Nuthin' cooler than rock & roll in a church.

This, apparently, is not a new thing for spazzed-out Dan Deacon and his electro-whatevershock companions. Dan Deacon, is hosting both nights of his "Baltimore Round Robin" tour at Epiphany (aka Epiphany Episcopal @ 201 S Ashland, Chicago). This is one of many DD shows that he's done at a chapel. A quick google-y seach churns out:

• A halloween show at Judson Chuch (New York) with Chromeo and Kudu -- (same place Arcade Fire got their neon on).
• A show at St John's Church (Baltimore) and First Unitarian (Philadelphia) with Girl Talk and White Williams
• And also at First Uni with his "Ultimate Reality" video tour.

Statt die Achtziger elektronisch-poppig neu zu denken, widmet Joe Williams sich ganz seiner Vorliebe für die Siebziger. Vorbilder, Vorlieben und Verweise greift er sich, zitiert sie, editiert, mixt und mischt sie in bester Mash-Up-Tradition zusammen. Jeden Track dominiert ein klarer roter Faden, der jedoch nicht immer so offenbar ist, wie im eindeutig T. Rex bzw. Marc Bolan nacheifernden „In The Club“.

Die Beats sind es dann, die dieses Album – wie auch die Junior Boys – tatsächlich im Hier und Jetzt verorten. Beats und Verzierungen, die, an der elektronischen Mash-Up- und Indietronics-Kultur geschult, nie aufdringlich und nur selten vordergründig daher kommen. Allein im Titelsong tragen sie wirklich den Track, und nur in „The Shadow“ fordern sie die Aufmerksamkeit für sich, spielen sie doch hier eine schmückende Rolle und schieben den Track ins Spannungsfeld aus psychedelischer Frühelektronika und ebensolchem Spätsechziger Jahre Britpop.

„Smoke“ drängt sich als Album nicht auf, schreit seine Qualitäten nicht heraus, sondern baut darauf, der Hörer werde sich ihm schon ausreichend widmen. Dieses Understatement erscheint dennoch hochgradig selbstbewusst. Vor allem jedoch macht das Album so weit verdammt viel Spaß. Es gefällt nicht nur nebenbei konsumiert, sondern steigert sich mit jedem Moment der Beschäftigung. Besonders das rausschmeißende „Route To Palm“ bildet nicht nur den wahrscheinlich stärksten Albumabschluss, den das Jahr 2008 bisher gesehen hat, nein, es reiht sich zudem mutig in die Reihe zum Casting des Songs des Jahres ein. Perfekt arrangiert, wunderhübsch in jedem Sinne des Wortes und voller Suchtpotential führt es aus dem White-Williams-Debüt hinaus und erinnert uns, ja nicht zu vergesslich zu sein.

Mit einem halben Jahr Verspätung kommt also auch Europa in den Genuss von „Smoke“. Seine Rezeption verhält sich dabei zu der des letzten Hot-Chip-Albums, wie Tiefschlaf zu einer ekstatischen Aufstiegsparty, doch spielen beide bei aller Unterschiedlichkeit definitiv in einer Klasse.

"White Williams is playing a free show at Urban Outfitters (11 JF Kennedy St.) in Boston on Wednesday, May 21st at 8 PM to benefit WERS as part of the Toyota/Urban Outfitters Free Yr Radio campaign. Although each show is free, concert-goers must present an invite upon entry which can be printed at www.FreeYrRadio.com prior to each concert."

I'm not so surprised that White Williams would be playing the Urban Outfitters gig - Free Yr Radio tends to snag either Blog Buzzed Bands (which White Williams has been over the past few months) or cult favorites, a la Dinosaur Jr. last year. Still, even faux-vintage clothing haters have to admit it's a pretty sweet deal to catch a free outdoor well, nearly outdoor show (it's at least not your usual dark, steamy concert venue), especially once Boston decides to throw us a bone with non-crappy weather after months of cold and slush. And who better to drag us all out of our grumpy winter stupor than White Williams, aka Joe Williams, the Cleveland-based dance pop purveyor, whose "New Violence" single (which has a backbeat that sounds vaguely like "I Wanna Be Sedated") has been firmly lodged in my brain since, oh, November or so? The Stranger recently described him as "a Cure & The Bunnymen kind of dance-rock," and I like that, but don't slot him with the Killers, the Bravery etc. Williams eschews all that drama - he just wants to dance!

I have yet to recover. It is quite a shock living your first 13 years of life trailing ruby red glitter everywhere you go. Elementary school was tough, okay?

This morning, I remembered it was friday. What did I say? FUCK YES. I may have shouted it in my car and jumped up and down with glee in the middle of morning traffic. I may have done that. But I probably just kept my foot on the pedal and threw banana peels at other drivers. HEY. It worked in Mario Kart. Don't rain on my parade, motherfucker.

White Williams is a multi-instrumental, NY-based electro band fronted by the chic and bright-eyed Joe Williams. FUG IT was first tipped off to Williams by London-based music fans who had noted their delight in his charming and eclectic balance of rock, electro, and a dash of calypso grooves, all chugging away beneath Williams’ cool and detached vocals. We stumbled into his show at Emo’s quite literally, tripping over a step into the room. We did not spill our drink but instead got the camera out, and started snapping and dancing. For someone who has made their name on the electro-pop front, Williams is not a hot, sweaty, erratic frontman (think DFA 1979 or LCD Soundsystem) nor is he a knob twiddler or headbanger (Cut Copy, Hot Chip). He carries himself with an ease and elegance on stage, like a classy dinner theater entertainer, without the camp. His aloof air is the key to the performance, giving his smooth and almost too-perfect tunes a more sexual charge. The cooler he is, the hotter it sounds. Williams knows less is more. Our personal favorite so far: Route to Palm which you can listen to on their myspace. They will be touring heavily this year so keep checking for updates.

Headlights

After hearing them heavily played on WOXY and KEXP, FUG IT was very interested to see Headlights, and lucky for us they played after Evangelicals on our first day out at SXSW. We were certainly not disappointed by their loveable, pretty, charming, feel-good, indie pop. Headlights make you sway instead of jump, sigh instead of scream, and upon hearing Erin Fein’s lilting voice--swoon. Their live performance was energetic and had a lot of chemistry. It’s a shame our angles/height were not good enough to capture it with our cameras, but oh well. In some ways they remind us of a Belle & Sebastian crossed with Stars. You’ll just have to trust us. They’re definitely worth it.

Fanfarlo

Heavily touted as the UK’s answer to Arcade Fire, Fanfarlo did quite well for themselves at this year’s SX. We were already very familiar with their elaborate chamber pop antics in the UK, and it was a welcome surprise to catch one of their SX shows on a sunny day, under a marquee in Austin. If anything Fanfarlo have only improved their live performances, spouting out more energy than even the most diligent Energizer bunny and sending electric currents into the crowd. If you want a SHOW from a band, Fanfarlo can deliver as well as Arcade Fire or even British Sea Power who are also known for their absurdly charming, all-out live antics. And their tunes are just as infectious. Even Chip Adams from US industry hotline The Tripwire has called them his favorite new act of SX 08. Fanfarlo, we’re ready to watch you soar. Hop to it!

• Une soirée à oublier
  White Williams à la Sala Rosa le 15 janvier dernier... Une première partie médiocre suivie d'une prestation très décevante de White Williams, dont je m'attendais à beaucoup plus sur scène. J'osais m'attendre à plus de présence. À plus de plaisir de jouer. Mais surtout, à plus de talent. Et après seulement six pièces, c'était fini. Moche.
• Le concert de Radiohead sur le web
  Parce que c'est Radiohead. Vous commencez à le savoir, je ne peux passer sous silence une nouvelle concernant le groupe. Le concert que la formation a donné au 93 Feet East de Londres est entièrement disponible sur YouTube.Radiohead : "15 Step" (Live at 93 Feet East)
  
• La fausse théorie de In Rainbows
  Cette fameuse théorie qui laisse présager que le dernier album de Radiohead a été conçu autour du chiffre 10. Foutaise. Les gens ne savent plus quoi inventer et comment perdre leur temps (ce que je fais très bien ici). Voir que In Rainbows a été conçu pour s'imbriquer dans OK Computer. Néanmoins, c'est un excellent moyen pour attirer des gens sur son blogue... En faites-vous partie?
• Apple copie Braun
  Fallait bien un grapheux pour me faire parvenir ce billet qui trace un intéressant parallèle entre les appareils Braun des années 60 et les produits fabriqués par Apple aujourd'hui. À voir ici.
• Persepolis
  Comme je le mentionnais précédemment, le film d'animation Persepolis vaut vraiment le détour. Mais comme toute adaptation, plusieurs éléments ont dû être sabrés ou modifiés au profit de la concision.
• Hot Chip et Modeselektor à Montréal
  Le concert de Hot Chip et le party anniversaire de I Love Neon qui regroupe MSTRKRFT et Boys Noize et Modeselektor, tous deux au Métropolis, ont de quoi se lancer sur les murs. Celui de Justice dans la grosse boîte de conserve situé sur le mont Royal est à oublier sérieusement... (Modeselektor sera plutôt du Mutek le 30 mai prochain)
