Tchuss!

Thank you for making the midterm visit a great success. Our visiting team expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to observe and obtain answers to their questions. Although they did not have time to visit every classroom, they got a good snapshot to demonstrate progress on our action plans.

While feedback on our progress was positive, the following two areas require special attention:

ongoing development of schoolwide professional development plan

ongoing refinement of assessment strategies to document achievement of ESLRs

There were no new areas identified for improvement.

Both day time and evening ESL teams accomplished a lot at the ESL staff meetings yesterday. The level group writing tutorials provided by the Writing Committee were well received by the teachers. The important thing is to use the materials developed by the Committee creatively. You are free to adapt activities to your particular class and to other picture prompts you want your students to write about. We hope that all instructors will be able to implement the Banking activity in their classes and we would like to receive your feedback by Thursday May 8. You can leave a comment to this posting and/or send an email to your tutor. We will also share our experiences at the staff meetings on May 8. After the last CASAS testing of the year (week of May 19), we will implement a writing assessment based on one of the CASAS picture prompts.

Thank you for adopting books from the Resource Center. Please make sure to pick up your boxes from Room 18. We had a night student book sale fundraiser yesterday night - 2 books for $1 - and raised $61.50! We are going to have a book sale for the daytime students in Room 31 (sewing classroom) on Monday 10:30-10:45 and 12:15- 1:00. I will recruit volunteers from my class to supervise the sale.
Just a reminder - Monday April 28 is the date of our mid-term WASC review. Please welcome Nancy George and Kara Rosenberg to our campus.
Another reminder - please send 2 student reps from your class to the ESL tudents Leadership teams meetings this week. Day time students will meet on Tuesday April 29 in Room 1 12:15-12:45; I will be expecting evening students in Room 21at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 30.
Summer school assignments are coming out next week.

The main focus of both morning and evening ESL staff meetings yesterday was on the Writing Across the Curriculum materials, including rubrics and worksheets. There were some valuable suggestions on the rubrics, as well as on the WASC report. We approved the rubrics as a working document. Teachers decided to implement the rubrics at each level. The recommended materials from Focus on Grammar were well received and teachers will use them in the writing lessons. More materials are on display in the Resource Center. You are welcome to use the ones appropriate to your level. The Writing Committee will continue to develop pre-assessment worksheets and writing assessments for each level.

Nancy George, Visiting Committee Chair, and Kara Rosenberg, Visiting Committee Member, are scheduled to visit our campus on Monday, April 28. This one-day midterm visit is a routine follow-up for our full six-year term of accreditation awarded in 2005. A copy of this report will be posted here soon.

People who try to do everything.

Reading ___'s Xanga annoys me because she's trying to pursue a Biochem/Bioengineering/Pre-med and Int'l Rel/Pre-law double major. Nice girl, she is. But who in their right mind would pursue both of those things. Let's be realistic here. Is she really going to become a lawyer and bioengineer? Seriously, calm the fuck down and stop trying to be an overachiever. Stupid Monta Vista.

On a slightly less bitchy note, we have late start tomorrow because of WASC accreditation. Hooray.

This Friday is the Quinlan Dance. I want to go out of curiosity and boredom. Planning to wear that purple shirt I bought in New York (if I can get it through laundry quickly enough).

And in conclusion, I just can't wait to go to college, damn it.
