[caption id="attachment_137" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Semplice e tipico setting"][/caption]

Learning Guitar can be fun. We recommend looking at Esteban Guitar Lessons for great lessons.

A slide is when you take your finger and drag a whole half or not, in some cases, perhaps, in several cases, identifying the sound of an increasingly high note. Slides are commonly used in blues and rock. Not to be confused with a simple slip of the finger, slide guitar is a different form of a slide guitar metal which is carried by hand and used to play the melody of lead. Slide guitar can produce a very different and it is common in the blues and rock.

A whammy bar is another form of guitar players can make a single sound interesting. A whammy bar, or tremolo bar, the ground drops a note and can be used to create this "dive bomb" sound that is so common in many guitar solos in music today.

I finally got the new Rockband2 guitar. Wireless, yay! It even came with batteries! It is a big improvement over the old strato, the neck seems thicker from front to back, but still seems paper thin compared to my GH3 Les Paul. Yeah the faux wood, and fire burst looks cool. My biggest concern was the strum bar and whammy bar. I've have used four other stratos and three of them had bad whammy bars where the spring breaks off and it no longer springs back. The ones I got back from the RMA they still felt crappy, and some had noisy springs, and the whammy bar it self would slam against the body of the guitar. Others had what sounded like loose bits inside of it when you shook it, and I hated the mushy strum bar.

The new Strato is much better. The whammy feels a bit more solid, and you don't feel the spring squeaking and rubbing as you whack the whammy bar, and it doesn't touch the body of the guitar as you go all the way down with it. What they did with the strum bar was they shorted the "throw" of the strum bar. It still doesn't CLICK like the Guitar Hero guitars do, but it no longer has that mushy feel that you haven't moved it all the way. Now it stops cold when you strum it up or down and it feels like you hit the note proper.

The auto-calibration isn't really that great for me. Audio calibration works fine, and I was amazed I had a 2ms lag time, which is barely noticeable anyway. The video calibration was a problem, while it was able to calibrate, watching the green progress bar grow every time the screen flashed, it continued to say it couldn't get a reliable reading from the guitar when it was done. Seemed fine to me, and the calibration was ZER0ms. The real thing is to test this on my friends system who I KNOW has a lag delay on his surround sound (all surround sound system do!!), but he keeps insisting it doesn't, and I know this since I keep missing notes on really simple songs that have a long rhythmic set of the same notes or chords (not rapid ones) and I'm always off, fucking up the song. This should prove I'm right!

So WHERE the fuck is the juke-box mode on Rock Band 2? If you leave the game on the main title screen where it asks you to press start, all it does is play that intro video (which I'm sick of now), and then it usually it's plays a partal song of AC/DC's "Let there be rock" and repeats. Doesn't change the song unless you restart the game. Where the hell is the juke box mode so I listen to all this music I have (about 250 grand total) with out having to actually play it each time?

When I purchased the vehicle I am currently driving about a year ago, I thought it would be wise to get the extended care plan to go with it. Problem is, I was under the impression that "care plan" and "warranty" were twins. I was wrong. As it turns out, my care plan really has no value and I am still paying for it every month.

Saturday night, as I was contemplating going "Contra Dancing" with some friends, I pulled into a parking lot to have dinner with a friend I had not seen in a while. As I pulled into a space, I realized that the beep I just heard had more to do with trouble than a radio edit.

My vehicle had overheated. Long story short, I have a LOT of small repairs that my protection plan is giving me the privilege of footing the bill for. Normally that would stress me, but when my friends prayed for me Tuesday night, one of the things they spoke over me was for complete casting of my worries on the Lord and His peace in my life. So, no stress.

New perspective: I don't have to pay for the car, God will. I knew that, but the fun part is not only is it a gift, but it is going to be a surprise, so it's like a double whammy! How good is God!

Your hard news story lead answers the five W’s, yes, but without answering the “So what

Your hard news story lead answers the five W's, yes, but without answering the "So what?" aspect, your story will read just like an item from the police blotter. What makes a news item go beyond just reporting the facts to become an actual news story?

You must find and focus on the angle that makes your crime, accident, or fire relevant to your readers. Otherwise, we could just read the police blotter to find out about the latest accidents at our local gas station or the fires that took place in the next town over.

Ask your news item to meet several of the following criteria to determine its newsworthiness:

a) Impact—How many people does the event affect? How seriously does it affect them?

b) Proximity—An event will be more important if is closer to the readers. An earthquake in a far-off land is not as interesting as one that is close to home.

c) Timeliness—Is the event fresh? Is it new? The news must be timely to be of use to readers.

d) Prominence—Names make news, and big names make big news. Ordinary people are intrigued by the doings of the rich and famous.

e) Novelty—This is the new in news, the unusual. The "firsts," "lasts" and "onlys" have been the staples of the news business for many years.

f) Conflict—Conflict has been the currency of great literature, drama and movies for all time. From the stories of Shakespeare to those of Disney, conflict has played a crucial role. Newspapers are no different.

g) Audience—Who is the audience? The answer to that question helps determine whether an event is news at all, and if it is, where it will be played in the paper.

~~~~
And a little more to think about from Cerritos:
Timeliness -- Something that just happened tends to be more newsworthy than something that happened some time ago. In today's fast-paced communications environment you want to give the reader a sense that this is news NOW. In fact, when you write a news story you want to make sure it has a news peg. Think of a peg on the wall that you might hang a hat on. The news peg is the element that you hang your story on. It is the element that makes the story news NOW, as opposed to last week or next week. Timeliness is often the news peg.
Impact -- How many people are impacted by the story. The more the merrier. This might also be called the "Who Cares?" element I talked about earlier. The greater the impact, even if it is an old story, the more likely that it is newsworthy.
Prominence -- Like it or not, prominent people make more news. When spousal abuse leads to one partner injuring or killing the other, it is sad. When one of those partners is O.J. Simpson, you have an international news story. When a married man has an extra-marital sexual relationship with a woman half his age, it is bad for a marriage. But if the man is Bill Clinton, president of the United States, it can affect the world's economy. If the who of a story is someone well known, you might have a story in the most common place of events.
Proximity -- The closer to home a story takes place, the more newsworthy it is. The local politics of a small town in New York probably would not affect or interest our readers, but certainly the local politics of our hometown would. Even if you have a major story break half way around the world look for a local angle. For instance, if a plane crashes and kills 200 people, it certainly is news. But if one of the passengers was local, or used to be local, or has local relatives, you have a new story angle. Even if you don't have that kind of connection to the story, you can ask, "How safe are planes that fly out of the local airport? Could what happened there happen here?" It will bring the story home for the reader, who is more likely to read it and say "Gee Whiz!"
Conflict -- Sad to say, but bad news is often more newsworthy than good news. When war breaks out, it is more newsworthy than when neighbors get along. Even stories about peace are more stories about war, or a lack of it. A car driving down the street is not news until it comes into conflict with a telephone pole or a pedestrian.
The Unusual -- Pulitzer, Dana and others had the right idea about news, too. Something that is out of the ordinary is news. A pumpkin is not news, unless it is as big as a small car. We are obsessed with records, too, that indicate, the biggest, longest, shortest, smallest, tallest, shortest, etc. something. There are thousands of news stories in the Guinness Book of World Records because of our obsession. A major league baseball player hitting a lot of homeruns is interesting, but is international news when a mark McGwire closes in on and surpasses a 37-year-old record for the most homeruns in a season.
Currency -- News can create itself, too. Currency is similar to timeliness. But currency grows from other news elements. Something maintains newsworthiness over time because it first was deemed newsworthy for some other reason. While the fall of the stock market and its impact on world economy may have been newsworthy for several of the reasons listed above, its effects remain newsworthy over time because now they are current events.
~~~~

So What?  SO WHAT!

The main idea of a news story and lead is called the "angle."

It is also referred to in newsrooms as the "hook" because the angle is used to grab, or hook, the reader's attention to make them want to read the rest of the student's story.

Simply, it is the main point a student learned from their reporting and that the rest of their story will try to support.

Finding the angle of a news story forces a newswriter to be critical of a story idea and the reporting. A news writer will discover if there's no angle in an idea or the facts that have been gathered before an editor, teacher or reader will.

Writing the lead and angle involves making some difficult decisions. A news writer must sort through the facts that were gathered from the reporting and decide what the theme is. There may be several different themes, but the writer must decide what the central theme of the story will be in the lead.

Then students must consider what form their story will take.

In sorting through a mass of material, Carman Cumming and Catherine McKercher of Carleton University tell reporters to think about "S-I-N" -- which stands for Significant, Interesting and New. Students should look for either of those three things from their research and interviews and they will be able to find a compelling angle for their lead.

"Whammy"

The late Walter Steigleman, a journalism teacher in Iowa, told his students to look for the WHAMMY. He explained that the whammy is the single fact that makes your story unique.

Consider the following example, based on a radio interview with Vern Walters of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia with CBC's As It Happens in early March 1996:

Vern Walters, a third-generation blacksmith from Lunenburg, has decided to retire and has put his shop up for sale, closing a 120-year-old family-owned business.

That lead has all the required elements. But a "whammy" is provided when it is learned that Mr. Walters is probably Canada's only working maritime blacksmith -- a blacksmith trained to do special blacksmithing to build and repair boats:

Vern Walters, one of Canada's last remaining maritime blacksmiths, has put his shop in Lunenburg up for sale, closing a family- owned business begun 120 years ago by his grandfather.

Quelle classe !

A Swell(ing) Journey Part IX: Vanderbilt? Hello? Are You There?

For whatever reason, the fine kidney doctor people at Vanderbilt have never called me or my local do

For whatever reason, the fine kidney doctor people at Vanderbilt have never called me or my local doctor back with an appointment time. I tried calling again yesterday and left a message. Those of you who have read these tedious posts about my freakish swelling/discoloring/general deterioration know that I was waiting for an appointment with a specialist there while also awaiting skin biopsy results.

The bad news: No appointment with Vanderbilt. Maybe they just don't like me. I've never done anything to them - honest. (Sure, I pull for my Bengals whenever they play the Titans, but that's it.) Maybe it's for the best. They might be really mean there.

(DISCLAIMER): In no way does this photo represent the average doctor at Vanderbilt. Generally, they do not walk around in bloody garments nor do they drill holes in people unnecessarily. However, some staff at Vanderbilt (such as the people working in the gift shops) do tend to wear blood-soaked scarves.

The good news (and it's pretty good!): The skin biopsy confirmed (or at least strongly indicated) that this problem is a reaction to some medication that I take/took and not a weird, undiscovered disease. In addition to that evidence, a kind reader of these blogs sent me some information that indicates a very few kidney transplant recipients have had this sort of reaction when they take Rapamune. (As indicated in a previous post, I stopped taking Rapamune about a month ago.) The information also indicates that it may take 3 to 6 months after stopping the Rapamune, as opposed to a couple of weeks, before it gets better. If I understand it correctly, something bad happens (for lack of a more medical-sounding phrase) to the lymphatic system, but most of the people did eventually get better. So, hopefully I am on the right track and will see some results in the next couple of months. Also, my doctor has given up on Vanderbilt and is sending me instead to a kidney specialist in St. Louis at Barnes Hospital. I now have an actual appointment, and it is in mid-June.

In the meantime, I've grown to love my big fat purple swollen parts. I've named my abdomen "Big Lenny" and my leg and foot "Jake and the Fatman." I'm also keeping busy corrupting my toddler daughter in the following ways:

Teaching her to sing "The Boys Are Back in Town" - she insisted on listening to it three times in a row today on the way to daycare

Teaching her to put her hands in the air and say (with a terrible and probably offensive Italian accent), "It happens!" whenever something bad occurs, such as a drink spill. I look forward to hearing that she has done this at daycare at the appropriate time of spillage

Watching "Whammy!" on the Game Show Network whenever possible. I'm wondering if she's the only two-year-old in the nation who says (in her best game show announcer voice), "It's TOOOODDDDD NEWTON!"

Thanks again to family/friends/readers who have been so supportive. This is especially true of my wife, Allison, who continues to handle the stress of this situation like a trooper. I'll keep you posted. Anyone who doubts that can just take a closer peek at my blog and the ridiculous fact that there are now NINE posts on this subject. Sheesh, when will it ever end?? Madness, I tell you. Finally, anyone who has been wondering what I look like as a purple, swollen version of my old self, here you go, but it's not pretty:

Rosemary Gates is proud to announce that Myth & Judgment was voted the best local CD release of 2007 by fans and readers of local entertainment guide, WhatzUp Magazine.We are extremely proud of this award," said guitarist Michael Archbold. "Not only is it nice to be recognized for the hard work and effort we put into this record, but we are especially proud of it because it represents local ORIGINAL music. In recent years, it seems, original music has taken a backseat to party bands and cover tunes. Those things are fine and we have been part of that scene in the past as well, but as artists, the true joy for our band has been in writing and producing our own music. Bassist Bryan Bankson adds, "You aren't anything unless you are laying down your own grooves! We hold ourselves to the highest standards of writing and producing music. We really dedicate ourselves fully to that pursuit; even more so now than in the past."

In 2004, the band invested in its own record company and recording studio; King James Records & Studio. This investment has enabled the band to be more creative and eclectic in its musical pursuits. Vocalist Christian Schult adds, "With us owning our own studio, expect more frequent releases from the band."

Currently, Rosemary Gates has two projects under way including a new studio album due out late 2008. The band is also working on a video re-release of Myth & Judgment, which will include a video presentation of the album, live performance material, and interviews with the band.

Two bands I became rather obsessed with when I was a teenager were The B-52’s and The Grid.

Two bands I became rather obsessed with when I was a teenager were The B-52's and The Grid. The B-52's one isn't that unusual. They make fun senseless off-kilter pop music and hearing their 'Cosmic Thing' album soon had me tracing backwards and discovering gems amongst their earlier material. Even since then, I've picked up the odd album by them that I didn't own and generally found at least a few worthwhile moments on every record. Anything post-'Cosmic Thing' is fairly hideous though and the new 'Funplex' single makes me want to gag. But 'Whammy', 'Mesopotamia', 'Wild Planet' and the eponymous debut are all well worth checking out.

The Grid is probably a stranger one. Two non-descript blokes in their thirties making noodly electronica (one of whom was Dave Ball of Soft Cell). Why would anyone care? Well, when I was 14, they released 'Floatation', and for some odd reason, I happened to be recording the television onto a cassette recorder as apprximately 30 seconds of said song was played on MTV. Having already been a fan of Acid House, this seemed to make sense to me. And after listening over and over to those thirty seconds, I was soon in awe of this record, which I now had to own.

But times were different then. In a pre-internet age where you actually had to go to shops to buy records and they couldn't always get what you want, I was unable to get my hands on the record despite my incessant nagging of shop assistants. Fortunately, it was my older brother who was able to return from a summer working in London with requested 12" record. Although, I did subsequently track down a remix 12", a 7", the follow-up single which had another version of the track on it and the album which featured another re-worked version.

I'm not sure what exactly sparked my fascination with this song. It's certainly a great song - it was a bit of an Ibiza Chill-out classic, apparently - but I'm also aware that it's not exactly 'Good Vibrations' or 'Tomorrow Never Knows' or whatever. But it still does it for me. Every time I hear it, it gives me inordinate amounts of pleasure. If I hear it used in the background of some holiday programme or whatever, there's part of me that is hugely thrilled by it.

My reason for going on a tangent about these two bands is because I happened to come across a Grid re-mix of The B-52's 'Private Idaho' which is pretty wonderful, actually and can be listened to here. You can also watch someone's homemade video for the song (well, one of the remixes) I've been rambling about, 'Floatation' by The Grid below.

So yeah that sound you hear, the one of an entire city just kind of quietly weeping. Thats New York just taking constant thrusts from the machine that is the city of Boston. It's been a rough year for me being a Yankee fan and all to see the Red Sox win the World Series. Then of course you have the Patriots (who I hate) going undefeated so far by basically grudge banging, spitting on, then throwing on the bed every team they've played so far (except the Eagles.) And then last night the Boston Celtics basically raped the New York Knicks and then beat them with a handy broom handle for good measure. I mean seriously, can you not put up some sort of offense??

I think this just proves exactly how bad the Knicks are this season. As well as shows just how good the Celtics are this season (which they damn well should be since they spent the money to do so.)

I think it's time for Isiah Thomas to just take a sword, perform seppuku and then let Stephon Marbury cut his head off. I mean he has shown nothing but dishonor and shame in his tenure with the Knicks. Do not be surprised to see a lynch mob at the Garden tonight.

I'm just glad I am not a Knick fan. I just really, really hate Boston and that whole area. I mean is it bad that I pray for a van to bust through the green monster, hit Manny Ramirez and then make it's way towards Stephen King. I'm bitter damn it!

But like I said, I'm no Knick fan. I almost was but then I decided against it, for good reason obviously. No I like the Wizards and I've got to say it's not a happy time for me because Agent Zero is out again. Gilbert Arenas is out for 3 months and once again the Wizards are back to mediocre status. When he was playing the few games he did this season, the Wizards kept themselves on a nice little winning streak. It's a damn shame the man had to go and get hurt because now a fine team in my opinion is held back to being little more than mediocre and a fine player is left to writing blogs about how he wishes he was playing and his ex-girlfriend. But like my buddy keeps telling me it's a long season with plenty of time left.

Countdown to opening day: 122 days 08 hrs 44 min
