As posted on Gamespot.com

Following a spate of leaks last week, Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 3's trophy system will arrive on July 2 as part of the 2.4 firmware update. As had been rumored, the system will eschew its Xbox Live's cumulative numerical score, instead adopting a four-tiered approach which bestows four kinds of awards: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum.

The trophies will be assigned by each game's developer, not Sony--will be associated with a task of relative difficulty; bronze medals will be doled for easy feats, and gold for harder objectives. "The platinum medals will only given when all other tasks are completed," Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation Network operations, told GameSpot.

Each trophy will have a numeric value associated with it--a value which will contribute to an overall levelling system, much like those in role-playing games. However, the user will be unable to see how much each trophy is worth, only a completion percentage for each game and each overall level. When asked why Sony was avoiding tying a visible score to the PS3's trophy system, Lempel said, "We don't know why our users would be interested in a numeric value... we think the medals best represent one's progress."

While trophies will become standard in all games in the future, they will only be added to a few existing games, including PixelJunk Eden, Super Stardust, and Warhawk. Other than BioShock, Sony said it could not confirm trophies for any existing or future third-party PS3 titles, including the wildly popular Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. However, it did announce a spate of upcoming first-party games which would include trophies, including LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, NBA 09, Resistance 2, and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation.

Unfortunately, PS3 trophies will not be retroactive. For games that have already been released, players must first download a patch for said game, and will then have to perform the feats to receive the trophies as though they were playing the game for the first time.

Players' PS3 trophies will be viewable via a new profile window will be accessible via the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which, as rumored, will be available in-game. The XMB will offer access to both at-a-glance trophy tallies, a more detailed breakdown of medals, and a side-by-side comparison of a player's trophies and those of any friend.

The new in-game XMB will offer a host of other new features too, including the ability to text message friends in-game and jump to other PS3 services. However, many of said services--including Web browsing and voice chat--will force players to quit their game and then access the XMB traditionally. The rumored customizable in-game background music feature, which will allow players to stream music from their hard drives while playing a game, was also confirmed. However, the feature will be game-specific, meaning it is up to developers to enable the functionality or not.

Are you excited? I know I am! It'll give me a little hope for the PS3 and I may actually try playing it now instead of getting Achievements on my 360.

As eagerly awaited by the whole of the Playstation fanbase, firmware update 2.4 has finally been confirmed by Sony . You can check out the video walkthroughs brought to us by Eric Lempell over at the Playstation Blog. The update will indeed support in-game XMB (Cross Media Bar), in-game music, and even trophy support for those achievement junkies out there. (Note: The tools have been released to the developers to patch trophy support in to old games, not all games may be compatible immediately following the firmware update. The same applies for in-game music.)

Anyone getting bored with their Playstation 3’s plethora of capabilities yet? Not to worry. So

Anyone getting bored with their Playstation 3's plethora of capabilities yet? Not to worry. Sony CEO Howard Stringer came to the rescue today with the announcement of an on-demand video service similar to the current Playstation Store. And the best part, it's slated for release in summer 2008, which if I'm not mistaken, is like, now. But if it's anything like the Playstation Home, (which I doubt) who knows when it will be released.

According to Arstechnica.com, no other video titles besides the movies and television Sony currently produces has been announced, but the selection should be plentiful. Great. The thing already is so convenient that you don't even have to go leave the couch to turn it on or even to buy some games, and now it'll have a whole library of movies just an X button away. No plans for an integrated soda fountain or popcorn machine have yet been announced, but I say why not? And throw in a blood sugar monitor while you're at it so we can watch our slow descent into diabetes in crystal clear high definition.

But seriously, being the movie freak I am, I'm really looking forward to this. It only makes sense that they would make an on-demand movie service, and although unlikely, I wouldn't be surprised to see them create a music store as well. It would be harder to compete in that market with iTunes and Amazon pretty well cornering it, but it wouldn't take much to develop if they're already providing video.

I'm not surprised that Sony has been able to do so much with the console. It really is one of the best gadgets I've ever purchased and one can only imagine what they might do next, with either the PS3, or, even further ahead, the next-gen Sony console. Any thoughts? I'm interested to know. Drop me a comment or an email.

On another PS3 related note, I found this cool OS X Leopard theme for the XMB today on deviantART and thought I would share it with my fellow Mac/PS3 fans out there. Check it out.

According to customer support, firmware version 2.41, which should be clear of all errors, will be out “midweek”, although Sony is yet to make an official announcement to confirm that.

In case you missed it, Sony last week was forced to pull the hotly anticipated update after widespread reports of it breaking PS3 consoles.

The firmware is available to download from various website on the internet, but to be on the safe side you’d be best to wait for the update from Sony.

Well we did have to open our big mouths didn't we?

After a number of PS3 owners reported problems with the 2.40 firmware download locking up their PS3s, Sony moved yesterday afternoon & removed the update from their servers for further testing.

Here at Sweet Flag, we managed to get the firmware download & report to have no problems with it at all. The XMB ran smoothly while playing through the review copy of Battlefield: Bad Company all last night, so as Sony mentions; it looks to be a problem for a limited few.

Sony also state that they have had no reported problems from customers that have had their PS3 perform a successful firmware update.

How has the update effected your PS3?

I don’t have the time (or reflexes - zing!) to post every time Sony release a firmware update.

I don't have the time (or reflexes - zing!) to post every time Sony release a firmware update. The latest update for the PlayStation 3, version 2.40, is actually a fairly big deal for Sony and the entire industry.

They might as well have called this update "the Xbox Live patch." It finally adds game-specific Trophies (mechanically the same as Live's Achievements) so borderline OCD cases competitive gamers can scour their retail games and PSN downloads to truly complete every game, and compare Trophy collections. The real innovation, however, is the ability to access the Sony Cross-Media Bar in-game.

In-game XMB means PS3 players can finally message their friends across the entire network, regardless of what game they're playing. So, a player who wants some live competition in MLB 08: The Show could pause the game and drop a line to challenge anyone on his friends list. One of his friends playing Metal Gear Solid 4 could see the message, pop in MLB, and get a game of baseball going. It seems arbitrary, but simple functionality like this made Xbox Live the gold standard in online console gaming.

The PlayStation 3 has supported PSN friends list since launch day, but they've never really mattered until now. Under the old method, you were more likely to find a randomly matched opponent on a particular game than you were to sign on and find one of your friends waiting for you.

In-game XMB also allows you to listen to your own music library while playing, but it's tough for me to get too excited about it. After all, haven't we been doing this since the first time someone turned up the stereo while playing Tecmo Bowl in a dorm room in 1989?

The fact that the PlayStation Network is now a cohesive online community that operates across the entire PS3 games library significantly levels the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 playing field. The question is, can Sony capitalize on it and bring hardware sales up to a more respectable level?

It would seem that Sony has two significant advantages over Microsoft. First, PSN is completely free to use, while Xbox Live Gold accounts cost $50/year. This could be a crucial point for Sony, provided they market it well (easier said than done) AND don't screw it up with tiered service and pricing. Qore, their online magazine with "subscriber benefits" like access to private beta tests, is off to a rocky start. And who knows what Sony has planned with the introduction of their Home virtual world...

Second, Sony can leverage the PSP to expand the PlayStation Network and finally deliver the portability to PSN that Microsoft has been endlessly planning for Xbox Live. It's a big opportunity, as Microsoft has shown zero interest in producing a handheld of their own, and even allowing the Viva Pinata characters to appear in Nintendo DS games. Also, the PSP looks to be on an upswing, with outstanding hardware sales in the fickle Japanese market, some critically successful games on the market and in the pipeline, and a winning hardware/software bundling strategy.

The all-but-confirmed Xbox 360 price drop can't be far off, and Sony's unlikely to follow suit. They already are selling the cheapest Blu-Ray player out there, and have made no secret of just how much they need to recoup as much as possible from the PS3 development costs. It should be interesting to see how they proceed, once the momentum of Metal Gear Solid 4 wears off.

One of the major weapons of PS3 bashers since it’s inception has been the almost total lack of

One of the major weapons of PS3 bashers since it's inception has been the almost total lack of social compatibility online. Compared to the 360 (Or so I've been told since I don't play one) the PS3's online experience has been very lackluster, not even allowing you to invite someone into a game while playing. But, the greatest thing about the Playstation 3 is it's almost creepy ability to adapt to the ever-changing needs of its users, and this need is no exception.

On Monday, Sony officially announced the newest firmware update, 2.40 which is due for release today and will answer the cries of online gaming junkies everywhere. You know that nifty Xross Media Bar (XMB), the user interface of the PS3 and the PSP's home screen? Well, the new firmware update will allow you to access the XMB and all of its features in-game. That's right, you can scroll over to the Network option and shoot an invite to a friend, and on some titles, you'll even be allowed to access your music collection in place of the game default music.

According to Sony, the in-game XMB access will not only be limited to multi-player. It sounds as though it will entirely replace the black, limited option screen you're brought to by pressing the PS button. This will allow you to configure your system settings, monitor your downloads, sign in to the Playstation Network all while in the game. I assume that you will also be able to quit the game and shut off the controller and system as well.

The update will also include a trophy system for select online titles with bronze, silver and gold trophies to be awarded upon completion of several titles. According to the official press release announcement:

"Super Stardust™ HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage the Trophies system and will offer a variety of trophies*. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:

BUZZ!™ Quiz TV

LittleBigPlanet™

MotorStorm™ Pacific Rift

NBA 09 - PS3

PAIN*

PixelJunk™ Eden

Resistance 2™

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation

Warhawk™*

*Requires a game update to be downloaded and installed."

No mention yet of a release date for the on-demand video, but I'm sure that it's not far off. Even die-hard XBOX fans have to admit that Playstation 3 has come along way since it's sub-par debut. Sony has been smart enough to realize that their worst critics and most trusted advisers are the people who buy and use their product, and have engineered a system which is constantly reshaping to fit those needs.

In this writer's opinion, the only reason why Sony should even think about a PS4 (and probably already are) is because most of their market is capitalist, and sooner or later they will have to release something new to compete. With proper firmware updates, this system has potential to stay relevant for years to come. Eventually processor speed, hard-drive storage and RAM will catch up to them, but the sheer capability of this machine is staggering in comparison to anything of it's kind on the market, and that is not just my bias talking. I think anyone with a passion for gaming, or even a much more vague passion for home entertainment in general, really must agree.

On the Playstation.Blog there’s a post that had this quote in it that said:

“because I know what you’re going to ask about, and because we don’t traffic in rumors and/or speculation, I invite you to come back to the Blog tonight (just shy of midnight Pacific). We’ve got a video to show you.”

So could it be a Video Of the Long a waited In-Game XMB and all is glory? Well have to wait and see.

[update] yesterday Jeff Rubenstein Commented on the Playstation.blog: “For the record, I’m the one who produces the videos like we did with Grace and the PSN Store redesign. That “very well known source” of rumors out is either ill-informed or just flat-out guesses.
Don’t trust anyone who hides behind a screen name.

Planning 2 videos, 5 or so mins each. One for XMB features and one for Trophies. None of the previous videos has been a short as 90 seconds, just as long as it takes to show off the features and not make you sit through a lot of fluff.”

So I guess that answers the question, In-Game and Trophies Videos tonight

It's taken sometime to arrive but PS3 owners will have something very soon that they can claim is comparable to the XBOX360 Achievements. Trophies will be a major part of the PS3 Firmware update this Wednesday(2nd July) watch part 2(bottom of page) for a full breakdown on how that works.

Also included in the Firmware update will be the in-game XMB, which Eric Lempel states is supported by most games titles out now. Watch part 1 for the full details.

part 1 of the Firmware 2.40 walkthrough - in-game XMB

The forthcoming title, LittleBigPlanet is just one of the reported future titles that will support Trophies. As explained in part 2 of the walkthrough video, game developers can patch current games to make use of the Trophy system.

The titles that are due a game update to support Trophies are: Super Stardust HD, PAIN and Warhawk.

part 2 of the Firmware 2.40 walkthrough - Trophies

Sony seem to be making these changes now before the serious issue of HOME for PS3 begins to take shape, with general beta testing taking place later this year. Let's hope the 2.40 Firmware makes a smooth transition on Wednesday.

The wait is almost over friends. Wednesday comes the highly anticipated firmware update 2.40 for the PS3. Included in this update is of course the ability to access your XMB while in game, simply press the PSbutton to bring it up. Also included is the Trophy system, similar to the Xbox 360's achievements. Here is a list of supported games as of now.

Super Stardust HD

BUZZ! Quiz TV

LittleBigPlanet

MotorStorm Pacific Rift

NBA 09 - PS3

PAIN

PixelJunk Eden

Resistance 2

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation

Warhawk

The trophy system WILL NOT apply to old save games, you will have to replay them if you want the trophy's. There is good reasoning for this, all one would have to do is download a save game and get all the trophy's with out any work. Expect a full right up and review of the biggest firmware update for the PS3 yet, when it becomes available.

Sony will be finally adding XMB access in-game. This means you can message people on your friends list to join a game you're in, or play music off your hard drive, or do a google search. All while in-game. These changes will make the PS3 a much more socially friendly experience. It also looks like Sony will be hopping on the achievement train and will adding in "trophies" along with this firmware update as well. Trophies work much like achievements do on the popular Xbox 360 Live system. They let the player try different ways of playing the game or simply provide bragging rights for higher gamerscores.

Sony's trophy system works similar. You are awarded bronze, silver, or gold trophies depending on the difficulty of the task. Each player will be ranked based on how many of each type he/she has unlocked. The social aspect is stressed here, as you can compare your Trophies with friends, and you will be given a level based on the number of Trophies in your collection. You'll be able to track how many points you need before you unlock the next level, as well as your overall ranking as compared to other players online.

Super Stardust HD will be the first game to include trophies but many upcoming games will have them at release, including, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, and Motorstorm Pacific Rift. Existing games can have the feature patched in as well. Expect the trophies to be featured in Home as well as objects that you can display in your virtual dwelling. US Playstation Blog has a good walkthrough of the feature as well.

The new firmware will be released July 2 for the Sony Playstation 3.
