Bonny Jean Jacobs, 78, the mother-in-law of Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic vice presidential nominee, died this afternoon after a long illness, according to a spokesman for the Biden campaign.

When the drums switch from the rumbly toms to the tight “Fleetwood Mac-style” beat and we sing “Oh no, you’re deep in a mine,” I can’t help but jog in place and pump my fists — a response preferable to scrutinizing how my voice goes a little flat on the third bar of the verse. And isn’t it great that a song about crippling self-repression and the envy of childhood expressions of fear and sorrow can be so joyous?"

I've been a hip hop fan for quite a while.  Wu Tang, Biggie, Busta,  Grandmaster Flash have always been close by (I grew up on the East Coast, go figure).  Growing up, I dug much of the underground stuff that came out and was (is) really into the independent movement behind it all.  I (like many of you out there) don't like being force fed music.  I really enjoy the search.  There is nothing better.  So, when I started hearing DJ and producers remixing classic hip hop, I just about lost it.   Biggie and Wu Tang vs. b-more club = good times.  A few new names but more Tameil, Peterson, and who else but Top Billin'(I don't think I've put up a post without at least mentioning them yet).  Alright, less talkie talkie more music.

Top Billin' has been consistently catching my ear for quite a while.  They blend b-more, electro, rap, as well as numerous other genres amazingly well.  There is something about Top Billin' songs that just do it for me.  Most importantly, they don't take themselves too seriously (check out their remixes of smell yo dick and eddie murphy's party all the time).  Definitely check out their website, as there are tons of free mixes, links and goodness. What I would wouldn't do to get them to come to Minnesota....

alright, that concludes another post of the stay spun.  It still amazes me that I can get into music globally.  I've posted stuff from England (hostage), Finland, Baltimore, New York, Australia, etc. What the effect of this and whether it is a good thing makes for a great debate.  Its easy to forget all the hard work, skill, time, and nerve that goes into the process of making music.  A huge part of what draws me to music (and art) is the subjectivity (internal drive/curiosity) and the human experience.  If you like the songs posted here,  please support the artists.  Lastly, here is a remix I haven't been able to escape this week.

As I said in an earlier post I'm reading The Wu Tang manual at the moment, here's one of my favorite portions where The Rza talks about the spirituality of music:

"Music is naturally all around us, whether someones blasting it through speakers, singing it, playing it on a violin - or not. It's always there in the ether. But to me, hip-hop was always different. From the first time I heard it, I felt it was something that had always been inside of me. I remember I was seven years old. And the sounds, the vibe I caught- it felt like it was in me already.

It was the summer of '76 and we were in Staten Island. My grandmother lived in 240 and I was visiting her when GZA came over from 55. I remember that year, '76 as being the best year of my life. That night GZA took me to a block party - had me out till eleven. I shouldn't have been out that late and I got a whupping. But that night changed my life. It was DJ Jones.

I don't know what else to say. That was it. I saw something that night. I felt some part of me expressed in the air, in the people and in the world around me. The way it hit me- it was like the opening of something inside me. Something came from outside and opened up something inside.

I started MCing at eight and half years old, I started DJing at eleven. I started producing at sixteen. That's already eight years of graffitti, breakdancing, producing. I lived hip-hop. I rode the trains up and down this city all by myself at seven and eight years old. From Brownsville, Brooklyn, we'd ride to Forty-Second street, another slum and just go wilding. Along that path, we'd come across breakdancers, rappers, graffitti artists, fighters, drug users, abusers, squealers, wheelers, dealers, gamblers, dice games, dope fiends, all that.

I went in the South Bronx Soundview Projects with my cousin GZA, listening to people rap. I went all over Staten Island, hanging with the best DJ's and rappers at block parties and getting my ass whipped by my mother when I came in. I hung with breakdancers, I wrote graffitti, breakdanced, popped, DJed. All facets of hip-hop that existed, I engulfed myself in. I really lived it..

i need to cop one of these asap! this is so fresh i still want the other ghostface shirts oh and some new ghostface music wouldn't hurt either.

According to Hip-hop DX Nate Dogg is in stable condition and he's just in recovery after his stroke. They can't say whether it has effected him physically yet but it had no mental damage on him.

wild story after the show i met up with the road manger and then went to the hotel the GZA was staying at and talked for a bit then got to meet the gza the next day and go inside his tour bus , i was bugging i was meeting my hero! There is a lot more to this story but yeah... thats the main point and oh yeah im going to be on a gza dvd , word to your mother and i just kicked it with the rza like a month before on his tour bus for a while i'm making connections with the greatest group of all time!
