de nuestros países".

Por su parte, funcionarios chilenos solicitaron rapidez en los mecanismos de provisión de liquidez en los mercados, para asegurar que esos fondos lleguen a las pequeñas y medianas empresas. "Todos los países latinoamericanos compartimos la idea de que hay que abordar esta crisis con rapidez", señalaron desde la delegación chilena.

El mensaje fue claro y unificado. Latinoamérica, si bien no es inmune a la crisis, está mejor parada que los países desarrollados. Y cuando tradicionalmente era el FMI el que exigía condiciones, ahora son los países en desarrollo los que presionan.

I haven't talked at all about my recent vacation. Hubby, Sis and I flew out to Salt Lake City Utah...and flew home from there too. In between, we rented a car, and drove 3700 miles...through Northern Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota. We saw all the touristy places..although we didn't really have time to actually stop and do anything...there wasn't enough time. That was the price we paid for all the places we saw, I guess. My fave had to have been Yellowstone National Park. All in all, the scenery was spectacular. Enjoy the Slideshow. When I look at them, there are two songs going through my mind....America the Beautiful, and Home, Home on the Range.

I also haven't said anything about the scrapbooking contest I entered...and won! Before I left on my vacation, I created and entered a page about my father. The contest called for a submission of your favorite student. Around the same time, I had come across a picture of my dad in grammer school...so that was the photo I used on my page.

Journaling on the page is as follows: Star student, Frank J. Fox, is my dad. This picture was taken sometime in the 1920's at St. Bridget's School, in Watervliet, N.Y. My dad was not only academically inclined...he was a musical genius. He studied classical piano for eleven years, beginning when he was a youngster and continuing through high school. No one could tickle the ivories like dad. I'm sure that my appreciation for classical, ragtime, the blues, and music from the forties is a direct result of listening to dad for all those years. One year, my mom asked what I'd like for Christmas. My request was for an audio cassette of dad playing his repertoire of routine songs. It was the best present I've ever received.

After I got home from my vacation, I went to Scapbooking.com, and I can't explain the feeling inside, when I clicked on the contest details, and saw my page, and my name, saying that I had won the contest. "Greed is good."

20 years later, as the global economy appears to be caving in on an almost daily basis, I have a follow-up for Gordo (you need to watch this film if only to catch a glimpse of the enormous phones that passed as hip mobiles in the mid-1980's: they look like more like Maxwell Smart's shoe phone than a cell phone).

What was that followup again? Oh yeah.

Who said growth is good?

No one ever seems to suggest, in the business pages, that there is something to be said for no-growth. Those economic stats measuring whether or not we have entered a recession leave so much out, don't they? I live in Calgary, which has just gone through three years of rampaging growth. We got a growth report a week there for about 150 weeks in a row that was generally nothing but good news--if you're the type who presumes that growth can only be good.

I'm not so sure of that. Between the nightmarish traffic, skyrocketing housing costs, labor shortage and horrifying food prices at Safeway, I'd say its an entirely debatable issue.

We at slowhopes--OK, me--thought it might be fun to start a conversation where there are other ways to live besides constantly growing your economy.

Maybe slowhopes can become the clearing house for all the slow thinkers and slow talkers and slow cookers and slow walkers out there. There are, after all, whole movements dedicated to slow food, slow growth cities (cittaslow), slow-moving commutes (maybe Steve Martin needs to make a followup to Planes, Trains and Automobiles and call it Bikes, Hikes and Rollerblades).

And not only the slow among us are welcome to slowhopes, but also the underachievers, the mediocrities and the missed opportunities. I read the other day that Steven Spielberg snuck onto the Universal lot as a 17 year old, found a vacant office, set up shop, and stayed there until he managed to convince them to let him have the cottage for real.

When I was 21, I hitch hiked to LA with a bag full of half-finished short stories. I looked up agents in the phone book, then took the city bus from the Hollywood Y to some dirty old office building not far from the Beverly Centre. I found the address, found the office--only to discover they weren't there. The office was empty. It was lunch time, I guess.

Then I gave up, went to the Beverly Centre, had lunch myself and rode the bus back to Hollywood, satsified that I'd given it the old college try. Then I hitch hiked all the way back to Winnipeg.

That'll happen.
